fix(server): a publish whose first push fails still shows the new remote - #29688
Publishing a local repository creates the hosted repository and adds it as a remote (for example origin) before the first push. If that push fails, for example because SSH authentication is rejected or the host key isn't trusted, the error correctly says "Created owner/repo and added it as remote "origin", but the push failed… then push again."
The panel never learns about the new remote. The sourceControl.publishRepository handler refreshed the repository identity and Git status only when the whole publish succeeded. So the status keeps hasPrimaryRemote: false: the Git actions menu still offers Publish, which would try to create the same repository again. Project grouping by repository identity also stays stale.
Change
The handler now runs the identity refresh and the status refresh after the publish finishes, whether it succeeded or failed (Effect.ensuring instead of two success-only Effect.taps). Both effects already can't fail: resolve has no error channel, and refreshGitStatus ignores causes and forks. The success path doesn't change.
This matches #29651 (the same success-only refresh in gitRunStackedAction) and #19686 (auto-pull).
Scope and approval
Very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so no prior issue: the server's own error message describes a partly applied state (remote added) that the status refresh then ignores. It is one handler, with no contract or client change.
Overlap search: the local PR index and gh search prs for publish / push failed / refresh status found no PR touching this handler. #19219 (merged) added the push-failure message but not the refresh. #29651 changes only gitRunStackedAction. #24613 is about which protocol publish chooses.
Verification
New ws.test.ts case, "a publish whose push fails still refreshes the new remote". It sends a real sourceControl.publishRepository RPC through layerWsRpc, with publishRepository mocked to fail, then awaits the identity and status refresh signals on a Queue (no sleeps).
Red on main: FAIL src/ws.test.ts > a publish whose push fails still refreshes the new remote — Error: Test timed out in 120000ms. (the refresh never happens).
Green: vp test run src/ws.test.ts, 16 passed (16).
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (3 packages) and tests all pass.
Scope: this fixes the server refresh only. For a brand-new repository with no upstream and no commits ahead, the client's existing action gate still keeps Push disabled on both main and this branch; that gate is separate and unchanged here. (A maintainer verified the refresh with a real GitHub publish whose first SSH push failed.)

Walkthrough
Repository publishing now refreshes repository identity and Git status after completion, including when publishing fails. A WebSocket RPC test checks the failure case.

The publish RPC runs repository identity and Git status refreshes in an ensuring finalizer. The test checks that both refreshes are requested after a mocked publish failure.
pingdotgg/t3code#29929: This issue concerns stale repository identity after adding a remote through shell commands. This change refreshes identity after publishing, but does not address the shell-command path.

Move publish finalization into a domain service.
The RPC handler coordinates publishRepository, identity resolution, and status refresh. A caller that uses SourceControlRepositoryService.publishRepository outside this handler will not get the same refresh behavior. Keep the RPC handler to one service call, and put the finalization with the publish operation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines, “A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service's typed errors to the transport's error. Nothing else.” As per path instructions, “WebSocket handlers should decode the request, call one service method, and map typed errors.”

Assert that the failed-publish path requests a forced identity refresh.
This RPC test catches a regression that skips refresh calls after a publish failure. But its resolve mock records only cwd, so it still passes if the handler drops { refresh: true }. The resolver can then return its cached no-remote result after the publish adds origin. Record and assert the option here; the resolver’s lower-layer tests already cover its cache behavior.

verified the server refresh on exact head 5f64876bc4345d679052d9cd28334898544a226c, against github/main at 57cd05904d, with one isolated dev server at a time on linux. used repository playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome, app-created git projects and threads, and real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns that wrote and committed the readme. no mocks or demo data.
real github publishing created a private repository and added origin, then the first ssh push failed with host_key_unverified.
on main, an authenticated subscribeVcsStatus subscription received the initial hasPrimaryRemote: false snapshot and the publish RPC failed, with no subsequent status update during observation.
on the pr, the same websocket flow received localUpdated with hasPrimaryRemote: true after the publish failure. the ui publish flow also received that update without a reload.
after changing the remote to https through a provider turn, the real git.runStackedAction push succeeded. the github branch hash matched local head d28c132a3e93ca44dd6b14ff1d51c18621bdba7f, and the upstream became origin/main.
a separate https publish through the ui reached "Repository published". github and local head both matched da77d4f80167809d4bcbd2aa58261d57ab9d9973.
vp test run apps/server/src/ws.test.ts through blacksmith: 16 passed. the head has 31 successful ci checks, zero failing or pending. no source changes were needed.
baseline limitation: the stronger claim that push becomes usable is not true for a new main-only repository with no upstream and aheadCount: 0. push remains disabled on both revisions because of the existing client action gate. opening the git menu also explicitly refreshes status, which can mask the stale state on main. this verification proves the server finalizer, not a fix for that separate gate.
native desktop, ios and android clients; macos/windows; other source-control hosts or other first-push failure reasons; project grouping across environments. these were outside the exercised linux web/github path. ui retry for the zero-ahead case above remains unavailable; recovery was verified through the running server websocket action.
Assert the forced identity refresh: done in ce3f393. The test's repositoryIdentityResolver.resolve mock now records refresh=${options?.refresh === true}, and the test expects identity /repo refresh=true. Dropping { refresh: true } from the handler now fails the test (received identity /repo refresh=false). An independent review also checked that success, failure and client interruption each refresh the identity and start the status refresh.
Move publish finalization into a service: leaving this in the handler. Refreshing after a Git operation through the local refreshGitStatus helper is how ws.ts already works on main, at about ten sites, including this handler's previous success-only path. This PR only moves that refresh into Effect.ensuring so a failed push still refreshes. Moving refresh into the services would change all of those handlers together, so it belongs in its own refactor.
