perf(provider-core): select subagent results without sorting history - #29921
subagentResultForRun filters and sorts entire histories to select one assistant turn item, message, and optional error. It discards the rest of those sorted orders, retaining O(I + M) temporary selection arrays along the way.
Solution
Scan turn items and messages while retaining the selected candidates. Preserve the highest ordinal, first-on-tie behavior, linked-message preference, timestamp/creation fallback, run/role filtering, and failed-run error priority. Stop immediately at the first eligible linked message.
For I turn items, M messages and B inspected text, worst-case selection time changes from O(I log I + M log M + B) to O(I + M + B). Candidate-reference bookkeeping is O(1), removing the O(I + M) selection arrays. Existing text-trim storage and required returned text are unchanged; this is not a claim of text-independent O(1) total space or whole-app latency.
Verification: extended the existing behavior test before implementation, including ordinal-vs-timestamp selection, fallback timestamps, stable ties, blanks and unrelated runs. All 11 owning cases pass. Eight explicit fixtures and 10,000 seeded differential cases preserve exact returned text/IDs and input immutability, including duplicate IDs and failure precedence. vp run check:changed passes (12 selected tests, affected typechecks). A reviewer found unnecessary ranking after a linked match; fixed, revalidated, and a fresh independent three-reviewer Codex batch is clean.
Duplicate check: indexed 2,847 open PRs across all authors and checked related diffs. #29906 changes title clipping, #29248 model metadata, #27753 model-substitution reporting, and #23300 promoted-result ownership—not selection sorting. This preserves the result-order semantics introduced by #19058 and does not duplicate those changes.
Scope and approval: Submitted under CONTRIBUTING.md's very small, focused fix for an obvious bug exception. The defect is full-history filtering/sorting solely to select one existing result; the fix replaces that local selection algorithm without changing result priority, returned IDs, contracts or product behavior. There is no new feature, setting, workflow or default, and no prior maintainer approval is claimed. Maintainers retain the decision on whether the exception applies.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Replaces history sorting with linear scans when selecting subagent results, preserving existing selection priorities and fallbacks. The change is confined to result selection and introduces no new operational or data-access behavior.
You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.
The subagent result selection logic now scans turn items and messages to choose assistant output. Tests cover turn-item ordering, timestamp fallback, timestamp ties, and excluded candidates.

Summary
Select and validate subagent results packages/provider-core/src/server/subagentProjection.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/SubagentProjection.test.ts
subagentResultForRun selects the highest-ordinal nonblank assistant turn item, or falls back to assistant messages ordered by timestamps. For failed runs, the selected error item takes precedence in the result text. Tests cover ordering, ties, blank text, and messages from another run.
No blocking behavior failure was identified. Additional tests would protect turn-item selection from regressions.

Add ineligible turn-item distractors for the run and blank-text filters.
The ordering test does not contain any ineligible assistant turn item. Removing either turn-item filter leaves every case passing. In the turn-item order case, add an other-run turn item and a blank turn item with higher ordinals. Without the run check, the other-run item is selected and the fallback returns Starting step 0.. Without the text check, the blank item is selected and the same fallback occurs. Either regression then fails the text assertion.

Add coverage for equal highest turn-item ordinals.
The selector must retain the first assistant turn item when eligible items share the highest ordinal. Add this case to the existing table so a > to >= regression fails. The expected text, message ID, and turn-item ID must all identify progress.

Reviewed both test-coverage nitpicks. They accurately describe the narrower repository test table, but neither establishes a production defect or an unverified selection rule in this PR.
Other-run and blank turn items: the unchanged, pre-implementation differential verifier already generates both kinds of turn-item distractor and compares the exact returned text and IDs with the original function. Removing the turn-item run filter makes that verifier fail; separately removing the nonblank-text filter also makes it fail.
Equal highest ordinals: the prewritten explicit fixture already includes two eligible assistant items with the same highest ordinal and asserts the first item's IDs. Changing the selection from > to >= makes that fixture fail.
I ran those three mutations only on disposable source copies outside the checkout, using the existing verifier without adding or changing any assertions. All three are caught; the unmodified head still passes all eight explicit fixtures and 10,000 differential cases. The 11 repository cases also pass again. Reproducible mutation runner and results are added to the existing evidence gist; its original verifier is unchanged.
Adding the same cases to the CI table would be reasonable optional durable coverage, but it would duplicate verification already performed here. I am not adding post-implementation unit tests, in accordance with this task's tests-first constraint. No production change is needed. These suggestions are in the review body, with no inline review threads to mark resolved; this comment records the disposition of both.
The ast-grep warning concerns CodeRabbit's bundled HTML rule configuration. This PR changes no HTML rule or HTML source, so there is no corresponding repository fix.
