feat: pin favorite projects and archive old ones - #26154
Projects pile up. There was no way to keep favorites at the top of the project pickers or to hide projects you are done with. This rebuilds #15990 at under half its size.
How it works
Pin a project and it comes first in the project pickers: the sidebar project filter, the new-thread heading, the command palette, scheduled tasks, and mobile. Pin from the pin button in the sidebar project filter, or in Settings → Projects.
Boring sidebar (#21039): pinned projects get the top folders and keep them with no active threads, so their new-thread button stays one click away. Right-click a folder to pin or unpin it. An archived project still gets a folder while it has active threads, below the open projects.
Archive a project in Settings → Projects and it leaves those pickers. Threads, settings, and files are kept. Archived projects stay in the Settings project picker, marked Archived, with Unarchive on their page. Adding the same folder again (palette, mobile, desktop open-folder) also unarchives it.
Mobile: Settings → Projects → Organize has Pin and Archive.
Agents: t3_project_update gets pinned and archived from the shared payload.
Server
pinnedAt and archivedAt on the project record (migration 073), through the existing project.update mutation and project.meta-updated event. A projectOrganization capability hides the controls for older servers.
Projects on several machines
Clients write every machine's record, one at a time, and need every machine connected and operable. If records still disagree, the project stays visible: pinned when any record is pinned, archived only when every record is (pickableProjectGroups in packages/client-runtime). The settings panel's write loop moved into useProjectGroupUpdate, which the sidebar shares.
No drag order for pins. Pins keep your project sort order.
Archive does not hide threads. Older settled threads are counted on the server in pages, so hiding them would make the "N settled" count lie.
No new Projects list page, and the pull request project filter is unchanged: it narrows existing PRs, and archived projects can still have open ones.
Before / after
Some project names are masked.
Sidebar project filter. A pinned project leads, its unpin icon shows on hover of the pin itself, and the archived project is gone:
Settings → Projects gains Pin and Archive, and the project picker marks archived projects:

Verification
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests.
Tests: multi-machine rules and picker order (client-runtime), pin and archive times in the planner and store (server), Archive writing every machine's record while one machine is picked (web browser test), pins ahead of the current project, "No project" placement, the new-thread picker rule, scheduled-task defaults, and the mobile last-project rule.
Web, headless against a dev server seeded from a copy of real data: pin and unpin from the sidebar filter, Archive and Unarchive in Settings, the archived project leaving the filter, and, after the rebase, boring mode folder order, a pinned empty folder, and the folder menu.
Rebased onto main with the boring sidebar and the multi-project filter. Archived projects drop out of a multi-project selection the same way they dropped out of a single one.
Eval: new mcp-tool-use case archive-project-not-delete passes 2/2 on GPT-6.1 Sol. Claude models were not run (no API key on the test machine).
Not tested: mobile on a device (typechecked, with unit tests for the shared logic), and a second live machine.
Council review
Rounds: 9. Rounds 8 and 9 reviewed the rebase onto main with the boring sidebar and the multi-project filter.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds project pinning and reversible archiving while preserving threads and files. Human confirmation is needed for the changed scheduled-task project defaults, particularly automatic selection after switching environments.

Projects now support pinning and archiving across persistence, project updates, grouping, and web and mobile interfaces. Pinned projects appear first in pickers, while archived projects are excluded from most project choices. Settings and the web sidebar provide organization controls subject to access, connection, and server capability checks.

Project schemas and the database projection include nullable pin and archive timestamps. The store reads, writes, and retains those values.
Project updates accept optional pin and archive flags. The server converts supplied flags into timestamps and forwards them through project updates. The server environment advertises the organization capability.
Project groups derive pin state from any pinned member and archive state from all archived members. Pickers omit archived groups and order pinned groups first. Project filters, scheduled-task choices, scope labels, and draft selection use these states.
The update hook checks access, connection status, and server capability before updating group members sequentially. Web and mobile settings provide pin and archive controls under their stated conditions. The web sidebar provides a pin control.

Adding an existing archived project or opening a thread for one requests unarchiving in the described flows. The documentation and evaluation case cover project organization behavior.

Pinning and archiving can produce inconsistent project choices, and failed unarchive actions can still open drafts or threads. These behaviors should be corrected before merging.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is thorough and mostly follows the template. It has a Problem-like opening ("Projects pile up"), a Change section ("How it works", "Server", "Projects on several machines", "Smaller than #15990"), and a detailed Verification section that lists the commands run, the test areas covered, the manual web checks, an eval result, and what was not tested. Before/after screenshots are included for the UI changes, as the template requires. Two gaps remain. The "Scope and approval" section is missing: the description does not link a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion. It refers to a prior PR (#15990) and a boring-sidebar PR (#21039), but it does not show that maintainers approved the direction and scope of this change. The template also asks for a conventional commit title, and no title is supplied in the provided text. The Verification section does not explicitly describe the mobile manual check; it says mobile was not tested on a device. That disclosure is acceptable under the template, which asks for anything that could not be checked.
Resolution
Add a "Scope and approval" section that links the triaged issue or the maintainer discussion that approved this direction and scope, including the approval comment. Because this PR is large and adds new features (pin and archive), a plain statement that it is a small, obvious fix will not satisfy the requirement. Also confirm that the PR title uses a conventional commit format in plain language, such as "feat(web): pin and archive projects". Keep the existing Verification section. Optionally, state how the new migration 073 was checked against an existing database.

Keep archived groups available to the Project settings lookup.
If the active thread belongs to an archived project, this filter removes its group from projectGroupByTargetKey. When another group sorts first, the Project settings action opens that other project. Keep the picker filtered, but resolve the settings action against all projectGroups. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The settings Button receives ml-auto through className in the fallback branch. The repository rule says layout classes such as margin belong on the parent, and components/ui controls should not be restyled through className. Move the margin to a wrapper span. Pinnable rows already get their margin from the pin wrapper, so the settings wrapper only needs the margin when the pin control is absent.
