Problem

Onboarding omits linked worktrees of a bare repository when its valid core.bare value is numeric rather than true or 1. Git treats nonzero integers such as 2, -1 and 01 as true. The scanner's isBareGitConfig helper returned false, so those worktrees were filtered out as ordinary linked worktrees.

Change

Read Git's numeric boolean forms, including signs, octal/hexadecimal prefixes and k/m/g suffixes, while retaining zero as false and rejecting invalid or out-of-range integers. Preserve the existing named booleans and last-setting-wins behavior. No other config grammar or scanner selection policy changes.

Scope and approval

This is a small correction to an obvious external-format parsing bug under CONTRIBUTING.md's focused-fix exception. The existing scanner deliberately offers bare-backed worktrees; valid numeric true values should take the same branch as true. All-state issue and PR searches for isBareGitConfig, core.bare and numeric boolean terms found no matching fix.

Verification

Linux x86_64, Node 26.12.1, base 32ecd71726fee16f335484c1f95cbce126d461f6.

  • Added a focused regression in packages/shared/src/git.test.ts. On unchanged main it fails at bare = 2 (expected false to be true). With the fix, all 29 tests in that file pass.
  • Temporarily changed the existing AgentSessionScanner.test.ts bare-worktree fixture from bare = "true" to bare = 2 and ran vp test run src/project/AgentSessionScanner.test.ts -t 'offers bare-repository worktrees'. Main omitted both dev and prod candidates and failed; the fix passes. Restored the scanner fixture afterward, keeping regression coverage at the parser layer rather than duplicating it.
  • Runtime comparison with Git 2.52.0 (git config --file - --bool --get core.bare) matches signed, octal, hexadecimal and suffixed integer forms, zero values, and invalid/overflow cases. For example: 2, -1, +1, 01, 0x10, 1k and -2147483648 all change from false to true, matching Git. 0, -0, 0x0 remain false; 08, 1.5, 2no, 2g and 2147483648 remain rejected as non-true.
  • vp run typecheck in packages/shared passes.
  • vp run check:changed upstream/main: formatting, lint and both knip checks and changed-file tests (30/30) pass. The dependent-package typecheck is blocked by the environment (failed to initialize seccomp_unotify supervisor: Operation not permitted), not a reported TypeScript error. Full dependent-package typechecking is not verified locally.
  • git diff --check passes.

Not checked: browser onboarding, native desktop/mobile, or Windows/macOS runtime. The scanner service regression ran on Linux.

Walkthrough

isBareGitConfig now interprets core.bare using Git boolean values and signed numeric values in decimal, octal, or hexadecimal form. Tests cover value boundaries, invalid forms, and repeated settings.

Changes: Git config parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bare value interpretation
packages/shared/src/git.ts, packages/shared/src/git.test.ts
isBareGitConfig delegates core.bare interpretation to isTrueGitConfigValue. The helper recognizes true, yes, and on, plus nonzero signed decimal, octal, or hexadecimal values with optional lowercase k, m, or g suffixes when the result is within signed 32-bit bounds. Tests cover accepted and rejected values, boundaries, and repeated settings.

current takeover update: merged current main (a185dd924889) without rebasing, producing 812041a05f130b0c3ef190281a48aa794c8a046f. resolved the test conflict by keeping both the numeric cases and main's continuation cases. the diff remains two files, 57 additions and one deletion. pushed to the original contributor branch without force. github reports mergeable.

blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed format, lint, both knip checks, all 34 affected package typechecks, and 33 selected tests. focused parser/scanner run passed all 97 tests. runtime comparison against git 2.43 matched ten named, numeric, zero, invalid, and overflow cases; continued numeric input also parses correctly. two independent read-only reviews approve this exact head without findings. ci is running.

unverified this run: fresh browser/provider integration, native clients, other platforms, and git 2.52 boundary comparison. prior evidence below describes its original verified head.

thanks to macodev00 for the focused fix and regression coverage. merged current main into the original branch at 1c0a9090d38f06f61f2d7a77ff30928390530d26. kept the original implementation and tests: the two-file diff already has the smallest scope that preserves git's numeric syntax and overflow checks. no scanner selection changes.

verification:

  • reproduced the parser failure on current main at bare = 2.
  • temporarily used bare = 2 in the existing bare-worktree scanner fixture: fails on main, passes on this head. restored the fixture to avoid duplicate permanent coverage.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passes formatting, lint, both knip checks, all 33 affected package typechecks, and 31 tests. the full scanner file also passes all 53 tests.
  • real web onboarding scan against a real bare repository with core.bare=2: the linked worktree is missing before and listed after. the ordinary repository remains listed.
  • git 2.43.0 runtime comparison matches 24 named, numeric, zero, invalid, and overflow cases. this older git rejects -2147483648; retained the original's git 2.52 behavior for that boundary.
  • two independent read-only reviews approve this exact head without findings. all 28 ci checks pass on this head.

unverified: a fresh git 2.52 runtime comparison, windows/macOS runtime, native desktop/mobile, and relay/tunnel clients.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 1c0a9090d38f06f61f2d7a77ff30928390530d26 on linux using the real dev web client, repository Playwright, Google Chrome, and Codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local provider proxy. no mocks, fixtures, or replay data.

  • reproduced on github/main (6d46336476) in a separate worktree: onboarding omitted a real linked worktree with core.bare=2, despite its successful Codex conversation.
  • created the repositories through the app terminal and projects/conversations through the web UI. stopped main before starting the exact PR head with isolated state.
  • the same onboarding scan on this head lists numeric-worktree. selected it and imported one project and one real conversation. opened its imported history and saw the original NUMERIC_BARE_OK response.
  • sent a fresh turn from the imported project with gpt-6.1-sol; it returned PR27500_IMPORTED_NUMERIC_OK and reached done.
  • neighboring behavior: a named-boolean bare-backed worktree (core.bare=true) and ordinary repository remain listed; an ordinary linked worktree (core.bare=false) remains excluded. each had a real provider conversation.
  • blacksmith: vp test run packages/shared/src/git.test.ts apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionScanner.test.ts passed all 83 tests. all 28 CI checks pass at the verified head. no source changes or pushes were needed.

short runtime transcript

before: main omits numeric-worktree from onboarding

after: PR lists numeric-worktree with the same provider conversations

import numeric-worktree and complete a real gpt-6.1-sol turn

Not verified

native iOS/Android, Electron desktop shell, macOS/Windows, relay/tunnel connections, and non-Codex providers were not exercised on this Linux VM. numeric forms other than 2 were covered by the existing parser tests rather than individual browser imports. uploaded video playback and seeking were checked in Chrome.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject Git’s invalid negative boundary.

Git rejects -2147483648 because its numeric parser uses -2147483647 as the lower bound. This check accepts it, so an unusable repository can enter the bare-repository scan path. Update the bound and move the expectation in packages/shared/src/git.test.ts Line 84 to the rejected values. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
