fix(server): detect fork PRs for branches without upstreams - #13894
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes a production Git lookup path by adding nontrivial remote inference, ancestry checks, ambiguity handling, and new user-visible PR detection for branches without upstreams. The scope is focused and well-tested, but the runtime behavior and algorithmic complexity warrant human validation. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Problem
A branch pushed to a fork without
--set-upstreamnever showed its pull request in T3 Code, even when the PR was open. On the thread forfix/composer-pasted-pr-reference-loaderthe review existed the whole time — #12310, open againstpingdotgg/t3codefrom the fork — but the branch bar showed no PR at all. From inside the thread there was no sign the work was up for review, no view of its review state, and no PR to link the review to. The only way to confirm it was to leave the app and go looking for the PR by branch name on GitHub.This is the ordinary way to push a fork branch:
git push fork <branch>, no-u.What the thread looked like
The same thread, before and after, read straight from the project's stored state:
branch_pull_request_jsonnull{"projectId":"90bfd106-…","repository":"pingdotgg/t3code","number":12310,"url":"https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/pull/12310"}fix/composer-pasted-pr-reference-loader↗ 12310 · fix/composer-pasted-pr-reference-loaderprojection_thread_pull_requests[][]projection_thread_pull_requestsis empty in both: detection and linking are separate, and linking stays a deliberate action. This PR fixes detection only. Why it happens
GitManagerasks GitHub for PRs on the branch head, then keeps only the PR whose head identity matches the branch's local evidence, so a PR from someone else's fork is never attached to your thread. That head identity is read from the branch's upstream.git push fork <branch>without-ucreatesrefs/remotes/fork/<branch>but nobranch.<name>.remote, so the branch has no upstream and no head remote. T3 Code then has no way to say which repository owns the PR head.GitHub does return the PR. It is discarded anyway: with an empty expected head identity, a cross-repository PR looks exactly like the unsafe case that check exists to prevent, so the correct PR was thrown away and the branch bar stayed empty.
What changed
branch.<name>.remotevalue whenbranch.<name>.mergeis absent. Literal per-remote refs also handle remote names containing slashes. The change is confined to server Git lookup, focused tests, and task-oriented user guidance. It changes no client, contract, or provider adapter.
What the tests cover
The tests build real local repositories and bare remotes while presenting GitHub-style remote URLs to the lookup. They check that a fork PR appears without an upstream, remains visible after a new local commit, and is still selected when stale branch remote config points elsewhere. A separate test covers a remote name containing a slash. The GitLab adapter is covered for SSH and HTTPS fork remotes with and without an upstream. The ambiguity test now has a positive control: it finds the PR with one fork ref, then rejects a guess after a second fork receives the same branch. The tests also verify that a diverged remote ref does not identify the PR head, while an exact ref wins over a second remote whose tip is only an ancestor. The first positive test fails on the original implementation; the ambiguity rejection alone already passed there.
Validation
GitManager.test.tson the preceding revision (117 tests): 117 passed.pnpm --filter t3 typecheck, targeted lint and formatting, andgit diff --checkpassed.UI changes
Before — the branch bar names the branch and nothing else, so the open PR is invisible:
After — the same branch bar, now carrying the open PR:
