fix(server): Claude context meter shows the window for models outside the catalog - #30051
A Claude model outside the bundled catalog, such as one added with Add custom model for a
gateway or router, gets a context meter with used tokens but no limit or percentage. The adapter
reads the context window only from the bundled catalog (claudeContextWindow and getModelContextWindow), so every custom model reports maxTokens: null.
Claude Code already knows the window: every SDK result reports modelUsage[model].contextWindow, the window Claude Code compacts against.
Reproduction: on a Claude instance whose endpoint serves a non-Anthropic model, add that model with Add custom model, select it, and send a message. On T3 Code 0.1.6 with custom model MiniMax-M78, the meter shows only the used count ("60k") with no limit.
Change
The adapter records the window each result reports per model, and uses it when the catalog has no
entry: for live usage, compaction updates, and getModelContextWindow. When a result first reveals
a window, the turn's last measured usage is emitted again so the meter gets its limit before the
turn settles instead of on the next turn. Catalog models keep their catalog windows.
claudeProviderTurnTokenUsage now takes the resolved window instead of the selection, so the
window is resolved in one adapter-scoped place.
Scope and approval
A small fix for an obvious defect in an existing feature: custom Claude models are documented in providers-claude.md,
and their meter cannot show a limit. It adds no setting and changes nothing for catalog models.
#16583 also touches claudeContextWindow (it scopes compilation to the live catalog, and keeps
unknown windows unknown). The two fix different problems; whichever lands second needs a small
rebase.
Verification
New adapter case measures a model outside the catalog against the window Claude reports fails on main (maxTokens stays [null]) and passes with the fix ([null, 1048576], and getModelContextWindow returns 1048576 after the result).
vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts apps/server/src/provider/TurnTokenUsage.test.ts: 314 passed.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, and tests pass.

… the catalog
Custom and gateway Claude models had no context window: the adapter only read
the bundled catalog, so the meter showed used tokens with no limit or
percentage. Claude Code already reports the window it compacts against in each
result's `modelUsage[model].contextWindow`.
The adapter now records that reported window per model and uses it when the
catalog has no entry, for live usage, compaction updates, and
`getModelContextWindow`. When a result first reveals a window, the turn's last
usage is re-measured so the meter fills in before the turn settles. Catalog
models are unchanged.
Claude Opus 5.5 (MiniMax Code)
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Claude now uses SDK-reported context windows when a model is absent from the catalog, refreshing usage telemetry and making the window available to handoff budgeting. Catalog values and existing settings retain precedence, keeping the change narrowly scoped.

Walkthrough
The Claude adapter now obtains context-window limits from the bundled catalog or Claude result-frame model usage. It uses resolved limits for token-usage calculations and runtime lookups, and retains compaction token counts for context-usage updates.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the Claude context meter now shows the context window for models that are not in the bundled catalog. It uses the conventional commit form and matches the raw summary, which describes a fallback to the window SDK results report. The title is specific and does not name files or use vague terms.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives the expected behavior and a reproduction path. The Change section explains the per-model window fallback and the re-emit of usage. Scope and approval cites the provider documentation and explains why the fix is small, and it notes the overlap with PR #16583. Verification lists a failing-then-passing adapter test, test and check runs, and a runtime transcript. It also states what was not checked. The template's linked triaged issue or maintainer approval is not present, and the author justifies the change as a small fix of an obvious defect instead. That justification is a template-allowed path, so the description is mostly complete.

reproduced on github/main (cefb544af3) in a separate worktree, then ran the exact pr head (82d619a877) and the fix at f508bc0b03. used Playwright from the repo with /usr/bin/google-chrome, one background dev server at a time, isolated empty state, and projects and threads created through the app. all turns used real providers through the local gateway; no mocks, fixtures or replay data.
a custom gpt-6.1-sol model on the Claude provider exercises the gateway/custom-model path outside the Claude catalog. main persisted usedTokens: 19277, maxTokens: null. the pr's first completed turn persisted usedTokens: 19298, maxTokens: 200000; the client displayed 19k / 200k and 10% used before another turn. follow-up and reload retained the limit.
found and fixed the compaction edge case in the existing review: after restarting the server, native /compact learned the window in its result but left the meter at 6.4k. the fix retains the compaction watermark separately from streamed usage. re-running the real flow after a clean restart persisted usedTokens: 8441, maxTokens: 200000; the client displayed 8.4k / 200k. a subsequent real turn completed and displayed 23k / 200k.
nearby paths still work: catalog Claude Haiku 5.5 retains its catalog limit of 1000000; Codex gpt-6.1-sol completes with its own 258400 limit. both were exercised again after the fix.
extended the existing compaction test. its new assertion failed on the original pr ([null] instead of [null, 200000]) and passes with the fix. Blacksmith passed all 314 focused tests and vp run check:changed cefb544af3c98224874419198c0359b652ca3c94 (format, lint, knip, GraphQL, affected typechecks and tests).
native desktop and iOS/Android clients were not exercised on this Linux VM. automatic threshold-triggered compaction, other gateways such as OpenRouter/MiniMax, older Claude Code versions, and cross-model window changes were not exercised. the gateway rejected the retired Haiku 4.5 identifiers; catalog coverage used the available Haiku 5.5 instead. GitHub CI for the pushed fix is separate from the passing Blacksmith checks and was still starting at the last check.

Retain the last valid usage measurement.
A later message_start can replace valid usage with a zero-input placeholder. The result then selects that placeholder, which emitContextUsage rejects, so the newly reported window is never emitted. This sequence is covered by an existing usage test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Retain the last accepted measurement separately and clear it at compaction.

Refresh each turn that has not emitted the window.
If two sessions use the same custom model concurrently, both can emit usage with maxTokens: null. The first result populates the adapter-wide cache. The second result reports the same window, so it is not marked and its turn never emits the limit. Compare the resolved window with the window last emitted for this turn instead.
