Model: built with Claude Code; the exact Claude model was not recorded.

Rebased 2026-10-11 onto main 98beed1a22; head 9c340d0dac. This rebase had no conflicts and leaves the patch unchanged; it re-runs CI now that main's own Typecheck is green again. The earlier rebase onto ee7924f is described next. Main removed GitHubCli, so the GitHub clone-URL lookup now lives in GitHubSourceControlProvider in packages/source-control-github. That lookup used the checkout's host, so a pull request on a second GitHub host could fetch a same-named repository from github.com. getRepositoryCloneUrls now takes an optional host, and GitManager passes the host from the pull request URL without checking which provider it is. On this rebase, main's new bare-name lookup (resolving a bare repository name to the signed-in account) also uses that host, so it asks the pull request's GitHub host rather than github.com. The new tests fail on main and pass on this head. GPT-6.1 Sol (high) reviewed this rebase: SHIP. At this head these pass: focused tests (172 tests), typecheck (server, source-control-core, source-control-github), lint and fmt on the changed files, and knip. The web build, build:desktop and release smoke were not re-run for this rebase; the real-process traces below predate it.

Problem

You can authenticate gh with github.com and with a second GitHub host, such as GitHub Enterprise. Checking out a pull request from the second host can then fetch a same-named repository from github.com. The new worktree or branch can contain the wrong commit, and its upstream points at the wrong remote. This affects same-repository and fork PRs. No error is shown.

Why this qualifies

Fixes #14939. The issue is labeled bug. Its triage comment, posted from a maintainer account, confirms the bug on main. It asks for a focused fix: pass the pull request URL's host through the two existing clone-lookup call sites, and add a regression test with a same-named repository on the default host. This PR does exactly that. GitLab, other host detection, custom ports and reused-worktree refresh stay out of scope, as the triage says.

Fix

  • GitManager reads the host from the pull request URL it has just resolved. It passes that host to getRepositoryCloneUrls when materializing the PR branch and again when setting its upstream.
  • GitHubCli.getRepositoryCloneUrls reads repos/OWNER/REPO from that host through main's GitHub REST client, in place of the checkout remote's host. Without a host, the lookup is unchanged.
  • The existing verified-credential host guard is unchanged. A host-qualified argument already satisfies it.
  • If the PR URL cannot be parsed, the lookup omits the host and behaves as it does today; it does not throw a defect.

Evidence

Environment: macOS 26.5.2 (arm64), Node 24.12.0, gh 2.94.0, Git 2.50.1. Server services ran directly; no client UI was launched. Verified on upstream main 8fb068c498.

No UI code changed, and the wrong result is Git state (remote, HEAD and files). A screenshot would not show it. The evidence is a real-process reproduction instead:

  1. Create two disposable bare Git remotes. Both have branch feature/host but with different commits. Repository-local URL rewrites map the enterprise URL to one remote and the github.com URL to the other.
  2. Run the real GitManager, GitHub provider, GitHubCli, installed gh and real git. Point gh at a local GraphQL fixture through its Unix-socket transport, with GH_HOST=github.com. No account or live forge is contacted.
  3. Prepare a worktree from https://github.enterprise.test/owner/base/pull/42, once as a same-repository PR and once as a fork PR. Then inspect the upstream URL, HEAD, and a file that exists only at the PR head.

Observed on main (both cases fail):

same-repository PR
  gh pr view https://github.enterprise.test/owner/base/pull/42
  gh repo view owner/base (API host: github.com)
  upstreamUrl=https://github.com/owner/base
  headMatchesPullRequest=false; host.txt=missing
fork PR
  gh repo view fork/repo (API host: github.com)
  upstreamUrl=https://github.com/fork/repo
  headMatchesPullRequest=false; host.txt=missing

Observed with this PR (both cases pass):

same-repository PR
  gh repo view github.enterprise.test/owner/base (API host: github.enterprise.test)
  upstreamUrl=https://github.enterprise.test/owner/base
  headMatchesPullRequest=true; host.txt=enterprise head
fork PR
  gh repo view github.enterprise.test/fork/repo (API host: github.enterprise.test)
  upstreamUrl=https://github.enterprise.test/fork/repo
  headMatchesPullRequest=true; host.txt=enterprise head

Focused checks at this head, all with CI=true:

  • vp test run src/git/GitManager.test.ts -t "same-named repositories|hostless URLs" (in apps/server):
    • With main's GitManager.ts, GitHubCli.ts and SourceControlProvider.ts, the 4 same-named-repository cases fail; the upstream is https://github.com/....
    • With this PR, all 8 pass.
    • The 4 hostless-URL cases (an unparseable URL, and a file:/// URL whose host is empty) pass on main, because main never parses the URL. They guard the new parsing: switching it to new URL(url).host fails the unparseable cases with TypeError: Invalid URL, and passing an empty host through fails the file:/// cases (gh repo view /fork/repo).
  • vp test run src/git/GitManager.test.ts src/sourceControl/GitHubCli.test.ts src/sourceControl/GitHubSourceControlProvider.test.ts src/sourceControl/SourceControlProviderRegistry.test.ts: 4 files, 173 tests passed.
  • vp run --filter t3 typecheck: exit 0.
  • vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives and vp fmt --check on the four changed files: exit 0.

Surfaces

  • Web and desktop: fixed. Both check out PRs through the PR dialog or PR detail panel, which call the same server checkout. No client code or wire contract changed.
  • Mobile: not affected. The mobile app has no PR checkout entry point.
  • Local, remote/relay and tunnel: same behavior in all three. The server runs gh and git on its own machine, and the connection type is not involved.
  • Agent providers (Codex, Claude, Cursor, Grok, OpenCode, Antigravity): not affected. This is source-control code, not agent code.
  • GitHub: fixed. Clone lookup is host-qualified.
  • Forgejo/Gitea: this provider already accepts an optional server host and now receives the PR's host. With an HTTPS origin on that host, nothing changes. With an SSH origin, the existing login matching is limited to logins on the PR's server. Not separately exercised.
  • GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps: not affected. Their clone lookups ignore the new optional field.

Not checked

  • No live GitHub Enterprise instance, real multi-host authentication or network Git transport was used. gh talked to a local API fixture, and Git fetched from local bare repositories.
  • No web, desktop, mobile, relay or tunnel client was launched.
  • Forgejo/Gitea checkout with the forwarded host was not exercised.
  • PR hosts with custom ports are out of scope, as the triage says.
  • CI's Node runtime was not used. Local Node 24.12.0 is below the declared ^24.13.1 range.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 0b81aaa

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused, test-covered bug fix that makes pull-request checkout lookups use the pull request’s GitHub host while preserving existing fallback behavior. Production changes are limited to two existing checkout paths and an additive optional provider field, with no default, deployment, security, billing, or static-analysis changes.

Pull request clone URL lookup now accepts an optional host. GitManager passes the host parsed from the PR URL during upstream configuration and PR head preparation. Tests cover Enterprise and default-host behavior in local and worktree modes.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 89878

The previously identified hostless-URL fallback problem is fixed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 89878

Host-aware lookup corrects repository selection without bypassing the existing credential checks. Cross-host failure recovery and reused-worktree refresh still have pre-existing identity limitations, so the change should not be understood as guaranteeing the correct pull-request head throughout preparation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed outcome concerns repository code, remotes, upstream configuration, and worktrees belonging to the selected checkout. Wrong-head selection can also affect code available to an existing setup-script execution path. No expanded administrative authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A pre-existing identity-loss path remains: failed materialization can fetch the same PR number from the primary checkout remote, and reused-worktree refresh independently prefers that remote's numeric pull ref. A conflicting ref can therefore supply the wrong head. The full comparison does not establish that this PR introduced or materially expanded that attackable scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — GitHub credential lookup normalizes the requested host. When a verified credential is pinned, a different host is rejected before the bearer token is attached or HTTP executes. Without a pin, the existing credential service resolves the requested host; pinning is not demonstrated as universal for preparation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Reused-worktree refresh protects dirty trees and local commits, records the previous commit before a non-fast-forward move, and uses a merge-safe reset. These pre-existing safeguards contain local data loss but do not validate that the fetched target belongs to the intended PR host and repository.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry host-qualified repository identity through pull-ref fallback and reused-worktree refresh, and reject identity mismatches before reporting success or running setup scripts. Exercise conflicting same-number refs and partial failures to validate the complete preparation lifecycle.

Replying to the two pre-merge warnings in the CodeRabbit summary:

  • GitLab host selection: intentionally out of scope. The triage on #14939 limits this fix to the GitHub clone-URL lookup and calls GitLab's checkout-host lookup a separate problem. GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps ignore the new optional host field, so their behaviour is unchanged. Adding GitLab here would put a second problem in this PR.
  • Docstring coverage (80%): this is a generic CodeRabbit default, not a requirement in this repository's contributing guide, AGENTS.md, or .coderabbit.yaml. The one new test helper already has a comment saying how it is used. We have not added boilerplate docstrings.
