Problem

https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22777 made chat messages read Hebrew and Arabic right to left. Several surfaces around them still render as plain left-to-right text:

• Agent questions (Claude's AskUserQuestion, Codex questions, any user input request), on web, desktop and mobile. Hebrew labels and descriptions sit on the left, the period lands at the start of the sentence, and mixed lines such as גרסה 2.5 של Node.js (בערך 40%) come out scrambled.
• Citations: the comment box, the composer chip, and the quote and comment in the citation popover.
• Message attachments: in a Hebrew message, the attached images and files sit on the left while the text reads from the right.
• Diff comments: the comment box and the saved comment on a diff line, also used in the PR code tab, the PR guide and file preview.

To reproduce, ask an agent to ask you a question with options in Hebrew, cite a Hebrew sentence and add a Hebrew comment, or send a Hebrew message with a few images.

Change

Everything uses the existing word-majority rule from https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22777 (textDirection). No new heuristic.

• Question card, web and desktop (ComposerPendingUserInputPanel):
  • Each text line (header, collapsed preview, option label, description) gets dir={textDirection(text)}, so it reads in its own direction.
  • The card picks one direction for the whole question set, from every question's header, question, labels and descriptions. That dir goes on the card, so the radios, shortcut numbers, header and counter sit on the matching side, and every line aligns to that side.
  • Because it is decided once per set, the card never flips while you step through the questions. A mostly English set stays left to right on a Hebrew question, and a mostly Hebrew set stays right to left on an English one.
• Question card, mobile (PendingUserInputCard): the same rule.
  • The header, option labels, and descriptions get direction and writingDirection styles for their own reading direction, so punctuation lands at the correct end.
  • React Native treats textAlign: left/right as start/end on a line whose direction is rtl, so the card picks the value that lands on the set's side physically.
  • The question sentence goes through the Enriched Markdown renderer. SelectableMarkdownText now passes the fork's writingDirection prop and a paragraph textAlign through, so the question follows the same side.
• Citations (AssistantCitationChip, AssistantCitationCommentEditor): the comment textarea, the composer chip label, and the quote and comment in the popover get dir={textDirection(text)}.
• Diff comments (DiffCommentAnnotation): the comment box and the saved comment get dir={textDirection(text)}, like the citation comment. Text direction only.
• Message attachments (TimelineUserMessageRow): the bubble's content takes its direction from the message text, so images, videos, audio and file rows start from the right in a Hebrew or Arabic message. The text already set its own direction, so it is unchanged.
• Markdown with code (markdownProseDirection): the places that read a whole message or question (the message bubble, the question set's direction, the collapsed preview, and on mobile the set and the question sentence) strip fenced code, inline code and URLs with one regex before counting. Without it, a Hebrew message or question with a code block or a few identifiers came out ltr. Short plain-text lines stay on textDirection.
• Code blocks (MarkdownCodeBlock): already dir="ltr", and now also text-start, so a code block inside a right-aligned question card stays left-aligned.
• To let mobile use the same rule, textDirection now lives in @t3tools/shared/textDirection. apps/web/src/textDirection.ts re-exports it, so existing web imports and tests are untouched.

Known limits, same as before this PR: indented code blocks without fences, and paths or @file references without backticks, still count as English words.

Not touched: on mobile, the custom answer field is the native composer, which https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23587 covers. https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23587 also touches the Enriched Markdown direction props, so whichever lands second needs a small rebase.

Scope and approval

This is a follow-up to merged https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22777 for https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/13622. It applies the same rule to the surfaces that change didn't reach. https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/15320 included the question card before it was closed in the PR cleanup.

Verification

• Unit tests for markdownProseDirection in apps/web/src/textDirection.test.ts: Hebrew around fenced, double-backtick, tilde and unclosed code, inline code and URLs. 6 of them fail without the stripping.
• Browser test ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.direction.browser.test.tsx: a mostly Hebrew set computes to rtl on the card and its lines, an English option inside it stays ltr, and a mostly English set keeps the card ltr on its Hebrew question. The first test fails without the whole-set direction.
• vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, React compiler, and tests pass.
• Screenshots are from the running apps: the web client from vp run dev at 2x, and the iOS development build on an iPhone 17 simulator (iOS 27) paired to the same dev server, at 3x. Claude Sonnet 5.5 asked the questions with AskUserQuestion.
• Not checked: Android rendering. The direction style follows React Native's Android text layout code, but I didn't run it on an emulator.

thanks @Dananz. your fix correctly reuses the existing direction heuristic and keeps the option rows and controls in place. i kept all your commits and merged current main into the original branch at 96be4481882ab29b11f5dbb6b5cdaf3db185dc3e. the conflict resolution preserves main's redesigned header, separator, radios, spacing and shortcut column while retaining direction on headers, labels, descriptions and collapsed previews. no new heuristic or production scope was added.

verification:

• reproduced the browser regression on main: the hebrew header computed to ltr instead of rtl.
• blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip passes, typecheck of 34 affected packages and 12 tests. focused direction, navigation and heuristic tests also passed separately.
• system chrome against the running dev app: a real codex question with english-leading hebrew and arabic options renders rtl; collapse/reopen and selecting/submitting the hebrew option work through the provider path. screenshots use matching question data and main's component before versus this head after.
• unverified this run: native ios/android rendering, electron shell and remote/tunnel connections.

@Dananz: one nonblocking upstream android gap remains. react native 0.88 ignores writingDirection; direction aligns these text nodes but android's first-strong paragraph ordering can still misread english-leading rtl prose. this needs an android-supported native paragraph direction mechanism in a follow-up. i kept this takeover focused rather than patching the native renderer or inserting hidden bidi characters into displayed answers. ios retains your original implementation and evidence.

• 12a9d52 Web question card: one direction for the whole question set, by the same word-majority rule. Line by line, the card flipped sides while you stepped through a mixed set. Now a mostly Hebrew set stays right to left even on an English question, and a mostly English set stays left to right on a Hebrew one. Each line still reads in its own direction.
• 88ccf5e Mobile: the same rule, the question sentence included. It passes the Enriched Markdown fork's writingDirection and a paragraph textAlign through SelectableMarkdownText. This overlaps fix(mobile): respect prose direction in chat and composer #23587 a little, so whichever lands second needs a small rebase.

vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests). Codex reviewed the diff and caught the collapsed preview not following the set's side, fixed in the same commit. On your Android note: I still haven't run it on an emulator. React Native swaps textAlign left and right on rtl lines on iOS, and I'd rather check Android in a follow-up than guess. verified as-is at 88ccf5e73ea39ff773613f572be031b4092aa201. no code changes or pushes.

• reproduced on github/main (c3f5e363e5) in a separate worktree, with vp i and the real dev server. the same hebrew header, labels, descriptions and citation comment computed to ltr, scrambling mixed punctuation.
• installed and ran the exact pr head separately. drove the actual web client with repository playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome; created a project pointing at a real git checkout and used real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. no mocks, fixtures or demo data.
• both native codex questions in plan mode and t3 async input requests render correctly. a hebrew-majority set stays on the right on its english question; an english-majority set stays on the left on hebrew and arabic questions. each line retains its own reading direction, including english-leading rtl prose and numbers/parentheses.
• collapse/reopen, option selection, automatic advancement and answer submission work. codex repeated the selected labels unchanged. citation comment save/reopen, composer chip, sent quote/comment details and go-to-source navigation work; codex received the quote and comment unchanged.
• blacksmith: 21 tests passed across the existing direction, heuristic, question navigation, citation chip, comment dismissal and citation navigation test files. the six reported pr checks are successful; git.cafe still reports the github conflict observation as pending.

Short plain-text lines stay on textDirection.
• d54b84a Code blocks: MarkdownCodeBlock already sets dir="ltr", but a right-aligned question card's text-right still reached it, so code aligned right and wrapped badly. It now also sets text-start.

I re-checked every case in the running apps (web at 2x, iOS simulator at 3x): the question cards, citations and messages look as they did before, apart from the fixes below. Android is still unchecked.

Known limits, same as before this PR: indented code blocks without fences, and paths or @file references without backticks, still count as English words.
