fix(web): Queued messages can be edited during Compact and send - #27310
When a stale Claude thread shows the Compact chip, sending runs Compact and send: T3 starts a /compact turn and queues the message behind it. If you edit that queued message while the compaction runs, the edit can't be saved. The button spins as "Updating queued message", Enter does nothing, and once the compaction ends the original text is sent.
The composer holds a send as in flight until the server has acknowledged it, and blocks further sends and queued-edit saves until then. During Compact and send, the thread shell hides T3's own idle compaction run, so the runtime the composer checks reports the queued message's run with status queued. The acknowledgement check read that as still connecting, so the send stayed in flight for the whole compaction even though the server already had the message.
A queued runtime whose latest user message has changed now counts as acknowledged, which lets the queued edit save while the compaction runs. The holds for preparing and starting runs, such as a first send or worktree setup, stay as they are. Mobile has no Compact and send, so it needs no change.
#27149 (the Update button skips the busy state while editing) approaches the same issue from the button. With it applied, the button looks enabled, but clicking it or pressing Enter still does nothing, because onSend returns early on the same pending send, and the original text is sent. This PR fixes the acknowledgement itself, so the button and the save both work without that change.
Scope and approval
#26609 reports the failure and the expected behavior. This is also a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug: one condition in the composer's acknowledgement check, web only, with a regression test.
Verification
A new case in ChatView.logic.test.ts, "acknowledges a message queued behind an idle compaction", fails on main (expected false to be true) and passes with this change.
Manual check in a private dev server with a Claude Haiku thread. Compact and send normally appears only on a Claude thread over 200K tokens that has sat idle past the prompt-cache TTL, so for these recordings a local, uncommitted override made shouldOfferResumeCompaction offer it on a smaller thread. The compaction, the queueing and the edit are real. Each recording queues a message asking for one word, then edits it during the compaction to ask for another.
Before: Enter does not save the edit, and the agent answers APPLE, the original word.
After: Enter saves the edit, the queued row updates, and the agent answers DATE, the edited word.
In the same setup, main with #27149 applied showed an enabled Update button, but neither a click nor Enter saved the edit, and the original text was sent.

When a stale Claude thread compacts before a send, the message queues
behind T3's idle /compact run. The thread shell hides that silent run,
so its runtime reports the queued run, and derivePhase reads queued as
connecting. hasServerAcknowledgedLocalDispatch held the send as
unacknowledged for the whole compaction: the composer stayed busy, and
saving an edit to the queued message with Enter did nothing.
A queued runtime whose latest user message has changed now counts as
acknowledged.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Queued messages can now be edited while Compact and send is running, once the server has acknowledged the message. The change narrowly adjusts composer busy-state tracking while retaining the preparing and starting safeguards.

Walkthrough
The connecting-phase acknowledgment check now returns true when the runtime is queued and the latest user-message ID differs from the local dispatch snapshot. Tests cover this condition and cases that do not acknowledge the dispatch.
The function now acknowledges a local dispatch during connecting when the runtime is queued and the latest user-message ID has changed. Tests cover this condition and verify that other connecting states do not acknowledge it.
A save attempted during a narrow send-in-flight window may be ignored, leaving the original message queued. This is a bounded risk to address or accept before merging.

Keep queued-edit saves behind the in-flight guard.
useComposerSend.ts returns when sendInFlightRef.current is true, before it reaches queuedRunEdit.saveEdit. The normal send sets that ref before calling startThreadTurn and clears it only after the command completes. The thread projection subscription runs independently from the command, so a queued projection can arrive while the command is pending. In that interval, the acknowledgement change can clear isSendBusy, but a queued-edit save still returns without feedback. Keep Save disabled until the in-flight guard clears, or allow queued-edit saves through that guard.

kept mwolson's production fix and original commit. merged main, then expanded the existing regression into four cases: changed queued messages acknowledge; unchanged queued messages, preparing, and starting still wait. no production code was added beyond the original fix. final diff against main: two files, +38/-3.
verification: reproduced the original regression failing on current main (d92c437baa), then passed blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main: format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, 46 tests, and react compiler. all 33 ci checks pass at d08b7a820e. two independent code reviewers found no issues. github reports clean and mergeable.
local chrome comparison restores the same database snapshot before each run. main leaves ORIGINAL queued after Enter and sends ORIGINAL; the fix saves EDITED during compaction and sends EDITED. these captures use Replay (dev), with three uncommitted capture overrides: force the compact-before-send trigger on replay threads, enable replay-only compaction support, and slow replay frames. the real adapter, orchestration, queue, composer, and edit rpc run normally. replay's canned response does not prove a model followed the edited request. timestamps, sidebar recency, and git summaries differ between captures. a host-load toast appears briefly before the main recording's interaction.
unverified here: real claude (not logged in), electron, mobile, remote/relay, and other providers. the original pr's real-claude evidence remains available. mobile has no compact-and-send path; desktop shares this web code.
known low finding: the review bot identifies the brief interval where the projection acknowledges before the send rpc returns. sendInFlightRef still blocks a save in that interval. this is separate from the compaction-long lock fixed here; preserving that guard prevents overlapping sends. left as a follow-up rather than widening this fix. mwolson, this limitation does not block this takeover.
linux boat vm, repo Playwright 1.60.0 and /usr/bin/google-chrome. installed dependencies with vp i. ran github/main at 6d46336476941257d774be7c7733e9caf201fec2 in /home/user/main first, stopped its dev process, then ran the exact pr head d08b7a820e3540b572f59a0426d8cbdd757ebe97. only one dev server ran at a time. no mocks, replay, seeded fixtures, database writes, or source overrides.
created the project and threads through the web app against a real git checkout. used real codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local proxy. on both main and the pr, queued reply with exactly ORIGINAL during a running shell command with ctrl+enter, clicked edit, replaced it with reply with exactly EDITED, and saved with enter. the queued row changed and the real provider later answered EDITED. adding and removing a second queued message also worked on both. on the pr, a subsequent ordinary send returned NORMAL.

these captures prove neighboring codex behavior, not the compaction fix. the thread histories and initial wait commands differ. the short recording shows the pr queue/edit interaction. inspected the full-size screenshots and the uploaded recording, including playback and seeking.
Not verified
the changed compact-and-send behavior remains unverified. i could not reproduce its original failure on main through the requested codex path. shouldOfferResumeCompaction explicitly requires claudeAgent, at least 200k tokens, and an expired idle prompt cache; codex cannot offer this trigger. claude auth status reports loggedIn: false, so a real claude reproduction is unavailable on this vm. ordinary codex queue edits pass on main too and do not substitute for this proof. i did not add a trigger override or change the pr.
native ios/android, the electron shell, macos/windows, and remote/relay connections were not exercised. the preparing/starting acknowledgement guards are covered by the passing existing logic tests, not a live worktree-setup scenario. no full check:changed run was needed because no code changed.
result: partial live verification only; do not treat this as proof that the compaction-specific bug is fixed.

/compactturn and queues the message behind it. If you edit that queued message while the compaction runs, the edit can't be saved. The button spins as "Updating queued message", Enter does nothing, and once the compaction ends the original text is sent.Fixes #26609
Change
The composer holds a send as in flight until the server has acknowledged it, and blocks further sends and queued-edit saves until then. During Compact and send, the thread shell hides T3's own idle compaction run, so the runtime the composer checks reports the queued message's run with status
