perf(dev): knip:check runs its two passes side by side (34 s → 26 s median on 4 CPUs) - #30737
Every commit that touches code or a manifest runs vp staged, which runs vp run knip:check (vite.config.ts, staged), and CI's "Check unused code" step runs the same command. knip:check is two whole-repo knip passes chained with &&: unused files and dependencies, then unused exports for the clean workspaces. Neither reads anything the other produces or writes to the checkout, so they wait on each other only because of the &&. (scripts/check-changed.ts already runs the same two passes side by side; the hook and CI don't.)
Change
package.json: the two commands move, unchanged, into knip:check:files and knip:check:exports. knip:check stays a script and now runs vp run knip:check:all, so vp run knip:check and npm run knip:check keep working and the hook, CI and docs keep calling the same name.
vite.config.ts: knip:check:all is a task whose dependsOn lists the two scripts, so the task runner starts both at once. It follows test-cache in scripts/lib/cached-tests.ts (command: 'node -e ""', dependsOn, cache: false). A script and a task can't share a name, hence :all.
scripts/check-changed.ts and its test: it found the passes by splitting the old script on &&; it now reads the two named scripts (same commands, same concurrency).
docs/operations/development.md: "then" becomes "at the same time".
No knip flag, workspace list or rule changes, and caching stays off. Keeping the old name costs a second vp start (the script, then the task); that's included in the timings below.
Scope and approval
One problem: two independent checks run in sequence in the pre-commit hook and in CI. This changes how long the check takes, not what it checks, when it runs, or its exit codes. It adds no option and changes no product behaviour, so I'm submitting it as a small, focused performance fix to the developer tooling. If you'd rather discuss the approach first (for example limiting knip to changed workspaces in the hook instead, which would change what a commit catches), I'm happy to move it to an Ideas discussion.
Verification
Command timed: vp run knip:check in a detached worktree of e68e19d605 (main, the old script) and the same commit plus this change, both with dependencies installed, Node 26.12.1, Windows 11. 5 runs each, alternating main and branch, after one unrecorded warm-up pair per CPU count. Each run is inside a job object that limits CPU affinity to the first 4 or 8 logical CPUs of a 32-thread machine, at below-normal priority. Every run exits 0.
vp run knip:check (seconds)
main, median (min, max)
this change, median (min, max)

4 logical CPUs, n=5

8 logical CPUs, n=5
33.9 (32.8, 35.6)
23.0 (22.2, 23.6)
10.9 s, 32%
Main takes about the same time at 4 and 8 CPUs, so each pass is mostly single-threaded and the saving is close to the length of the shorter pass. The pinned CPUs are logical CPUs of a 32-thread desktop, not a real 4-core laptop or runner. CI's lint job runs on 8-vCPU Linux, so the 8-CPU row is the closest, but I have no Linux or CI timing.
Peak memory: the launcher samples every descendant process about every 0.3 s and takes the maximum of the summed working sets. Medians: main 3,341 MB vs 3,335 MB at 4 CPUs, main 3,320 MB vs 3,352 MB at 8 CPUs. No difference beyond noise. Working sets count shared pages more than once, and a peak shorter than the sampling interval can be missed.
Failure behaviour, with an unused file, an unused export, or both planted, NO_COLOR=1 vp run knip:check:
planted
main
this change
unused file
exit 1, Unused files (1)
exit 1, same report
unused export
exit 1, Unused exports (1)
exit 1, same report
both
exit 1, files report only
exit 1, files report only (3 of 3 runs)
Differences you'll see: the two $ knip lines print together before the reports, and a vp run: n/2 successful line follows. When one pass fails, the runner cancels the other. Which report shows when both would fail depends on which pass fails first. Here the files pass always finished first (about 11 s, against about 21 s for exports), matching main, where && never reaches exports. On a heavily loaded machine the exports report could show first; fixing it and rerunning then shows the other. Exit codes are unchanged.
Tests: scripts/check-changed.test.ts passes 15/15 with this change (vp test run --project root scripts/check-changed.test.ts), including the test that launches the knip passes. On Windows that file's git fixtures need one local workaround (they set GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL to os.devNull, which git for Windows rejects), which I reverted afterwards; unmodified, the same 7 tests fail on main and on this branch for that reason. A real commit through the hook passed (fmt, lint, vp run knip:check). npm run knip:check exits 0 on the branch; I couldn't run pnpm run knip:check here because the global pnpm shim failed to download its tool.
Not checked: macOS, Linux, CI.
Claude Sonnet 5.5 in T3 Code (Claude Code harness).
The unused-files and unused-exports passes do not depend on each other, so the pre-commit hook and CI no longer wait for one to finish before starting the other. knip:check:all is a task whose dependsOn lists the two passes; the knip:check script still exists and runs it, so vp run, pnpm run and npm run knip:check keep working. check:changed reads the two pass scripts by name.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change runs the two Knip audits concurrently while retaining both checks and command validation. Its impact is limited to development and CI scheduling, with no product-default changes or added diagnostic suppressions in the reviewed diff.

Walkthrough
Knip file and dependency checks are now separate from export checks. The changed-file script reads both named checks. The Vite task configuration adds a task that depends on both.
Changes: Knip check workflow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and consume named Knip checks package.json, scripts/check-changed.ts, scripts/check-changed.test.ts, docs/operations/development.md
The package scripts define separate file and dependency checks and export checks. The changed-file script and its fixture use both named checks. The documentation describes the checks.
Combine checks in the task configuration vite.config.ts
The task configuration adds knip:check:all, which depends on both checks and disables caching.
The split Knip checks preserve both validations and their aggregate entry point without an established merge-blocking risk.

Explanation
The title names the main change: knip:check runs its two passes side by side, with a performance gain. It is a conventional commit title in plain language and matches the changeset (package.json scripts, vite.config.ts task, check-changed.ts, docs). The timing figures are supporting detail and do not reduce the match.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section states the sequential knip passes and their cost. The Change section lists each file touched. The Scope section explains why the change is a small focused performance fix and offers an alternative discussion path. The Verification section gives timings with run counts and environment, failure-mode comparisons, the test result, and what was not checked. The model and harness are named at the end. The template's HTML comment guidance is not repeated, which is acceptable. Minor gap: the Problem section does not give a reproduction step, but the environment and timing reproduction are covered in Verification.

The changed-file test currently checks only that one Knip invocation exists. Add assertions for knip:check:files and knip:check:exports so the test detects an omitted or misdecoded pass.

Update the changed-file test to assert that both Knip passes are invoked with
their expected arguments: the files pass with “--include files” and the exports
pass with “--exports”. Anchor the assertions to the existing Knip call records
so the test fails if either pass is omitted or its arguments are misdecoded.

@coderabbitai Addressed your nitpick in 9629e90: the launcher test now asserts both knip passes with their arguments (["exec", "knip", "--include", "files"] and ["exec", "knip", "--exports"]), so dropping or misdecoding either pass fails it. scripts/check-changed.test.ts passes 15/15 on Windows, with the local \.\nul workaround described in the PR body (not committed).

@Pyseph Thanks for the update. The two exact argument assertions would address the nitpick.
Verification is inconclusive: my checkout is at f410444d06, still contains the earlier assertion, and cannot resolve 9629e90952. Please retry verification once that commit is available on the PR branch. I have not rerun the tests.

Verified exact head f410444d06f2b673df736a75324a742fb61464ae against github/main at 8b44f42b14. No PR code changes were needed.
Ran the real vp run knip:check on dedicated Linux Blacksmith workers and sampled the actual Knip processes. Main started files at 0.21s and exports at 4.41s, sequentially. The PR had both running at 0.21s. Both commands exited 0. These individual runs prove overlap; they are not a controlled speedup benchmark.
npm run knip:check passed. All 15 existing scripts/check-changed.test.ts tests passed. vp run check:changed against the PR base passed formatting, lint, both Knip passes, typechecks, and 16 tests across two files.
Started main and PR dev servers separately, stopping main first. Used repository Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. Added a real Git repo through the web UI and selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol. Main completed a shell-read turn. The PR resumed that thread, completed a real shell-edit turn, and displayed the exact +1 checkpoint diff in stacked and split views. Conversation and checkpoint diff remained available after reload. No mocks or seeded app data were used.
This PR changes developer tooling. The command process overlap verifies its change; the app flow checks for regressions.
Native desktop/mobile clients, macOS/Windows, remote/tunnel connections, an actual commit hook, injected-error Knip cases, and controlled performance measurements were not exercised. The contributor fork has a later test commit that is not on this PR; that commit was not included. Both dev servers and task-owned Blacksmith workers were stopped after verification.
Thanks for verifying it end to end. The later fork commit, 9629e90952, only changes a test. It makes the launcher test in scripts/check-changed.test.ts assert both knip commands (--include files and --exports) instead of any knip call, as CodeRabbit asked. GitHub didn't sync it into this PR during its push errors this morning. The head you verified, f410444d06, is complete without it. If GitHub picks the commit up later, that assertion is the only difference.
Since your verification this PR's mergeable state had been stuck on unknown, left over from GitHub's push errors, so I pushed a merge of main (d5742f8c9d) to re-sync it. It's now mergeable.
Compared with the head you verified, f410444d06, the only change from this PR is the test-only commit 9629e90952 I mentioned earlier. The rest comes from main. CI is running on the new head.
