fix(web): picking a branch in a subfolder project keeps the thread in the project folder - #29908
Some projects are a subfolder of a git repo, such as repo/packages/app in a monorepo. In those projects the web branch picker mistakes the project's own checkout for a separate worktree. Picking the current branch from a local thread, or picking the main checkout's branch from a worktree thread, sets the thread's worktree to the repository root (repo). The thread then switches to worktree mode at the repo root, any running session stops, and the agent and terminal start in repo instead of repo/packages/app.
The cause: the server reports a branch's worktreePath as the root of the checkout it lives in (git worktree list, plus the current branch mapped to --show-toplevel). resolveBranchSelectionTarget only recognised the project's own checkout when that path was exactly equal to the project root, and in a subfolder project it never is.
Change
resolveBranchSelectionTarget now treats a ref's worktree as the project's own checkout when the project folder is inside it (or is it). It checks this with the existing shared workspaceRelativeFilePath helper, which also handles Windows separators and case. In that case the thread stays in local mode on the project folder. Refs in other worktrees behave as before. Mobile already does this: checkout-new-task-branch.ts returns no worktree for the current branch.
Scope and approval
Very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so no prior issue: one comparison in a single web helper, changed so the picker never moves a thread out of its own project folder. It touches no contracts and no server code.
Overlap search: #24447 (open) keeps subfolders in new worktree threads and does not touch this helper. #26254 (open) adds a multi-repo keepWorktree branch to the same function, and #15255 (open) adds a stop-session guard. Neither covers subfolder projects.
Verification
Server behavior, confirmed with a real run: for a project at <root>/nested, listRefs returned main as current with worktreePath: <root>.
Red on main: I extended the existing switches back to the main repo when the ref already lives there case with subfolder-project rows. It failed with Expected "nextWorktreePath": null / Received "nextWorktreePath": "/repo".
Green: vp test run src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.test.ts passes, 18/18.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The branch picker now keeps subfolder projects in their project folder when selecting a branch in the project's own checkout. The change is narrowly scoped to checkout recognition and leaves other worktree behavior unchanged.

Walkthrough
Branch selection now uses the active project checkout root to determine whether to reuse an existing worktree. Tests cover root and nested project paths, with and without an active worktree.

Reuse an existing worktree apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbarBranchSelector.tsx, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.test.ts
The selector passes the active project checkout root to the target resolver. The resolver identifies the project checkout using a relative-path check when the root is unavailable, and an exact root match when it is available. Tests cover root and nested project paths and worktree states.
pingdotgg/t3code#14245: Both changes concern branch selection and worktree-path updates, but this PR does not change session-stop behavior or add a mid-turn guard.

Explanation
The title names the change: picking a branch in a subfolder project no longer moves the thread out of the project folder. It matches the raw summary, which says the resolver now treats a worktree containing the project cwd as the project checkout. The title follows the conventional commit format from the template, and it is concise.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section gives the cause and the reproduction context (subfolder project in a monorepo, thread switching to repo root). The Change section explains the containment check and the helper it uses. The Scope section explains why no prior issue is linked, and it lists overlapping PRs. The Verification section gives a red/green test result, a real-run check, and the commands run, and it states what was not checked. The description does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval, so the scope justification depends on the small-fix exemption. The description also does not list the follow-up commit handling undefined checkout roots, which the PR objectives describe, and the raw summary does not show that behavior. The template's requirement for the model and harness is met. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

Delta on top of your 5648f0c: one commit, b73107c, answering CodeRabbit. While the project's checkout root is still unknown (status loading, failed, or missing rootPath), the resolver uses the containment rule, so a pick made in that window keeps the thread in the project folder instead of moving it to /repo. Once the root loads, your exact comparison applies unchanged. New undefined-root rows in the existing table fail on 5648f0c and pass now, and an independent GPT-6.1 Sol review approved it.

Do not infer checkout identity from containment.
If the project is at /repo/nested-checkout/packages/app and its checkout root is /repo/nested-checkout, selecting the ref at /repo while the root is unavailable returns nextWorktreePath: null. The selector then records the selected branch but keeps the thread in the nested checkout. The refs and project status load separately. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Wait for a reliable checkout root before classifying this case, or obtain the checkout identity from another reliable source. Add the undefined-root case to the existing secondary-worktree test.

This is the other side of the trade-off from the previous finding, and I'm keeping the current behavior for now. Until the checkout root arrives, the resolver can't tell a subfolder project (/repo/packages/app, where /repo IS the project's checkout) from a project inside a nested worktree (/repo/nested-checkout/packages/app, where it isn't). Every option is wrong for one of them during that window:
Containment (current): the subfolder case is right. In the nested case the thread stays in its checkout with the new branch recorded, until the root resolves and the next pick classifies it exactly.
Treating the containing checkout as foreign: the nested case is right, but the common subfolder case moves the thread to /repo and stops its session. That's the bug this PR fixes.
Blocking picks of refs that live in another checkout until the root loads: if the status query fails, those refs stay unusable.
I chose containment because its failure mode is the least destructive (nothing moves and no session stops), and the window only lasts until the status query returns. An independent review accepted the same trade-off. If maintainers would rather block picks while the query is pending, falling back to containment only on failure, that's a small follow-up in BranchToolbarBranchSelector.

@saphid Understood. You chose containment to preserve the subfolder-project behavior when the checkout root is unavailable. I won’t press for blocking branch picks in this PR.
The nested-worktree mismatch remains a known limitation. Once the checkout root loads, subsequent picks use the exact comparison; loading the root does not itself correct an earlier selection. This is an accepted trade-off, rather than a fix for the reported case.

Learning: In the TypeScript/React web client, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx uses resolveCheckoutBranchMismatch for both dedicated and shared worktrees. A dedicated worktree can trigger the notice when its agent switches branches. The client cannot infer sharing from a branch mismatch or worktree path; path aliases make sharing detection a server-side concern. Do not require the mismatch notice to call a checkout "shared" without authoritative sharing information.

No replay provider, mocks, or seeded database.
Reproduced on main: selecting the current main ref moved the thread from packages/app to the repository root and stopped its provider session.
On this head, the same selection retained packages/app, local mode, and the provider session. The following real Codex turn confirmed the directory.
Selecting an existing secondary worktree ran Codex in that worktree on feature/worktree. Selecting main from there returned Codex to the project subfolder.
Selecting an ordinary local branch switched the actual checkout to feature/local while keeping Codex in the project subfolder. The built-in terminal also returned packages/app and main after returning to the project checkout.

Read-only server events corroborate this: main persisted worktreePath=/home/user/branch-selection-app and provider-session.detached with reason client-requested. This head persisted worktreePath=null with no provider detachment for current-main selection. Switching to and from the secondary worktree still detached the session as expected.

Native iOS/Android, Electron shell, macOS/Windows, remote/relay/tunnel connections, and other providers were not exercised on this Linux web-client pass. The nested-worktree case while the project checkout-root query is unavailable was not reproduced; the containment fallback discussed above remains outside this verification.
