Projects pile up. There was no way to keep favorites at the top of the project pickers, hide projects you are done with, or see every project in one place.

How it works

  • Pin a project and it comes first in every project picker, in an order you can drag. Pickers: the sidebar project filter, the new-thread heading, the command palette, and mobile.
  • Archive a project and it leaves the pickers. Its threads leave the sidebar, the command palette, and the mobile lists. Nothing is deleted, and threads keep their state. Undo is in the toast, and Unarchive brings everything back.
  • Settings → Projects is now always in the settings nav. With no project picked, it lists every project with search, Active/Archived, a draggable Pinned section, thread counts, and pin, archive, and settings buttons. Picking a project opens the project settings that exist today, which gain Pin and Archive rows.
  • The command palette gains Pin project / Unpin project for the current project, and Projects to open the list.
  • On mobile, Settings → Projects & threads → Overview gains Organize with Pin and Archive.

Server

pinnedAt, pinOrderKey, and archivedAt are new fields on the project record. They use the existing project.update mutation and project.meta-updated event, plus migration 057 for the columns. Pin order uses the same fractional keys as thread pins. Pin and archive do not change updatedAt, because they are not activity. A projectOrganization capability tells clients to hide pin and archive on older servers. MCP t3_project_update gets pinned and archived through the shared payload.

Projects on several machines

A project on several machines is one record per machine. Clients write pin and archive to every record, and refuse while one of those machines is offline or on an older server, the same rule as renaming. If records still disagree (for example, an agent changed one), the project stays visible. It is pinned when any record is pinned, and archived only when every record is archived (packages/client-runtime/src/state/projectOrganization.ts).

Before / after

Project names and paths in these screenshots are replaced with placeholders.

Settings → Projects, before and after:

before: Projects page with name chips
after: Projects list with a Pinned section

Archiving shows Undo, and the project moves to Archived:

after: archive toast with Undo
after: Archived view with Unarchive

Sidebar project filter, before and after. Pins come first, and archived projects are gone:

before: sidebar project filter
after: sidebar project filter with pins

New-thread heading menu, before and after:

before: heading project menu
after: heading project menu with pins first

Verification

  • Typecheck: contracts, server, client-runtime, web, mobile.
  • Tests:
    • server: planner rules (pin, re-pin, unpin, a pin order without a pin, archive, updatedAt kept), and the store round trip through the new columns.
    • client-runtime: the multi-machine rules, pin ordering, and record pickers.
    • web: pinned-first sorting, the archived thread filter, and group state in picker entries.
    • mobile: scope order and multi-machine state.
    • Existing migration and palette suites also pass.
  • Web, against a dev server seeded from a copy of real data:
    • Migration 057 applied.
    • Pin and unpin from the list, the panel switch, and the sidebar filter.
    • A keyboard drag reorder saved one key per record.
    • Archive hid the project from the filter and heading, and hid its snoozed thread (shelf count 6 → 5 → 6 after Unarchive).
    • The palette showed the new actions.
    • After the review fixes:
      • drag still saves;
      • a search filters pinned rows and turns drag off until it is cleared;
      • pin/unpin from a row round-trips;
      • Archive then Undo restores the project.
  • Not tested: mobile on a device (typechecked, with unit tests for the shared logic), and a second live machine. The multi-machine rules have unit tests.

Projects can now be pinned and archived. Pinned projects come first in
every project picker, in an order you drag. Archived projects leave the
pickers and their threads leave thread lists until you unarchive them.
Settings → Projects lists every project with pin, archive and settings.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a substantial pin/archive capability across web, mobile, server persistence, contracts, and project/thread navigation. The cross-machine writes, schema migration, broad runtime filtering changes, new drag-and-drop settings workflow, and unconditional Projects navigation warrant human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds project pinning and archiving across shared contracts, server persistence, and web and mobile interfaces. Pinned projects are ordered in project lists. Archived projects and their threads are excluded from relevant pickers and navigation.

Changes

Project organization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Organization contracts and shared grouping
packages/contracts/src/*, packages/client-runtime/src/state/projectOrganization.ts, packages/client-runtime/package.json
Project contracts add pin and archive fields. Shared utilities resolve organization state across project-group members, sort pinned projects, plan pin ordering, and organize project records.
Server update and persistence path
packages/client-runtime/src/operations/commands.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/*, apps/server/src/persistence/*, apps/server/src/project/*, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/project/tools.ts
Project updates carry pin and archive fields through server commands into project storage. Migration 57 adds missing columns. Pin/archive-only updates preserve updatedAt; tests cover planning and persistence.
Group actions and project settings
apps/web/src/hooks/useProjectGroupActions.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectSettingsPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectsList.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectsSettings.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsProjectOverviewRouteScreen.tsx
Group actions update project records sequentially across environments. Settings add pin and archive controls. The web Projects view adds search, active and archived views, and pinned-project reordering.
Web project and thread discovery
apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/web/src/components/Sidebar*, apps/web/src/components/LegacySidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/DraftHeroHeadline.tsx, apps/web/src/sidebarProjectGrouping.ts, apps/web/src/routes/*, apps/web/src/components/settings/*, docs/user/project-settings.md
Web pickers and navigation exclude archived projects and related threads, and place pinned projects first. The command palette adds project settings and pin actions. Scheduled-task choices and settings navigation also change.
Mobile project and thread flows
apps/mobile/src/features/home/*, apps/mobile/src/features/keyboard/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsScheduledTasksRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/*
Mobile scopes resolve organization data across environments. Home and sidebar lists filter archived projects and threads, and project pickers and task forms use organized records.

- The new-thread heading no longer shows an empty picker when every
  project is archived.
- A dropped pinned order holds until the server's order changes, and the
next drag waits for it; search no longer drops the hold.
- Pin, archive, Undo and reorder writes to one project run one at a time,
and their controls stay disabled until the last one finishes.
- Mobile hides pending tasks of archived projects and never auto-selects
an archived project for a new task.

Pin, archive and reorder writes to one project from the sidebar, palette
and settings now run one at a time, and a failed earlier write no longer
lets a queued one start early.

Each pin takes its slot at click time, after the last slot handed out, so
pinning two projects before the list updates no longer gives them the
same slot.

Thanks for this. It's the archive I want, since nothing gets deleted. Two small asks, with more detail in #16166:

  1. Typing an archived project's exact name in the command palette or project picker should still find it, marked as archived.
  2. A "show archived" toggle in the sidebar project filter and palette search.

Instead of putting the reordering UI in the settings page, could it just use the UI in the sidebar to drag and drop, as well as right-click menu to pin?

I implemented a version of this myself but was closed previously #13737

Consider this UI and maybe pick it up here.
