Voice input on iPhone recorded from whatever input iOS picked. With AirPods or a car connected, that meant the Bluetooth microphone, which is often much worse than the phone's own microphone.

Settings → Microphone (iOS) is one drag-to-reorder list that mixes kinds and named devices, for example:

  1. Built-in microphone
  2. Julius's Bose QC
  3. Other wired
  4. Other Bluetooth
  5. Julius's AirPods Pro
  6. CarPlay

When a recording starts, voice input walks the list and picks the first entry with a connected input (AVAudioSession.setPreferredInput through expo-audio's setInput). A kind row stands for its connected devices that aren't listed by name, so with the order above a new Bluetooth headset is preferred over the AirPods. If nothing matches, or the chosen input disconnects, iOS keeps its own route. VoiceOver can reorder with Move up / Move down, and Edit forgets a named device. When microphone access hasn't been granted, the screen offers Allow microphone access, or Open Settings once iOS stops asking.

iOS lists only connected inputs, and only while a recording session is set up, so wired and Bluetooth devices are added by name (port UID and name) the first time dictation sees them. A new device goes just above its kind row, keeping the rank it had while unlisted. Built-in and CarPlay are kinds only, since there is just one of each. The default order is Other wired, Other Bluetooth, Built-in, CarPlay, so CarPlay starts below the phone's microphone. Listing by device also separates AirPods from a car without CarPlay, which iOS reports with the same port type.

Implementation notes:

  • The order is a device preference (microphones). The voice provider reads it from the atom registry when recording starts and saves newly seen devices through a transform, so editing it doesn't re-render the app-wide provider.
  • The input is chosen after the native prepareToRecordAsync, because prepare re-applies the audio category and would reset the route.
  • The Routes drag handle moved into SettingsDragHandle so both lists share it.
  • Android has no voice input yet, so the screen is iOS-only, like Keyboard.

Not fully verified on a device yet. The earlier device-only build listed "iPhone Microphone" and "Julius's AirPods Pro" correctly on an iPhone. I haven't confirmed that a Bluetooth device keeps the same port UID across reconnects; if it doesn't, the device would show up twice.

Voice input recorded from whatever input iOS routed to, which is the car's
or AirPods' Bluetooth microphone whenever one is connected. Settings →
Microphone now lists Wired, Bluetooth, iPhone, and CarPlay in a draggable
order; when recording starts, voice input selects the first connected
input of the highest-ranked kind. The default ranks CarPlay below the
iPhone microphone.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a complete iOS microphone-preference workflow and changes the existing voice-recording path to select inputs using persisted ordering. It also establishes new automatic routing defaults, so the behavior and native audio integration warrant human review.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

Walkthrough

The mobile app adds an iOS Microphone settings screen for managing microphone order. It stores and validates microphone preferences, then uses them to select a connected recording input. The settings route and shared drag handle are integrated into the app.

Explanation

The description explains the problem and implementation in detail, but it does not follow the required template. It omits an explicit Scope and approval section, lacks focused verification results, and does not provide the required screenshots or recording for the settings UI and reorder interaction.

Resolution

Rewrite the description using the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification headings. Add the triaged issue or maintainer approval, document the focused tests and observed results, state the unverified Bluetooth UID behavior, and attach before/after screenshots plus a short recording if needed to show the drag interaction. Kinds could not tell AirPods from a car without CarPlay, since both
connect as Bluetooth headsets. Voice input now remembers each connected
microphone by its iOS port identifier and name the first time it records
near it, and Settings → Microphone lists those devices for the user to
drag into order or forget. A new device joins after the last one of its
kind, so an existing preference carries over; CarPlay still starts below
the built-in microphone.

Without microphone access the list stayed empty with no explanation.
The screen now shows an Allow microphone access row while iOS can still
ask, and Open Settings once it can't, rechecking when the app returns.

30-33: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Handle a rejected getRecordingPermissionsAsync as ask only after you check the failure cause.

When the permission read rejects, refresh sets "ask". The screen then shows "Allow microphone access". If the user already denied access permanently, this shows the wrong action. The user then taps it, and requestRecordingPermissionsAsync resolves with canAskAgain: false, so apply maps the result to "denied". The state self-corrects after one tap, so the impact is low.

Consider keeping the state at "checking" on a read failure, or log the error. This leaves the screen without a misleading prompt.

Ranking only remembered devices left a device voice input had never seen
to iOS, and gave no way to prefer "any other Bluetooth device" over
specific AirPods. The Microphone order now mixes kind rows (built-in,
other wired, other Bluetooth, CarPlay) with wired and Bluetooth devices
listed by name. A kind row ranks its devices not listed by name, a new
device is listed just above its kind, and saved device-only orders keep
their ranking.
