fix(web): deleted forks no longer remain in Lineage - #29000
Deleting a fork could leave its UUID and a Queued status in the parent's Lineage. Lineage now checks related threads omitted from the shell and hides a row only after the server confirms that thread no longer exists. Existing and archived forks, subagent history and context-transfer history stay available.
Evidence
Linux desktop on physical corex, Electron 44.10.1. Head e094b2797fe3321beac3e717df1dcafde3961d75; main 8b44f42b14c8e273156474a924ccf29680dd7857. Real UI-created forks and free Replay turns in isolated test data. Deletion and compatibility videos play at 2x speed.
Creating the real fork on head, before copying its stopped environment for the same-data comparison:
real-fork-creation.mp4
Before, main: delete that fork with the parent open, then reload. Its 7a6808ff… UUID/Queued row remains alongside the archived fork, existing fork, unloaded fork and completed agent.
before-main.mp4
After, head: the same deletion removes the row live and after reload. Archived, existing and unloaded forks keep their titles; the completed agent and retained transfer history survive.
after-head.mp4
Actual older-server compatibility: the head desktop client receives Unknown request tag: orchestration.getThreadTitles from the unmodified main server, preserves relationships, opens Existing fork through Lineage and returns to the parent.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Lineage now checks whether unlisted related threads still exist, removing deleted fork rows while preserving archived threads and subagent history. The lookup is read-only, uses the existing read scope, and retains rows when lookup results are unavailable.

Walkthrough
The change adds a getThreadTitles orchestration RPC backed by the projection store. The client refreshes title queries after relevant shell removals. The Lineage panel uses lookup results to label related threads and filter non-subagent rows confirmed absent.

Summary
Title lookup contract and storage packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.test.ts
The RPC and projection-store contracts add title lookup by thread ID. The store returns titles for existing non-deleted threads, including archived threads, and returns an empty record for an empty request. Tests cover active, archived, deleted, and unknown threads.
The service and WebSocket handler expose the lookup. The RPC uses the orchestration read scope, is assigned to the orchestration aggregate, and maps lookup failures to the shell-snapshot error. Test doubles provide unused-operation stubs.
Refresh title queries after shell removals packages/client-runtime/src/state/orchestration.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.test.ts, apps/web/src/state/orchestration.ts
The orchestration query can refresh when a requested thread's removedAt value changes. The web state supplies shell state. Tests cover relevant and unrelated removals, pending results, empty responses, and errors.
Use lookup results in Lineage apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadRelationshipsControl.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadRelationshipsControl.browser.test.tsx
The panel queries titles for related threads absent from live shells. It prefers lookup titles and filters non-subagent rows only after a settled successful lookup confirms no title. Browser tests cover existing, deleted, archived, pending, and failed-lookup cases.
No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed change.

Explanation
Issue #28978 is the only directly linked issue and it is open. Prior evidence at head 0180da2 covers all coding requirements. Deleted and unknown IDs are omitted by ProjectionStoreV2.getThreadTitles, while archived titles are returned. ThreadRelationshipsPanel looks up titles for IDs absent from the shells and prefers them over the ID. Subagent edges bypass the hiding filter. Rows stay visible while the lookup is pending or failed. The threadTitles query re-runs when removedAt changes. Server, runtime, and 15 browser tests cover these behaviors. The final head e963d7b changes only ProjectionStore test fixture titles. A diff of ThreadRelationshipsControl.tsx between the previous reviewed head and the current head returned no changes. The ProjectionStore.test.ts diff could not be read because blobs are missing, so this test-only change rests on the PR summary. No unmet coding requirement is shown.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Each changed area supports deleted-thread hiding or title preservation for #28978. Changes span the contracts and RPC, RpcAuthorization scope, RpcInstrumentation, Orchestrator, ThreadManagementService, ws.ts wiring, ProjectionStore SQL, client-runtime shellState refresh, web state wiring, the panel, and tests. Test doubles add only a stub for the new interface method. The final head changes only ProjectionStore test fixture titles. No unrelated product behavior change is shown. The PR description names archived-row navigation redirect, #26766, and #22385 as outside this fix, and the summary shows no change in those areas.

Explanation
The description clearly covers the problem, the implemented change, and detailed verification evidence. It links issue #28978 and documents test conditions, compatibility limits, and UI results. It does not provide an explicit maintainer approval comment or a separate Scope and approval section, but the linked issue and focused-fix context make the description mostly complete.

takeover update, 2026-11-04: merged current main 8b44f42b14c8e273156474a924ccf29680dd7857 into the existing head with merge commit 0de77cab15214a3eac346788ca02310c2d226ab0. resolved only the overlapping imports in runtime.test.ts, preserving both tests. the original pr diff remains 16 files, +333/-6. pushed without force.
all ci is complete with no failures or pending checks; git.cafe reports 33 successful contexts and github reports mergeable. no unresolved review threads. earlier own-property and distinct-title findings are already fixed. two independent read-only sol reviews found no blockers on this exact head.
blacksmith passed vp run check:changed github/main: format, lint, knip, graphql, typechecks for 36 packages, 202 tests in 13 files, and react compiler checks. an additional focused run passed all 98 tests in ProjectionStore.test.ts, runtime.test.ts, and ThreadRelationshipsControl.browser.test.tsx. the worker snapshot omits ancestry, so its temporary comparison ancestry was attached to the fetched main solely to let check:changed compare the exact 16-file diff. no repository source or forge history was changed for that setup.
fresh chrome check on this merged head: completed a free replay turn through the real provider pipeline, created two forks using the response control, and deleted one through the sidebar context menu and confirmation. its row disappeared from the still-open parent without navigation or reload; the surviving fork remained. no projection fixtures or mocked rpc. the recording was trimmed, uploaded, played to completion, and seeked successfully.
this pass did not repeat desktop, mobile, archived-thread navigation, other providers, older-server, or remote-mode verification. earlier evidence below remains historical. task-owned dev services and blacksmith worker were stopped. no merge, rebase, force-push, or label changes were performed.

On github/main (61c3794c32b0eeebfac09add43e403618c65d2d7), added a real git repository through the web app, completed a Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn, created three forks with the response's fork control, archived one and deleted another. A fresh client reproduced the bug: the deleted fork remained in Lineage as its UUID with status Queued. The server retained its real context-transfer history.
Started the exact PR head after stopping main, using a copy of that app-created state. The deleted UUID disappeared while the surviving and archived forks retained their titles. The screenshots show the same parent and fork data. No mocks, fixtures or demo provider were used.
On the PR, created another fork through the UI and completed another real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn. In a fresh client with the parent open, deleted that fork through its sidebar context menu and confirmation dialog. Its Lineage row disappeared without navigation or reload; the archived and surviving rows stayed. Reopening the parent also kept both deleted forks hidden. Following the surviving fork opened its inherited conversation and completed response.

Blacksmith focused checks passed this run: 94 tests across ProjectionStore.test.ts, runtime.test.ts and ThreadRelationshipsControl.browser.test.tsx. The first browser-check attempt lacked Chromium; installed it on the worker and reran successfully. GitHub currently reports 24 successful checks and 11 skipped checks, with none failing or pending (GitCafe had reported 33 successful contexts). No source changes or pushes were needed. Task-owned dev servers and the Blacksmith worker were stopped.
Not verified
Native desktop, iOS/Android, other providers, remote/relay/tunnel connections, historical subagent results, and compatibility with an actual older server were not exercised on this Linux VM. Pending/error lookup behavior was covered by the existing browser checks, not fault-injected into the real app.
Archived-thread title preservation passed. Opening the archived row redirected to a new draft on both main and this head; archived-thread navigation therefore remains a pre-existing failing neighboring behavior, not a successful verification claim.
Use distinct fixture titles in the getThreadTitles assertion.
The create helper sets each title to the thread ID. The expected record at lines 1096-1108 therefore cannot tell a stored title from an ID. If getThreadTitles returned row.thread_id instead of row.title, this test would still pass. The Lineage panel would then show UUIDs as titles, and the test would not catch it.

Addressed the title-fixture nit in e963d7b9cc29fa171e2037e2726348cee9e849aa. Active and archived titles now differ from their IDs, so returning IDs would fail the existing assertion. Deleted, unknown and empty-input checks remain. The focused title-lookup regression passed.
Playback correction: the final-desktop and older-server videos below now point to fresh, complete recordings. The original MP4 uploads were incomplete. The replacements use an equivalent fresh projection fixture without a provider turn; the still images and main recording remain from the original run.
Completed both missing evidence checks without changing the source. Final client and desktop head e963d7b9cc29fa171e2037e2726348cee9e849aa; current main and older server cefb544af3c98224874419198c0359b652ca3c94.
Linux desktop before and after
Physical corex, Electron 44.10.0 on an isolated X11 display, separate test homes. Boat job j_3ap7vqplip5d23ruva4m exited 0 and built both exact commits with vp run build:desktop, five tasks passed for each. Runtime archive SHA256:
main e3db8403f1aecdf0607fdf41bf5d85b6953b3a5bcc42c36e67972d65f82f10f2
final abf17474a06e55d79b83db954ef205ff87c7a21474f4927d397bc3c6121a4a27
Both apps started from identical retained-transfer projection fixtures with two active forks, one archived fork and one previously deleted fork. Each recording opens the parent, selects “Fork to delete”, confirms deletion through the native desktop UI, then returns to the parent. These recordings navigate to the child for deletion; the earlier web recording separately covers deletion while the parent stays mounted.
Main shows the previously deleted 4444… row, then adds the newly deleted 1111… UUID/Queued row. Existing and archived forks survive.
Ran the final Electron app and final client assets on corex against the real, unmodified main server that lacks this PR's RPC. For this compatibility fixture, all 27 server JavaScript files matched the main build byte for byte, all 1,172 client assets matched the final build, and the desktop files came from the final build. The app launched that older server as its local backend on loopback port 18980. No mocked RPC, response interception or source patch was used.
The actual client span exported to the test server's trace recorded:
After that failure, Lineage still showed “Fork to delete”, “Existing fork”, “Archived fork” and the unresolved 4444… row. Clicking “Existing fork” in Lineage opened that thread. Clicking its “Lineage parent” relationship returned to the same intact panel. The recording shows this round trip after the failed lookup.
The fixture verifies rendering, real deletion commands and relationship navigation, not complete fork event history. Parent conversation data came from the free Replay provider. Windows execution remains unverified; Linux desktop supplies the requested alternative. Mobile has no Lineage panel. Archived-row navigation is the previously reported neighboring behavior, outside this fix. No account sign-in or paid provider turn was used.
The live head/base remain unchanged. Required checks pass, the review thread is resolved, CodeRabbit reports no actionable findings at this head, and Macroscope approves this head. No automatic merge is enabled.
Re-recorded both rejected videos in the Linux desktop app on physical corex. The prior uploads were incomplete MP4 files copied before the recorder finalized them. These replacements were copied only after the recorder exited, ffprobe read their complete indexes, and ffmpeg -v error -xerror -i <file> -f null - decoded every frame successfully.
Client and Electron build: e963d7b9cc29fa171e2037e2726348cee9e849aa. Server for the compatibility recording: the unmodified main build at cefb544af3c98224874419198c0359b652ca3c94. Both are the exact retained artifacts from successful Boat job j_3ap7vqplip5d23ruva4m, run in Electron 44.10.0. The compatibility fixture again verifies all 27 server JavaScript files against the main artifact and all 1,172 client assets against the final artifact. No RPC mocks or source edits.
Replacement for the final desktop deletion recording
Fresh equivalent retained-transfer projection fixture. The video starts with the parent listing “Fork to delete”, “Existing fork” and “Archived fork”; the already-deleted 4444… row is absent. At about 11 seconds the desktop shows the deletion confirmation. After confirming and returning to the parent, both deleted endpoints are absent and the existing and archived titles remain.
The video begins after that failure with active, archived and unresolved relationships still visible. At about 15 seconds, clicking “Existing fork” in Lineage opens that thread. At about 17 seconds, clicking its “Lineage parent” relationship returns to the intact parent panel.
This fresh projection fixture has no complete fork event history and no provider turn. It verifies the actual desktop display, deletion command and relationship navigation. Existing main-before evidence and earlier parent-mounted live-deletion evidence remain linked in the PR body. Windows remains unverified; the shared desktop behavior is shown on Linux. No source changes were needed.
Main advanced to b7ab02e0f6077a72cadfa5c9a40db4db67bc325f during this pass. Reviewed all four intervening commits: provider refresh banners, Pi token persistence, markdown copying and side-chat model-switch text do not change the title lookup, relationship derivation or panel. An in-memory merge against that main succeeded without conflicts. The PR's diff and intended fix remain applicable.
Downloaded both replacement assets from GitHub after upload. SHA256 matched the completed local files and both downloaded copies passed full ffmpeg -v error -xerror -i <file> -f null - decoding with exit 0.
Final readiness also reviewed main through 171f78b87918e065427a9d45f5a3f27a6738ae78. Its later sidebar project picker, model-row layout and project-removal count changes do not alter this fix or its tested deletion/navigation path. The in-memory merge remains conflict-free.
The Lineage panel builds rows from the thread's retained context transfers,
so a fork deleted after it was made stayed as a Queued row labelled with
its ID. A thread missing from the shell does not prove deletion, because
archived and older settled threads are left out too.
The panel now asks the server for the titles of related threads the live
shell does not list. The read lives on ProjectionStore and includes
archived threads but skips deleted ones. A fork, transfer or parent row is
hidden only after a settled, successful lookup leaves it out; pending and
failed lookups keep the row. Subagent rows and transfer history are
unchanged. Removing one of the looked-up threads from the shell re-runs the
lookup, since deleting an already omitted thread keeps the query's ids the
same.
Based on Albert Li's prepared fix (Alb11747/t3code 7d58d6c), with the
read moved into ProjectionStore behind ThreadManagementService and the
re-check trigger moved into client-runtime.

CI passed. Independent final source review found no findings.
The PR body shows the actual final-head UI creating fork 7a6808ff-e142-456e-9edd-4ed21924ff46, followed by main/head deletion and reload recordings from copies of that stopped real environment. A cold client loads the retained outgoing transfer before deletion; the parent remains mounted during deletion. No projection records were injected. Archived and unloaded forks and the completed subagent survive. The unloaded fork appears through its retained context transfer. All five context-transfer records and the completed subagent record are byte-identical before and after deletion.
The actual older-server run uses all 27 server JavaScript files from the unmodified main build, all 1,177 client assets and all 15 desktop files from head, verified byte for byte. The desktop client trace records Unknown request tag: orchestration.getThreadTitles; the recording then shows preserved relationships and navigation to Existing fork and back. No RPC mock or source patch.
All uploaded videos were finalized before copying and passed full-frame decoding. Their downloaded GitHub copies match the originals by SHA256. Windows, relay and tunnel execution remain unverified. Native mobile has no Lineage panel.
Rechecked unchanged head e094b2797fe3321beac3e717df1dcafde3961d75 against main through 62db6623cb30ed32968fc9ee0db1ea5355f9b39a. The sole overlapping file is AgentAwarenessRelay.test.ts; the integration preserves both main's signing-key layer and this PR's title-lookup stub. The merge is clean, and the PR patch is identical before and after the base move. Independent review found no incompatibility or superseding fix.
Verified unpublished integration tree 355437d2b5603383487ef4acf789a46800912072 against main 8ab024f31a6d285015c4fb84e52a0183f614e237, with its dependencies and new Effect compiler. Boat job j_vsrvcjx6wvzpmq74dkny also exited 0: both RPC subscription-defect recovery cases passed, covering input and stream failures. Both VMs were deleted after artifact collection.
No production Lineage files changed on main, so the existing recordings retain their original head provenance. No branch rewrite or new UI capture was needed for this base move.
The final base move from 8ab024f31a6d285015c4fb84e52a0183f614e237 to 62db6623cb30ed32968fc9ee0db1ea5355f9b39a changes only AgentSessionScanner.test.ts. It makes an unrelated test await neighboring process reads before advancing its test clock. It changes no production code, dependencies or PR file. Reviewed that diff; the merge remains clean. No further test or recording is affected.

Closes #28978
What it fixes
Deleting a fork could leave its UUID and a Queued status in the parent's Lineage. Lineage now checks related threads omitted from the shell and hides a row only after the server confirms that thread no longer exists. Existing and archived forks, subagent history and context-transfer history stay available.
