feat(i18n): add a shared i18n foundation and translate the welcome wizard - #16087
xianhongtao wants to merge 12 commits into
Conversation
Adds a client-only `languagePreference` field ("system" | "en" | "zh"),
defaulting to `system` so existing installs keep following the host locale.
The value lives with the client rather than the server: two clients viewing
one environment may want different languages, and the server never renders
UI. `withDecodingDefault` keeps settings written before the field existed
readable, so no migration is needed.
Introduces the framework-agnostic half of the i18n foundation in packages/client-runtime: an `en` source catalog, a partial `zh` catalog, a narrow language-negotiation helper, and a factory that returns a configured i18next instance. The package deliberately keeps no React dependency, so each client registers its own `initReactI18next`. Plugins are registered before `init` because i18next only runs a plugin's own init hook while the instance is initializing; registering `initReactI18next` afterwards silently leaves `react-i18next` on an unregistered instance. `initAsync: false` lets `t()` work on the very first render: the default defers initialization to a timer, which would flash raw keys. Catalogs are bundled rather than fetched, so `zh` falls back to `en` per key and an untranslated surface reads as English instead of as a message id. A test pins the two halves together: the preference schema and the shipped catalogs live in different packages, so nothing else catches a language that can be selected but has no catalog, or a catalog nobody can select.
Binds the shared foundation to the web client and gives it a first consumer: the welcome wizard, whose ~70 messages now come from the catalog. `en` values are byte-identical to the literals they replace, so the existing wizard test passes with no assertion changes. That test is the evidence the migration is behavior-preserving. Language resolution sits in AppRoot, above the router, rather than inside __root: that route returns separate trees for pair/connect, welcome, and the app shell, and a branch that forgot the sync would render in the source language. The wizard did exactly that while the sync lived in the app-shell branch only. A test asserts the placement so it cannot regress. Product names and shell commands stay untranslated on purpose: a client must not rename another product or rewrite a command it tells the user to run. Two counts in one sentence are composed from two messages plus a separator message, because i18next pluralizes a single `count` per message and the separator is punctuation, not whitespace: Chinese needs its own full stop.
Binds the shared foundation to the native client and exposes the same language choice the web client offers, so a preference set on one device can be reproduced on another. The device locale is read from `Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions()` rather than a new dependency: Hermes provides it, and an existing call site already relies on it. It is coarser than `expo-localization.getLocales()`, so per-region matching would need that package later. Preferences are a lenient optional-field blob, so the new key needs no storage migration.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces a cross-client i18n foundation, new language settings, bundled catalogs, and translated welcome-wizard behavior. It also changes the default interface language from the prior English-only behavior to automatic browser/device locale selection, making human review necessary. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |
The row spread `searchableSetting("language")`, whose English title comes
from the settings search index. Its description and value were already
translated, so the row rendered with an English label sitting above Chinese
text — it read as a half-finished translation rather than a translated row.
The catalog already carried `settings.language.title` for the select's
aria-label; the visible title now uses it too. Other rows keep their English
search-index titles, because they are not migrated in this PR.

Localize the language reset tooltip and accessible name.
SettingResetButton builds its accessible name in English and defaults its tooltip to English. In Chinese mode, both strings stay English while the new row’s title, description, and selector are translated. Pass localized text for both strings.

Replace the source-text placement test with a route-behavior test.
apps/web/src/i18n.test.ts:37-43 mirrors the implementation and can fail on a rename or comment change. This violates AGENTS.md, which requires tests for meaningful logic or observable behavior.
Do not assert translated UI in the application-shell branch. The Chinese catalog currently translates only the welcome wizard, so that branch has no suitable translated text. A root-route LanguageSync mount would also produce the same UI in both branches, so translated text cannot prove the exact mount level.
Test the observable behavior across /welcome and application-shell transitions instead. Change the language preference while navigating between those routes, and assert the known Chinese wizard text whenever /welcome is active. Use document.documentElement.lang only as a secondary synchronization assertion.

Thank you so much for putting together this shared i18n foundation! There is massive demand and enthusiasm for T3 Code across the developer and "vibe coding" community in China. Having this minimal, clean foundation landed upstream will be a huge milestone, and our community is fully ready to help maintain and test the Chinese translation catalogs. Really appreciate your work! 🚀 |

Thanks for carrying this. I read the foundation and the wizard migration at c6732f6fec; notes are inline, most important first.
Separately, the wizard still has a few literals that never got wired to the catalog, so a zh user sees mixed English/Chinese. Four of them already have keys (wizard.connection.connectAnotherChatGpt, wizard.retry, wizard.close, wizard.computer); the "cannot control terminals" notice arrived with the latest main merge and needs a new key. Those lines are outside the diff, so I can't attach suggestions. Here is the patch against c6732f6fec instead (git apply):

This effect runs before client settings hydrate, and the pre-hydration snapshot is the schema default (system). So with a zh browser and an explicit en preference, every launch renders English (module load), flips to Chinese (first effect, system), then flips back to English once settings load. The reverse case flashes English first.
Gating on useClientSettingsHydrated() would avoid the wrong intermediate language.

This is a closed literal set, and withDecodingDefault only covers a missing field, not an unknown value. Once a later PR adds, say, ja and a user selects it, opening the same stored settings in an older build (a downgrade, a lagging fork, an older desktop) fails to decode ClientSettingsSchema as a whole, so every client setting falls back to defaults rather than just the language.
Since more locales are the stated plan, it seems worth decoding an unrecognised value to system here.

Web passes the whole navigator.languages list, mobile passes a single locale. With a device order of [日本語, 中文, English], web resolves to zh and mobile falls back to en. Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().locale is also the formatting locale, which can differ from the UI language when language and region settings disagree.

WizardSteps (ui/wizard.tsx) uses each step string as its React key and builds aria-label={${step}, step ${index + 1}} under a hard-coded aria-label="Setup progress". With translated names passed in, a screen reader gets "连接, step 1", the three steps remount on every language change, and two steps that translate to the same word would collide on key.
WizardSteps is shared with five other wizards, so I did not touch it in the patch above. Keying by index or a stable id would at least fix the remount.

This reads AppRoot.tsx and __root.tsx as raw source and asserts on substrings. LanguagePreference and the supported languages are hand-written both here and in @t3tools/contracts, kept in sync by a test, and adding a language means editing three places. client-runtime already depends on contracts, so this could derive from LanguagePreference.literals, with Schema.is(LanguagePreference) replacing the hand-written guards.

t is untyped here, so the exported MessageKey never constrains a call site. t("wizard.projects.selectALL") typechecks and shows the raw key at runtime. Declaring i18next's CustomTypeOptions, or narrowing the parameter to MessageKey, would have caught the unused keys as well.

wizard.run has no call site in either client (same in messages.zh.ts).
`withDecodingDefault` covers a missing field, not a value this build does not know. Once a locale like `ja` becomes selectable, an older client that opens that saved document fails to decode the whole struct, so every client setting falls back to its default instead of just the language. Decode an unrecognized language to `system` at the field. The update schema stays strict, so a client still cannot write a language it cannot render.
A reader who picked 中文 still got "Reset language to default" in English, and the wizard step list read "连接, step 1", because the reset button built its accessible name from English words and WizardSteps hard-coded its labels. Type `t` against the English catalog, which also caught `wizard.connection.signIn` — a key that never existed and shipped the raw id. Derive the supported languages from the contracts schema so the list cannot drift from the preference, and let WizardSteps take translated labels while keying its steps by position, so a language change no longer remounts them or collides two steps that translate to the same word. Replace the AppRoot source-substring test with one that drives the real welcome wizard across a route change and a preference change.
Nothing on mobile called `useTranslate`, so picking 中文 saved a preference that left every screen — including the Language screen itself — in English. Translate the language screen and its settings row, and read the device's full locale list through expo-localization instead of one formatting locale, so a device ordered [ja, zh, en] resolves to zh the way web already does. Wait for the stored preference to load before applying anything, and re-read locales on foregrounding only while following the system.

Note Written by Hi! We are cleaning up open PRs, and this one does not say which model or harness was used to create it. If this change is really important, we recommend rebuilding the PR with a newer model and noting the model and harness in the PR description. |

Thanks for the update. I want to clarify that the PR description already explicitly includes the model and harness used:
This is also a fresh, smaller rebuild of #14215 against the V2 codebase, following the maintainer's request to open a new PR rather than rebase the original. The review feedback on this PR has been concrete and useful, and I'm willing to address actionable issues in the implementation. Could you clarify whether a community-maintained i18n foundation is still something the project is willing to accept? If so, what specific changes or acceptance criteria would be required to reconsider this PR? If the concern is the particular model version or the resulting code quality, please specify what is missing or needs correction. Rebuilding the same contribution yet again solely because the model/harness information was thought to be absent would not address a technical issue. I'd appreciate a clear direction before investing in another rewrite. Thank you. |
Problem
T3 Code renders every user-facing string as a literal in JSX or a template
inside a component. There is no place to translate or review copy, so the
product can only ever be displayed in English.
A previous localization request, #1463, was closed because maintainers did not
have the capacity to take on i18n. This PR is the community offering to
carry that work instead. It adds the foundation and the first translated
surface, and it establishes the pattern that further contributions follow, so
maintainers are not asked to translate or maintain catalogs.
This PR marks the point where community-maintained i18n can begin — it is
the starting point, not the finished localization. Additional screens and
locales are expected to arrive afterwards as separate, individually
reviewable PRs.
This is the foundation-first slice of the localization requested in
discussion #6789, and
a rebuild of
#14215 on current
main.#14215 was closed on 2026-10-02 as part of the orchestrator V2 transition,
which asked for fresh PRs against the new base rather than a rebase. That
attempt spanned 476 files and exceeded the review-cost limit before it could
be reviewed. This PR is deliberately the opposite: the foundation, one
persisted preference, and one fully migrated surface, so the pattern can
be reviewed end to end and extended afterwards.
Change
Shared foundation —
packages/client-runtime/src/i18n, with no Reactdependency so web, desktop, and mobile share one implementation:
ensource catalog, a partialzhcatalog, language negotiation, and afactory returning a configured i18next instance;
initAsync: falsesot()works on the first render instead of flashingmessage ids; catalogs are bundled, so nothing is fetched;
fallbackLng: "en"means a partial catalog degrades to English per key.Contract — client-only
languagePreference(system | en | zh) onClientSettingsSchema, defaulting tosystem.withDecodingDefaultkeepssettings written before the field existed readable, so no migration is needed.
Clients — web and desktop bind through
apps/web/src/i18n.ts; mobilethrough
apps/mobile/src/i18n.ts. Each exposes the same language picker, sothe cross-client goal raised in #6789 is retained rather than deferred.
First consumer — the welcome wizard (~75 messages under
wizard.*).envalues are byte-identical to the literals they replace, so the existingwizard test passes with no assertion changes; that test is the evidence
this migration is behavior-preserving.
Language resolution sits in
AppRoot, above the router, because__rootreturns separate trees for
/pair,/welcome, and the app shell. While itlived in the app-shell branch only, the wizard rendered in English while
Settings rendered in Chinese. A test asserts the placement.
Not translated on purpose: product names (
Codex,Claude Code,T3 Connect) and shell commands (npx t3 pair). A client must not renameanother product or rewrite a command it tells the user to run.
Scope and approval
Rebuild requested in
#14215 (comment):
This PR does exactly that.
Cross-client scope follows
discussion #6789 (comment),
which asked to "retain that cross-client goal alongside the initial
web/desktop localization work". Web, desktop, and mobile are all wired.
Scope is intentionally one surface. The previous attempt migrated the
whole app and could not be reviewed. This one establishes the foundation and
proves it on a single screen; further screens are follow-ups that can be
reviewed independently.
Ongoing maintenance. This PR is the starting point rather than the
finished localization, and it is meant to be the first of several. Follow-up
PRs will translate further screens and add locales, each reviewed on its own.
Contributors do the translating and keep catalogs in step; maintainers are
asked to review the foundation once, not to own the copy. The two pieces that
make that sustainable — a missing-key CI check and a written translation
workflow — are deliberately held back until bulk migration begins, so they can
be calibrated against real volume rather than a single screen.
Verification
Focused commands and observed results:
Behavior-preserving migration.
WelcomeWizard.test.tsxasserts the exactEnglish strings (
Continue,Import 1 project,Imported 28 threads. 1 thread could not be imported.). All 7 cases pass unmodified, which is whatshows the catalog round-trips to the previous output.
Regression test for a defect found while building this. The
LanguageSyncplacement described above is asserted directly, and the testwas confirmed to fail when the sync is removed from
AppRoot— it is not avacuous check.
Manual checks — Firefox against an isolated dev server using workspace-local
.t3state (never the developer's real~/.t3):/welcomerenders Chinese once the preference resolves tozh;document.documentElement.langfollows the resolved language;Could not check:
apps/marketingtypecheck fails in this environmentbecause Astro's telemetry cannot
mkdir $HOME/.config/astrounder a read-only$HOME.ASTRO_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1makes the full run exit 0 with all 15workspaces green; the failure does not reproduce on a writable home.
Not included: a missing-key CI check and a written translation workflow,
for the reason given under Scope and approval.
