fix(server): ACP MCP bridge no longer splits messages on U+2028/U+2029 - #30719
ACP agents reach T3 Code's MCP tools through t3 acp-mcp-bridge, which frames stdin with node:readline. Readline also ends a line at U+2028 (LINE SEPARATOR) and U+2029 (PARAGRAPH SEPARATOR). JSON.stringify leaves both characters raw inside strings, and MCP stdio clients send messages that way: the official SDK writes JSON.stringify(message) + "\n" and splits only on \n.
So when a tool call's arguments contain either character, for example text pasted from a PDF, Word document, or web page, the bridge cuts the message into fragments. It answers each fragment with a -32700 Parse error that has id: null, and never forwards the request. Because the agent never gets a reply carrying its request id, the tool call hangs until the agent's own timeout.
Change
Frame stdin with Stream.decodeText and Stream.splitLines instead of node:readline. splitLines ends lines at \n, \r\n and a lone \r, the same terminators readline used, but not at U+2028/U+2029. provider-pi's RPC reader avoids readline for the same reason (packages/provider-pi/src/server/rpc.ts:1).
A trailing \r and a final unterminated line are still handled as before.
Multi-byte characters split across chunks still decode correctly, because decodeText streams.
The bridge no longer imports a Node built-in, so the nodeBuiltinImport:off directive is removed.
Scope and approval
This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so it uses CONTRIBUTING's exception for those. The bridge drops valid JSON-RPC messages that every other part of the chain (the MCP SDK on one side, the HTTP endpoint on the other) accepts. Pi's comment shows the readline behaviour is already known.
I found no existing issue or PR for it. I searched open and closed PRs and issues for 2028, line separator, AcpMcpStdioBridge, acp-mcp-bridge, readline JSON-RPC, and mcp bridge framing. Open PRs that touch this file (#30022, #30043, #28683, #19387, #14420) don't change the stdin framing. #29727 fixed CR handling in response streams, which is a different path.
Verification
Windows 11, Node 26.12.1, base 8b44f42b14.
Regression test. Added keeps U+2028 and U+2029 inside a message instead of splitting it to AcpMcpStdioBridge.test.ts. The test writes the message the way process.stdin can deliver it: split inside a multi-byte character and without a trailing newline. With main's bridge it fails: no request is forwarded. With this change all 10 tests in the file pass.
Runtime check. Spawned the real node apps/server/src/bin.ts acp-mcp-bridge against a local MCP HTTP stub and sent one tools/call whose argument holds raw U+2028/U+2029. The separators below are shown escaped for readability; on the wire they were raw.
Fast checks.vp run check:changed origin/main passed format, lint, both Knip checks, GraphQL, typecheck for 3 affected packages, and the tests beside the change.
Not checked: I did not run a live ACP provider session end to end. The runtime check drives the same bridge entry point that ACP agents spawn, with a stub in place of the T3 MCP endpoint.
Implemented and verified with Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) in the Claude Code harness.
node:readline treats U+2028 and U+2029 as line breaks, but JSON.stringify
leaves both characters raw inside strings. A tools/call whose arguments
contained either one was cut into invalid fragments, answered with
parse errors, and never forwarded, so the agent's tool call hung.
Frame stdin on line feeds with Stream.splitLines instead, matching the
LF-only framing Pi's RPC already uses for the same reason.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The bridge now preserves Unicode line and paragraph separators inside JSON messages rather than splitting them. The change is limited to input framing, with authorization and forwarding behavior unchanged and targeted runtime verification reported.

Walkthrough
The stdio bridge now reads input directly and uses Stream.splitLines to separate messages. A test checks that messages containing U+2028 and U+2029 remain intact across input chunks and that the bridge writes the response.

The bridge converts string chunks to buffers, decodes the text, and splits it with Stream.splitLines before dispatch. The diagnostic suppression for nodeBuiltinImport is removed. The test checks message forwarding when input is split within an emoji’s UTF-8 bytes and has no trailing newline.
The reviewed framing change has focused regression coverage and no established merge-blocking risk.

Explanation
The title "fix(server): ACP MCP bridge no longer splits messages on U+2028/U+2029" states the main change. The raw summary shows the bridge's stdin framing moved from node:readline to Stream.decodeText and Stream.splitLines, and a regression test covers U+2028/U+2029 handling. The title is specific, follows conventional commit form, and matches the description's problem statement.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains the readline line-splitting bug on U+2028/U+2029 and the resulting -32700 parse errors and hangs. The Change section describes the switch to Stream.decodeText and Stream.splitLines. The Scope section invokes the small-fix exception and lists searched issues and PRs. The Verification section gives a regression test, a runtime comparison on main and on the branch, and the checks run. It also states what was not tested and names the model and harness. The Scope section is the weakest part. It relies on the small-bug exception and does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval. The template allows this exception when the author explains why the fix qualifies, and the author does so.

verified unchanged head 4d5af60e8980710364e3bed5bdc4751b8a827f75 on linux with real dev servers, chrome/playwright, and codex gpt-6.1-sol. no mocks or demo data.
reproduced on github/main (8b44f42b14c8), installed in a separate worktree: the real bridge initialized against the running T3 MCP endpoint, then a raw U+2028/U+2029 thread rename produced three -32700 parse errors with id: null. no matching reply arrived within the probe's 15-second limit. a real codex turn ran this probe from the web client.
on the exact pr head, added a real git project through the web app and started a real codex thread. configured an additional stdio MCP server running node apps/server/src/bin.ts acp-mcp-bridge against that dev server's authenticated MCP endpoint. codex called the bridge's actual tools: unicode rename → read → ascii rename → read → unicode rename → read. all six persisted provider tool calls completed, and all returned titles matched exactly, including raw U+2028 and U+2029.
neighboring checks passed: initialization/tool discovery, ordinary ascii calls, CRLF framing, and UTF-8 supplied one byte at a time with emoji, accented text, and both separators. readback preserved every code point. the permission guard also correctly rejected a broader target mode; matching this test thread's mode to the MCP client's auto mode allowed the scenario to proceed.
vp run check:changed 8b44f42b14c8e273156474a924ccf29680dd7857 passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, both knip checks, graphql, affected typechecks, and 11 tests, including all 10 bridge tests. no source edits or pushes were needed.
the ACP provider launcher's automatic bridge registration was not exercised with a separate ACP agent. the changed bridge itself was exercised by codex's real stdio MCP client and against the real T3 endpoint. native desktop, ios/android, macos/windows, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised on this linux VM.

Cover split UTF-8 and unterminated input at the bridge boundary.
The current test sends one LF-terminated chunk. It does not exercise the reachable process.stdin case where UTF-8 bytes arrive in separate chunks and the final JSON line has no newline.

…bridge
Deliver the U+2028/U+2029 message the way process.stdin can: split inside a
multi-byte character and without a trailing newline, which readline handled
and the stream framing must keep handling.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks, agreed. Those two cases are exactly what replacing readline could have broken, and the single LF-terminated chunk didn't exercise them.
In 4eecd16 I changed how the existing regression test delivers its message instead of adding a new test. The message now also carries an emoji. It is written as two chunks split inside the emoji's UTF-8 bytes, and the last line has no trailing newline. The test still asserts the request is forwarded byte-for-byte and answered with its own id.
It passes on this branch. Against main's bridge it still fails, because U+2028/U+2029 split the message, so it remains the regression test for this fix.

A byte-mode PassThrough can hand both synchronous writes to the async
iterator as one buffered read, so the split never reached the decoder and
a naive per-chunk decode still passed. Use an object-mode input for this case.
