feat: /clear starts a fresh session in the same thread - #30325
Users had no way to trigger the fresh provider session from the previous layer.
/clear (slash menu, or sent on its own) arms a fresh session for the thread's next message on web, desktop, and mobile. A composer notice says the next message starts fresh; dismissing it keeps the current session. The timeline shows a New session divider above the first fresh message. T3's /clear replaces the provider's own /clear in the menu, which would clear a session T3 still treats as live. Clients offer it only on servers with the freshContext capability.
Web keeps the armed state per thread in ChatView; planComposerTurn never compacts or steers a fresh turn.
Mobile keeps it per draft, carries freshContext on the outbox entry, and re-arms it when a rejected message is restored to the draft.
Agents get freshContext on t3_thread_send. mcp-tool-use gains thread-send-fresh-context, and the named-thread send guard now also forbids freshContext on an ordinary send. The tool list grows by 144 bytes.
User docs: composer.
Before: no /clear. After (web, replay provider):
Built with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code).
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds an opt-in fresh provider session while preserving the existing thread history. Unresolved concerns around questions and approvals require confirmation that messages start in the session users expect and that the composer notice accurately reflects that behavior.

The change adds /clear fresh-session controls to web and mobile composers. It carries freshContext through turn dispatch, adjusts web turn planning for fresh-context sends, restricts steering promotion for fresh-context queued runs, and marks fresh-session boundaries in thread timelines.
The client and server accept and forward freshContext. Fresh-context requests in steer and restart modes use queue delivery. Evaluation and service tests cover fresh-context sends.

The web composer offers /clear when fresh sessions are available and tracks pending state with a dismissible banner. Timeline rows mark fresh-context messages with “New session.” Documentation describes /clear.

pingdotgg/t3code#30097 — The change skips pre-send compaction for a fresh-context turn, but does not describe changes to idle compaction.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review d603e
The /clear feature mostly works, but a few edge cases are still open. While an approval or question is pending, /clear can arm a fresh session without any visible notice. A fresh message queued behind a /compact run cannot skip compaction. These are bounded, recoverable workflow gaps, not data loss, but they should be resolved or accepted before merge.

Hide /clear while a question owns the composer.
When a question accepts a custom answer, the menu can still offer /clear. Selecting it arms a fresh session, but shelfItems hides the notice while the question is open. The next answer goes to the current session instead. Disable the command until the question is resolved.

Update the `/clear` availability logic in ChatComposer so the command is
disabled while a question owns the composer and becomes available again once the
question is resolved. Preserve the existing fresh-session availability condition
for other composer states.

Approval feedback does not start the armed fresh session.
When freshSessionPending is true and an approval is visible, a text-only send takes the approval-feedback branch at lines 1094–1128. That branch sends the text to the pending approval and returns. It never reaches the turn-start path, so freshContext is not applied. The composer notice says the next message starts a fresh session, but this message continues the existing session. The pending state stays set, so the following normal send does start a fresh session.
Decide the intended behavior for this case. Either the approval-feedback branch should not run while freshSessionPending is true, or the notice should not promise a fresh session for approval feedback. The first option changes the send flow after the approval decline, so check that path before you change it.

Review comment at @apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerSend.ts at line 900:
In the send flow that uses freshSessionPending, resolve whether
approval-feedback sends should start a fresh session or continue the pending
approval flow. Check the approval-decline path before changing the
approval-feedback branch: if feedback should start fresh, prevent that branch
from consuming the send while preserving decline behavior; otherwise, update the
composer notice so it does not promise a fresh session for approval feedback.

Block typed /clear while an approval owns the composer.
The command is not offered during an approval, but directly typed /clear still reaches the intercept, arms freshSessionPending, and clears the draft. FreshSessionNotice is hidden in this state, so the user receives no indication that a later message will start a fresh session. Preserve the existing behavior that an already armed flag survives the approval redirect; the test for that behavior is intentional.

Review comment at @apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts at line
553:
Update the `/clear` interception around `isClearComposerCommand(text)` to reject
newly typed commands while an approval owns the composer, preventing the command
from arming `freshSessionPending` or clearing the draft in that state. Preserve
an already armed `freshSessionPending` flag across the approval redirect.
@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on typed /clear during an approval (use-thread-composer-state.ts): fixed in d7aa1f1. Mobile only treats /clear as the command when no approval redirect owns the send, so a typed /clear there goes to the approval as its text and nothing is armed out of sight; an already armed session still survives the redirect. Web applies the same rule: the command, typed or from the menu, is only available while no question or approval owns the composer. Covered by "sends a typed /clear with an approval redirect as that reply's text", which fails on the previous head.

@juliusmarminge Verified the fix in d7aa1f18792 through the commit diff.
Mobile now requires beforeDispatch === undefined before treating /clear as a command. An approval redirect receives /clear as reply text.
Web uses the same ownership guard for typed /clear and the menu command.
The regression test checks that the redirect receives /clear and no fresh session is armed. The existing send guard preserves an already armed session during a redirect.
This addresses the outside-diff finding. I inspected the source and test changes; I did not run the tests.

On mobile, when an approval redirect owns the send through beforeDispatch, pass typed /clear as reply text without arming or consuming a pending fresh session. On web, disable both typed and menu-based /clear commands while a question or approval owns the composer, and preserve any already armed fresh session for the next ordinary message.

… run
Scheduled tasks gain threadMode: new_thread, continue, or fresh_session.
One-thread modes launch their thread on the first run and keep it, and
fresh_session sends each later run with freshContext. Settings on web and
mobile show a Destination picker on servers with the scheduledTaskThreadModes
capability, and schedule_task takes freshSession. A save that omits
threadMode keeps the stored mode, and a save clears a binding only when the
mode becomes new_thread.
Pulled from upstream pingdotgg#30326 at head 9662b37.
This commit squashes the PR's own 9 commits (f92bbbd through 9662b37,
the range refs/factories/pr-30325..pr-30326). Every file except
agentContextBudget.json matches that range's diff.
Conflict in apps/server/src/provider/agentContextBudget.json. Upstream sets
mcpToolListJsonBytes to 47858. The fork's tool list is larger, so the fork
value was 61779. AgentContextBudget.test.ts measures 61955 with this change,
the same +176 bytes upstream reports, and the file now holds 61955. The other
two budget values keep the fork's numbers.
Slice of pingdotgg#30325 (head 5a80b42). Scheduled
tasks call ThreadManagementService.sendToThread with freshContext, so this
commit takes two hunks from ThreadManagementService.ts: the optional
freshContext field on ThreadManagementSendInput, and the line that passes
it to message.dispatch. The send uses mode "queue", so the hunk that turns a
fresh steer or restart into a queue is left out. No contract change is
needed because message.dispatch already takes freshContext from pingdotgg#30323. The
composer /clear command, the web and mobile UI, the t3_thread_send
freshContext parameter, its ThreadLaunchService test, and the docs from
pingdotgg#30325 are not included.
The migration stays at upstream's Migrations/080_ScheduledTaskThreadMode.ts
instead of ForkMigrations/ because it belongs to a pulled upstream PR, and
upstream main has no migration 080 yet.

Factory code reaches pulled upstream PRs only through
apps/server/src/factories/upstream/index.ts, which re-exports one module per
dependency as a namespace. No consumers exist yet.
- freshContext.ts (pingdotgg#30323 and the pingdotgg#30325 slice): FreshSendInput, a
ThreadManagementSendInput with freshContext set to true;
MessageDispatchFreshContext, the type of the message.dispatch command's
freshContext field; and FRESH_CONTEXT_CAPABILITY, the "freshContext" key of
ExecutionEnvironmentCapabilities.
- scheduledThreadMode.ts (pingdotgg#30326): the ScheduledTaskThreadMode schema and
type, the scheduledTaskThreadMode helper, FRESH_SESSION_THREAD_MODE, and
ScheduledTaskUpsertWithThreadMode, an upsert input that always states its
threadMode. Both come from contracts, so nothing is taken from
ScheduledTaskService.ts.
- homeToolkit.ts (pingdotgg#15975): the FleetService tag with FleetActor,
FleetInvokeInput, FleetRequest, FleetOperation, FleetInput, FleetResult,
and the FleetResults decode map; the HomeWatchReport, HomeWatchEvent,
HomeWatchEventKind, and HomeWatch types; isHomeLaunchedThreadId; and
reportToHome, which calls HomeService.report. It wraps report instead of
re-exporting the HomeService tag, because the tag can also enable and
disable Home.
knip.jsonc lists src/factories/upstream/index.ts as an apps/server entry, so
knip neither reports the file as unused nor its exports. No ignore was needed.

Web, desktop and mobile offer /clear in the slash menu and as a standalone
message on servers that report the freshContext capability. It arms the next
message to start a new provider session, shown in a composer notice that can be
dismissed, and the timeline marks the boundary with a New session divider.
Agents get the same through freshContext on t3_thread_send.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Web keeps armed /clear per thread outside ChatView, and a send clears only the
arm it used. /clear is handled before plan follow-ups, and an armed send skips
the plan follow-up path. Web and mobile hide /clear while a question, approval
or queued-run edit owns the composer. Mobile stores the armed state with the
draft, so it persists and rolls back with a restored message. A fresh
t3_thread_send with mode steer or restart queues instead of failing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The queue on web and mobile offers Send now for a fresh message only when it
starts its own turn; the server refuses steering it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A message sent as an approval redirect belongs to that approval, so it carries
no freshContext and leaves the armed session for the next message.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A /clear typed while an approval or question owns the composer is that reply's
text, not the command, so nothing is armed out of sight. A queued fresh message
can skip a running compaction again, since that starts it as its own turn.

73 upstream commits. Upstream merged pingdotgg#27935, so fork section 26 is gone.
Conflicts:
- Mobile composer state, outbox model and providers-claude.md: upstream's
final pingdotgg#27935 and the /clear fresh session (pingdotgg#30325) replace the copy the
fork carried; taken from upstream.
- thread-list-v2-items.tsx: pingdotgg#30944 builds the row menu in one memo, so the
ephemeral-thread menu (section 11) moved into it.
- ThreadDetailScreen.tsx: pingdotgg#30325's setFreshSessionPending beside the
citation imports (section 13).
- SelectableMarkdownText.types.ts: pingdotgg#30704's task checkbox handler beside
the citation menu items (section 13).
- modelTraits.ts: pingdotgg#27034's ultracode beside the localized labels (section 2).
- ws.ts: pingdotgg#23758's framed socket beside the session renewal (section 6).
- Preview host, channel and ServerBrowser: pingdotgg#24186's idle agent tab reclaim
beside background windows (section 24). Background tabs count only
streamed viewers, and idle ones still close.
- agentContextBudget.json: 49,377 MCP tool bytes.
Upstream's new Effect rules (pingdotgg#31111, pingdotgg#31217) flagged the fork's
development-signing Effect.try and two fork tests; fixed. The Claude
adapter fork test's fake session gains pingdotgg#29803's MCP methods.

Superseded: side chats keeping the main thread's permission mode now come from upstream pingdotgg#31114; Cody's ThreadForkService, ProviderTurnStartService and useSideChat overrides are gone and the docs line about it is removed.
Superseded: the web scheduled task row's "Posts to" label gives way to upstream's link to the thread (pingdotgg#31764); mobile keeps the label beside upstream's Open thread action.
Adapted: the "Post runs to" picker sits beside upstream's thread mode Destination (pingdotgg#30326). Picking a thread sets a one-thread mode, "no thread" is offered only where a save can unbind, and saves send threadMode, since the server now keeps a stored thread unless the mode is new_thread. Shared rules live in scheduledTaskThreads.ts; upstreamWiring.test.ts pins the web and mobile calls.
Adapted: upstream's Labs zen view (pingdotgg#30000) also keeps the answer before a short wrap-up, on web and mobile, with zen cases in both wrap-up tests.
ChatView.logic: Cody's worktree base ref plus upstream's fresh-context dispatch mode (pingdotgg#30325).
agentContextBudget.json: upstream's new sizes plus Cody's 371-byte final answer block.
build-desktop-artifact.test: mac and Linux now unpack @transcribe-cpp libraries (pingdotgg#30625).
Skill sync notes updated for thread modes, side chat permissions and the zen view.
