fix(mobile): iPad composer drops when the keyboard floats or minimizes - #31251
On iPad, when the keyboard stops being a docked keyboard, the thread composer stays lifted at the docked keyboard's height and leaves an empty band under it. The reporter hit this by floating the keyboard bar into the small pill at the bottom right; it stays wrong until the app is switched away from and back.
Reproduced on main (b28bb8f) on an iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) simulator running iPadOS 26: open a thread, tap the composer, then press the keyboard's hide key while the composer keeps focus. iPadOS 26 leaves its minimized keyboard. UIKit first posts keyboardWillShow with a full-width 68.5pt frame at the bottom of the screen, then moves the keyboard with a duration-0 keyboardWillChangeFrame to {y 1206, h 66, w 1032}, which ends above the 1376pt screen bottom, and never posts keyboardWillHide. The composer stays lifted by about 60pt over empty space, even after it loses focus.
Change
Every keyboard consumer in the mobile app (the composer's KeyboardStickyView, the chat list inset, useKeyboardState) is fed by react-native-keyboard-controller's iOS KeyboardMovementObserver. That observer only listens to keyboardWillShow and keyboardWillHide, and takes the end frame's height whether or not the keyboard is docked. Upstream 1.22.9 and upstream main behave the same way.
The existing pnpm patch for react-native-keyboard-controller 1.22.8 now also patches the observer:
A keyboard counts as docked only when its end frame spans the screen width and reaches the bottom of the app: the screen bottom, or the app window's bottom when that is higher, as in Slide Over, where UIKit reports the docked keyboard ending there. A floating, split or minimized keyboard covers no app content, so it counts as hidden. This follows Flutter's engine classifier, including its Slide Over correction; the width half matches React Native's own KeyboardAvoidingView fix.
A keyboardWillShow with such a frame takes the existing hide path.
The observer also listens to keyboardWillChangeFrame. When that frame is not docked and a keyboard is currently reported, it runs the hide path one runloop turn later. A keyboardWillShow or keyboardWillHide arriving in between cancels it, so hide events fire once and a newer docked show is never undone.
Docking again arrives as a normal full-width keyboardWillShow. Nothing else in the observer changes, and there are no app code changes.
iOS simulator dev-client builds of each patch revision compiled on EAS; the head's patch is native fingerprint 49b84f1f.
vp run check:changed: unused patches, format, typecheck (40 packages) and the affected test all pass.
Before = main b28bb8f (client ad96c4f9), after = this branch (client 49b84f1f, head b7f2636). Same seeded synthetic project and thread, fresh simulator per run, light theme, no device emulation, 1x simulator screenshots. iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) is 1032×1376 portrait; iPhone 17 Pro is 402×874.
iPad, keyboard docked then hidden with the composer focused (the bug): composer drops back to its resting position.
Docked row: the diffs show only the clock, the relative-time labels and the caret. After-hide row: the composer and the message list move down by the band; nothing else changed.
iPad rotation with a docked keyboard (after only): the composer stays above the keyboard in landscape and after rotating back, so the new docked check does not misfire on rotation.
Simulator driving: the device was leased from a shared simulator pool, the client installed by native fingerprint, the JS served by Metro from this checkout, and the app paired to an isolated dev server with a fresh database holding one synthetic project and thread. Then: tap the thread, tap the composer, press the keyboard's hide key, take a screenshot.
Not checked:
cannot-verify ios-device: the reporter's exact trigger, a hardware keyboard with the keyboard bar collapsed to the pill, and the floating mini keyboard. The pool simulator has no hardware-keyboard toggle, and its pinch gesture is too wide to land on the keyboard. By the code: the floating keyboard is narrower than the screen, so it counts as hidden. A pill reported with a short frame that is narrower or ends above the screen bottom counts as hidden too. A pill reported with an empty frame already resolves to height 0 in the library. The pill's actual frame was not observed.
iPadOS before 26, Split View, Slide Over, Stage Manager and an external display.
The last commit, 3540949 (Slide Over: the docked bottom is the lower of the screen bottom and the app window's bottom), has not been compiled or captured; its EAS build was still running when this round ended. The captures above are from b7f2636. For the full-screen cases above the window bottom equals the screen bottom, so their classification is unchanged.

On iPadOS, undocking the keyboard (floating mini keyboard, or the
hardware-keyboard shortcuts bar collapsed to its pill) left the thread
composer lifted at the docked keyboard height. react-native-keyboard-controller's
iOS KeyboardMovementObserver only listens to willShow/willHide and takes the
end frame height as-is, while UIKit undocks with willChangeFrame (and sometimes
willShow) carrying the narrower floating frame.
Extend the existing pnpm patch so a non-empty keyboard frame narrower than
its screen counts as hidden: willShow with such a frame takes the hide path,
and willChangeFrame with one hides only while a keyboard is reported, deferred
a runloop turn so a willShow/willHide posted alongside fires events once.
Docking again arrives as a full-width willShow and shows normally.

On iPadOS 26, hiding the keyboard while the composer keeps focus leaves a
minimized keyboard. UIKit moves it with a full-width frame that ends above the
screen bottom (y 1206, height 66 on a 13-inch iPad, duration 0) and posts no
willHide, so the composer stayed lifted. A keyboard counts as docked only when
it spans the screen width and reaches the screen bottom.

The patch updates iOS keyboard frame handling for floating or minimized keyboards. It adds inset compensation to chat scroll calculations and changes bottom-padding reporting and scroll-indicator padding.

Summary
Keyboard lifecycle and chat scroll compensation patches/react-native-keyboard-controller@1.22.8.patch
The iOS observer defers hide work for floating or minimized keyboard frames and cancels pending work when a show, hide, or later frame-change event occurs. Chat scroll calculations use bottom and leading inset compensation, and clamp non-inverted offsets. The chat scroll view reports effective bottom padding and uses keyboard padding for scroll indicators. iOS presentation height updates during movement and keyboard events.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 35409
The patch fixes the iPad composer staying raised after the keyboard floats or minimizes. Re-docking a floating keyboard may leave the composer hidden behind the keyboard, depending on UIKit notification behavior that has not been verified on a device. Test the floating-to-docked transition on an iPad, or handle docked frames in the frame-change handler, before merging.

Explanation
The title names the iPad composer drop when the keyboard floats or minimizes, which matches the main change: the patched KeyboardMovementObserver now treats floating, split, or minimized keyboards as hidden. It follows the conventional commit format and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem and Change sections are clear and specific. Scope cites issue #31223 and a GitCafe triage link, and Verification gives detailed before/after evidence with an explicit list of what was not checked. The template asks for an approval comment or maintainer-approved discussion, and the description does not include one. It cites an automated triage flow instead. The template also asks that the reviewer can verify the approval, so this is a gap. The overall description is otherwise thorough and mostly complete.
Resolution
Consider adding a link to the maintainer approval comment for the direction and scope of this fix, or explain why the automated triage flow meets the approval requirement. The rest of the template is covered.

Explanation
Requirement [#31223]: on iPad, the composer returns to the bottom when the keyboard stops being docked. Evidence at reviewed head b7f2636: the PR captures show the composer returning to rest after the docked keyboard is minimized with the composer focused. This is a full-screen iPad case, and the observer change classifies its frame as hidden. The prior PASS remains supported for this case. Four gaps remain. (1) The reporter's exact trigger, the floating pill, was not observed. The pill frame is unknown, so the fix's effect on that state is established only by code reasoning. (2) The current head 3540949 adds a Slide Over docked-bottom change. It has no compile result and no capture. (3) The description conflicts on that rule. The Change section says the docked bottom is the screen bottom, or the window bottom 'when that is higher'. The commit note says 'the lower of the screen bottom and the app window's bottom'. For full-screen iPad the window bottom equals the screen bottom, so the issue case is not affected, but the intended rule is unclear. (4) No repository inspection tool was available. The code at the head was not read in this review.
Resolution
Provide a compiled build and simulator capture at head 3540949 for the iPad full-screen hide case with the composer focused. Provide the observed frame for the floating pill state, or a capture showing the composer at the bottom in that state. State the single intended docked-bottom rule in the PR description so it matches the code and commit note.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The observer patch changes are connected to [#31223]. They alter how the composer, chat-list inset and useKeyboardState react to keyboard frames. The Slide Over change at 3540949 is also tied to docked classification. The AI-generated change summary, however, reports app-code changes in src/components/KeyboardChatScrollView (types.ts, useChatKeyboard/helpers.ts, useChatKeyboard/types.ts). These cover adjusted-inset compensation, scroll-offset clamping, onContentInsetChange padding reporting, and the scroll indicator inset. The PR description states there are no app code changes and that nothing else in the observer changes. The captures do not exercise scroll offset, scroll indicator inset, or chat-list padding reporting. The summary also lists +87/-0 lines, which does not clearly account for both the patch and the app-code hunks. No repository inspection tool was available to confirm which hunks exist in the whole-PR diff. A concrete unrelated change is not demonstrated. Its absence is also not established.
Resolution
Confirm from the whole-PR diff (merge base 935818e to head 3540949) whether the KeyboardChatScrollView hunks exist. If they exist, update the PR description to explain each one and its link to #31223, and provide evidence for chat-list behavior under the keyboard. If they do not exist, correct the change summary.

Handing over the issue-watch investigation. At main 935818e422f9b58c46e14d70f4ef386fa3575105, I confirmed that the iPad composer's sticky translation follows keyboard-controller directly, and that 1.22.8 ignores interactive position zero while expecting a hide notification. The Android AppState recovery does not apply to iPad. My dropped-zero hypothesis remained unproven; your captured UIKit frame sequence is stronger evidence.
No independent on-device reproduction or fix verification completed. I leased an iPad Pro 13-inch (M5), iOS 27.0, but app installation was interrupted by server restarts before the keyboard flow ran. No focused tests ran and no source changes were committed or pushed.
The baseline iOS dev client compiled successfully on physical shiv with Xcode 27.1: vp run mobile:install ios --prepare, exit 0, native fingerprint e8f78d5e730353790c0a572575c387141109cfa4. This proves compilation only. I have no independent runtime screenshots, recording, or keyboard-event transcript to add.

Restore the docked keyboard height when a floating keyboard docks.
In patches/react-native-keyboard-controller@1.22.8.patch, line 40 returns for every docked frame in keyboardWillChangeFrame. A docked frame does not cancel pending hide work or restore the keyboard height. If the observer hid the keyboard while it floated, and UIKit reports the redock only through keyboardWillChangeFrame, the height can stay at zero. The composer can then remain at the bottom while the docked keyboard covers it. The result depends on whether UIKit sends a show notification on redock.
Handle docked frames in this handler. Cancel pending hide work, then restore the docked height through the same logic that keyboardWillAppear uses (patch lines 24-31). Test the floating-to-docked transition on iPad.

Problem
On iPad, when the keyboard stops being a docked keyboard, the thread composer stays lifted at the docked keyboard's height and leaves an empty band under it. The reporter hit this by floating the keyboard bar into the small pill at the bottom right; it stays wrong until the app is switched away from and back.
Reproduced on main (b28bb8f) on an iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) simulator running iPadOS 26: open a thread, tap the composer, then press the keyboard's hide key while the composer keeps focus. iPadOS 26 leaves its minimized keyboard. UIKit first posts
keyboardWillShowwith a full-width 68.5pt frame at the bottom of the screen, then moves the keyboard with a duration-0keyboardWillChangeFrameto{y 1206, h 66, w 1032}, which ends above the 1376pt screen bottom, and never postskeyboardWillHide. The composer stays lifted by about 60pt over empty space, even after it loses focus.Change
Every keyboard consumer in the mobile app (the composer's
KeyboardStickyView, the chat list inset, useKeyboardState) is fed by react-native-keyboard-controller's iOSKeyboardMovementObserver. That observer only listens tokeyboardWillShowandkeyboardWillHide, and takes the end frame's height whether or not the keyboard is docked. Upstream 1.22.9 and upstream main behave the same way.The existing pnpm patch for react-native-keyboard-controller 1.22.8 now also patches the observer:
KeyboardAvoidingViewfix.keyboardWillShowwith such a frame takes the existing hide path.keyboardWillChangeFrame. When that frame is not docked and a keyboard is currently reported, it runs the hide path one runloop turn later. AkeyboardWillShoworkeyboardWillHidearriving in between cancels it, so hide events fire once and a newer docked show is never undone.Docking again arrives as a normal full-width
keyboardWillShow. Nothing else in the observer changes, and there are no app code changes.Scope and approval
