Problem

On mobile, when you control a browser tab that shows a JavaScript prompt() and start typing a reply, the reply is replaced with the prompt's default as soon as another viewer opens, closes, or reconnects to that tab. The server broadcasts a control update to every viewer whenever viewers change, and it includes the same, unchanged dialog. PreviewStreamWebView reset the reply to dialog.defaultValue on every control message, so Accept submitted the default instead of what you typed.

Change

Remember the previous dialog and keep the draft while the incoming dialog has the same type, message, and default value. A new or changed dialog, or a closed one, still resets the reply. The dialog history is cleared when this viewer goes back to connecting, so a dialog that closed and reopened while it was disconnected starts fresh. The comparison is a small pure helper, previewPromptText.

Scope and approval

Small, focused fix for an obvious bug (a typed reply is silently overwritten), so it uses the no-prior-issue exception. Mobile only.

Verification

iOS Simulator, T3 Code Dev client on iOS 27.0, against an isolated backend on disposable state. A server-browser tab shows a test page whose button calls prompt("What should we call this run?", "default name"). The iPhone (iPhone 17 Pro) controls the tab and types typed by phone. Then a second viewer, an iPad Pro 13" on the same tab, joins, and the iPhone taps Accept. The steps are identical on main and this PR.

Before (main) After (this PR)
Prompt field after the iPad joins
Page after Accept

Recordings of the iPhone (the iPad join happens off-camera): before (the reply resets to default name and the default is accepted), after (the typed reply survives and is accepted).

  • previewPromptText.test.ts covers a typed reply surviving viewer-change control updates, an intentionally empty reply, changed and closed dialogs, and the reconnect reset. With main's unconditional reset, 2 of its cases fail (log). With the fix all 8 pass (log), rerun after rebasing on current main.
  • vp lint on the touched files and typecheck in apps/mobile: clean.
  • Independent review by Claude Opus 5.5 (high), two rounds through T3 delegated tasks. Round 1 found stale dialog history after this viewer reconnects, which is fixed and tested. Round 2 found no blocking defects.
  • Known limit, unchanged here: the existing stream bridge only reports connecting after the first frame has streamed. That is unchanged here.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 2b90965

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, isolated mobile bug fix that preserves typed browser prompt replies across unchanged control broadcasts while resetting safely for new, changed, or reconnected dialogs. The added pure helper and focused tests keep the runtime impact narrow.

Note

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

The focused tests cover the extracted state logic, but the PR says the mobile interaction hasn't been run. Please add a short before/after recording showing a typed prompt reply while a second viewer joins, then accepting that reply. The verification guide requires visual evidence for this interaction.

📝 Walkthrough
📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The preview stream now preserves prompt text across repeated dialog broadcasts. It resets the draft when the dialog type, message, or default value changes, and clears dialog history when the stream enters connecting.

apps/mobile/src/features/browser/previewPromptText.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/browser/PreviewStreamWebView.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/browser/previewPromptText.test.ts
previewPromptText preserves the current draft when dialog details remain unchanged. The preview stream tracks the previous dialog and clears it on reconnect. Tests cover repeated broadcasts, changed dialogs, and reconnects.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2b909

Prompt replies are now preserved across control updates, which fixes the reported mobile issue. In a narrow case, a socket that closes before its first frame can leave a stale reply in a reopened identical prompt. Address this small fix before or soon after merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2b909

A replacement prompt could inherit text from an earlier, dismissed prompt instead of starting fresh. Submission still requires an explicit Accept action, and existing permission checks remain intact. The potentially unsafe event ordering has not been reproduced.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Matching dialog metadata can conflate distinct prompt instances. If a replacement opens while the server awaits dismissal or acceptance, the server can broadcast that replacement without first broadcasting closure. The new mobile logic then retains the previous draft, including a dismissed response, and a later Accept submits it to the replacement prompt. This introduces a potential unintended disclosure through an existing lifecycle gap; the necessary browser event interleaving has not been reproduced.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified risk is bounded to a controlling viewer's retained draft and a successive prompt in the same preview tab. It does not establish another viewer's access to the draft or a permission bypass.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A page that opens an identical replacement prompt during asynchronous dismissal could receive previously unsubmitted text if the retained draft survives and the viewer subsequently accepts. Normal null broadcasts defeat this path. Navigation handlers do not independently invalidate dialog history, but cross-document timing and exploitability remain unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Ownership controls authorize who may respond, but neither the draft comparison nor the reply contract binds a response to a particular dialog instance or document. These ownership checks therefore do not resolve the identity collision.

Added iOS Simulator before/after evidence to the description. The iPhone types a reply into a browser prompt(), an iPad joins the same tab as a second viewer, and the iPhone accepts. On main the field resets and default name is submitted. With this PR, typed by phone is kept and submitted. Screenshots and recordings are included.
