Important

Bottom of a two-PR stack: merge this first, then #21558, which reuses these cache keys for full-size previews. Both target main because the fork can't push a branch to pingdotgg.

Problem

The server signs every asset URL with a fresh expiresAt, and expo-image caches by URL. So on mobile, chat markdown images, media-file images and GitHub PR images download again each time their URL is re-signed: on every cold launch, after scrolling away and back, and after a tap. While they download, they show "Loading image…" again.

Change

Each image source now gives expo-image a stable cacheKey that doesn't change when the URL is re-signed:

  • Attachments: attachment ID plus the fileRevision the server returns when it signs the URL. An agent can edit a delivered attachment file, so an edited one gets a new key. This includes images stored as generic files, which the server now versions using the same image rule mobile uses to show them as images. If a server sends no fileRevision, mobile keys attachments by ID alone, as main does.
  • GitHub media: the environment, the server's GitHub credential scope and the canonical GitHub media URL. This covers user uploads and repository files pinned to a full 40-hex commit SHA. Blob and raw links to the same pinned file share one key. Files on a branch or tag can change, so they stay keyed by URL.
  • Workspace and media files: the path plus the fileRevision. An edited file gets a new key, so it is not served stale.

Tool-output images keep URL keys. A tool can replace the image at the same index, and the server has no cheap identity for its bytes.

Two GitHub accounts can see different bytes behind one URL: account A can read a private pinned image that account B gets a 404 for. So when it signs a GitHub media URL, the server also returns a new optional accessScope on AssetCreateUrlResult. It is a short SHA-256 hash of the credential's existing fingerprint, or of a fixed value when there is no credential, so it changes when the environment's GitHub credential changes and reveals nothing about the token. If a server sends no accessScope, mobile keys its GitHub media by URL, as main does.

Mobile can sign the GitHub media URL with that accessScope (see binding below). When serving, the server computes the scope from the same credential lookup it fetches with. If a sign-in or account switch since signing changed it, the URL returns 404, so one credential's bytes can't land under another credential's key. URLs signed without the scope, by web or by an older server, still serve: only clients that received an accessScope key their cache by it.

#23106 added fileRevision to AssetCreateUrlResult, but only for absolute media files. The server now also returns it for workspace files. It reads the revision from the file handle it already opens to read image dimensions, and builds it the same way as for media files. A bound image URL also carries that fileRevision. When serving, the server opens the file through the same openMediaFile path, recomputes the revision from the opened handle, and streams from that handle. If the file changed since signing, through an edit, an atomic save or a swapped symlink, the URL returns 404. expo-image never caches an error, so stale bytes can't land under the old key, and the next mint returns the new revision. Media files were already bound to their inode; images among them are now bound to the full revision. Video and audio keep the inode-only binding, so in-place edits stay playable. Image attachments work the same way: the server opens the stored file through openMediaFile when signing and when serving, and refuses a bound URL whose revision no longer matches.

Binding is opt-in per request. AssetCreateUrlInput has a new optional bindVersion flag, and only then does the server sign fileRevision and accessScope into the URL. Mobile sets it in useAssetUrlState, useRefreshAssetUrl and (in #21558) usePreviewAssetUrl, because it keys its cache by those values and re-signs after an error. Web and older clients never re-sign after an image error, so they don't set it and get main's serving behavior: a URL keeps serving the current bytes after an edit. The server returns fileRevision and accessScope either way, and the client query cache keys by the whole input, so a bound and an unbound result are never shared.

A refused URL only recovers with a new one, so every mobile component that shows these signed images now re-signs once after a load error: markdown and media-file images, message attachments, queue and composer attachment thumbnails, and GitHub PR images. If the new URL fails too, the component shows its error state. The retry guard is a ref, so two errors reported before React commits still re-sign once. The next retry waits for a successful load, so an image that can't decode doesn't re-sign forever. This also covers an edit that lands mid-download.

Asset error responses (400, 404 and 500, for both GET and HEAD) now send Cache-Control: private, no-store. A 404 is cacheable by default, and a URL refused because its file changed must not stay refused after the file is back. GitHub media errors, including upstream 404s, send it too. Only successful media responses keep a max-age for the URL's lifetime.

As a side effect, web's file preview, which already appends fileRevision to video and audio URLs, stops reloading unchanged workspace media after every command. Servers that don't send fileRevision leave host files on URL keys, which is today's behavior. Favicons and native app icons keep URL keys.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix with no prior issue. Mobile already avoided re-downloads for attachments by keying them on their ID. This PR applies the same idea to the other signed image sources. It adds no new UI or settings. On web, URLs serve exactly as on main. The only change is the extra fileRevision in results for workspace files and image attachments, plus imageDimensions for images stored as generic attachments.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/lib/assetImageSource.test.ts apps/server/src/assets/AssetAccess.test.ts: 36 passed. New cases cover:
    • tool-output images staying keyed by URL;
    • GitHub upload and pinned-SHA keys, scoped to the environment and credential, with blob and raw links to one pinned file sharing a key, and no key without an accessScope;
    • the server returning an accessScope that is stable for one credential and differs for another credential or none;
    • a GitHub media URL refused with no-store once the credential differs from the one it was signed under, and an upstream GitHub 404 never cached;
    • branch, tag, short-SHA and 64-hex refs staying keyed by URL;
    • host-file keys, which hold for one fileRevision and change after an edit;
    • the server returning a workspace-file fileRevision that is stable across mints and changes after a same-size edit within one millisecond;
    • bound workspace image URLs refused after their symlink is swapped, and bound media and attachment image URLs refused after an in-place edit, while unbound URLs for the same files serve the current bytes, as on main;
    • an image attachment stored as a generic file versioned and refused the same way, with a re-signed URL serving the new bytes under a new fileRevision;
    • an unbound GitHub media URL still serving after the credential changes;
    • attachment keys, which hold for one fileRevision, change after an edit, and fall back to the ID alone without one.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/http.test.ts apps/server/src/ws.test.ts: 29 passed.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit passes for mobile, server, client-runtime, shared, contracts and source-control-github. Targeted vp lint reports no new warnings on the changed files, and vp fmt --check is clean. The changed components compile with no new pruned memo scopes.
  • iOS 27.0 simulator on iPhone 18 Pro, with a 300 ms delay on every asset request. Medians of 3 interleaved passes, main at d31269e46b against this PR at d522c3af31:

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change spans mobile image caching and retry behavior, shared RPC contracts, signed filesystem assets, GitHub credential scoping, and asset error caching. Because it changes default mobile behavior and security-sensitive server-side asset handling, the runtime impact warrants human review.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 16f2d

This change stops images from re-downloading when their URLs are re-signed. Two narrow edge cases remain open: a same-size file edit made within the same millisecond could show a stale preview, and cached GitHub media could in rare cases be reused across account changes. Neither blocks merging, but the owners should be aware of both.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 964bd

The change preserves environment separation and does not grant additional server privileges. However, previously downloaded private GitHub images may remain reusable after access changes. That authorization-lifetime behavior needs validation.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Immutable GitHub image keys are scoped by environment and URL, but not by authorization generation. GitHub credential selection can change, and issuing a new asset URL validates the URL without checking upstream access. Consequently, a previously cached private image may remain displayable after access changes without repeating the credential-checked serving request. Compared with the former URL-keyed behavior, re-signing no longer necessarily forces that request. Coupled native-cache invalidation has not been established; the concern does not demonstrate cross-environment access or acquisition of previously uncached private images.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified authorization-lifetime concern is limited to images already retained on a device under the same environment and immutable GitHub URL. Every stable key includes environmentId. The inspected path does not establish access to another environment's cache, new GitHub privileges, or downloads of private images that were never cached.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The conditional path is: a private immutable image is cached, the selected GitHub credential or its access changes, URL issuance still succeeds, and the stable key permits reuse without an upstream request. This is an inferred lifecycle concern, not a demonstrated unauthorized-account disclosure; native cache retention and transition invalidation remain coverage gaps.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — GitHub media URL issuance normalizes and validates the requested URL. On a network fetch, the existing serving path obtains the server-selected github.com credential, restricts bearer-token forwarding to designated GitHub hosts, and propagates upstream failures. Credential selection is host/account based rather than workspace-cwd based, so omitting cwd from the cache key does not merge distinct per-workspace credentials in the inspected implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected mobile consumers provide an asset URI only from successful asset state; the cache key alone does not render an image after URL issuance fails. However, GitHub URL issuance success is weaker than current upstream authorization because the access check occurs during serving.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If changing GitHub credentials or revoking access is intended to stop image visibility, define that cache-lifecycle guarantee explicitly. An opaque server-issued authorization generation combined with appropriate native-cache invalidation could preserve stable image reuse without exposing credential material.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is thorough and follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains that signed URLs change on every re-sign, so expo-image re-downloads images. The Change section lists the per-source cache keys and the new fileRevision, accessScope, and bindVersion fields. The Scope section argues the change is a small fix of an obvious bug and cites the prior attachment-ID keying as precedent. It does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval, so that part is weaker. The Verification section gives specific test commands, pass counts, lint and type-check results, and a before/after table with screenshots. Two points need attention. The description says 36 tests passed, but the objectives say 32. The Scope section also argues the change is small, yet the diff covers server, contracts, shared, and client-runtime packages. The description also does not say which model produced the work, though the template asks for that when an agent was used. It does name the model at the bottom, so this is covered.

Resolution

  1. Add a link to a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, or explain why this fix qualifies without one. The current Scope section argues it is small, but the change spans server, contracts, shared, client-runtime, and mobile code. Explain why these cross-component changes belong in one fix. 2. Reconcile the test count. The description reports 36 passed for the two test files, while the PR objectives report 32. Confirm the correct count and update the description or the test run. 3. Optionally, tighten the Change section. It is long and covers several related but separate behaviors, including the bindVersion opt-in, no-store headers, and retry logic. Consider a shorter summary with links to the detailed behavior. The description is otherwise complete and well supported.

Asset URLs carry a fresh signature on every mint, so expo-image missed its
cache and markdown thumbnails fell back to "Loading image…" after a tap,
a scroll-away, or the periodic refresh. Thumbnails now pass a stable
cacheKey: attachments and tool output by identity, GitHub uploads by URL,
and host files by path plus the fileRevision the server reports, which
now covers workspace files too.

Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code
GitHub repository files were keyed by their signed URL because a branch or
tag ref can move. A full 40- or 64-character commit SHA cannot, so those
files now cache under their canonical raw URL, shared by blob and raw links.
