fix(opencode): explain temporary model capacity failures - #26801
OpenCode Go's [ttft_admission_refused] capacity errors appear as "Usage limit reached." Recorded evidence.
Change
Use one shared presentation rule for the known OpenCode rate-limit signature. New and legacy failures say "Provider at capacity" across server titles and web/desktop/mobile displays. Retain the provider's explanation and any reported reset time.
Failure classification, retry/reset data, recovery controls, genuine quota handling, and recovered retries keep their behavior. Related Codex wording is handled separately in #26532.
Scope and approval
Focused correction of an inaccurate error explanation, under CONTRIBUTING.md's obvious-bug exception. No new recovery workflow or contract change.
Verification
147 tests passed across six affected test files, including OpenCode protocol replay, legacy titles, quota controls, and recovery with/without a reset time. Regressions failed before the fix.
Shared, provider-core, mobile, and desktop typechecks passed. Format, lint, both knip passes, and GraphQL validation passed.
Full vp run check:changed timed out twice; broader server typechecking remains incomplete. Final tests excluded browser/render projects.
Actual-client verification and required before/after screenshots are missing because this session's browser restrictions prevent the repository's verification workflow.

Explanation
The title "fix(opencode): explain temporary model capacity failures" matches the main change. The PR maps the known OpenCode [ttft_admission_refused] rate-limit signature to a "Provider at capacity" presentation instead of "Usage limit reached." The title names the OpenCode scope, the fix type, and the capacity-failure subject. It is specific and follows conventional commit form.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives the issue and evidence link. The Change section explains the shared presentation rule and what stays unchanged. Scope cites the obvious-bug exception. Verification lists the test, typecheck, and lint results, and it states what was not checked. The description omits the template's model/harness attribution line, although it does say "Written with GPT-6 Luna; reviewed and integrated by GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex in T3 Code," which may satisfy it. Required before/after screenshots for UI changes are missing. The author states this openly and gives a reason. The description also cites a CONTRIBUTING.md exception that the reviewer must verify. Overall the description is mostly complete, so the check passes, but the missing screenshots and the unverified exception claim should be raised with the author.

@satyalyadav, your narrow admission-refusal match and shared presentation rule preserve the original failure classification and recovery controls. i kept all three contributor commits, merged current main, simplified the duplicate web/mobile transcript branches, and added explicit stored-title and banner-title assertions in the existing tests.
i reproduced the retry-title regression on main before applying the fix: 1 failure, 43 passes. all 149 focused tests then passed, including 84 OpenCode protocol replays and web/mobile recovery cases. vp run check:changed --concurrency 1 passed through Blacksmith, including 255 tests in 13 files, typechecks for 31 affected packages, lint, formatting, knip, 13 compiler checks and browser tests. two independent read-only reviews approved 71b5322eb0054c2f0a6bfa73b58daf29205d5454 without findings. the automatic review identified older OpenCode failures with code APIError; i confirmed the legacy adapter mapping, reproduced a failing shared test, and added that code to the same class-and-marker guard. all 101 focused follow-up tests passed, including the legacy adapter tests.
real Google Chrome client verification used the same persisted admission refusal with the legacy "Usage limit reached" title on main and this head. the timeline and recovery banner now say "Provider at capacity"; the details control exposes the retained provider explanation. i also inspected the narrow dark layout. i also repeated this client check on the final head with the legacy APIError code and opened its details successfully. this checks the existing-thread client path; no live upstream capacity refusal was induced. native mobile and the Electron shell were not exercised; their affected code passed typechecks and relevant existing tests.
before, main:
after, the same persisted failure:
ci on this head is blocked by three unrelated regressions in newer main: undefined fakeProvider in PullRequestService.test.ts:2207,2244 (from https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/24392), undefined encodeScanCache in usageScanCache.test.ts:254, and the disallowed issue-number comment in ClaudeAdapterV2.ts:4219. these cause Build and Typecheck, Test Server 4, Test Server 6, Lint, and the aggregate Check to fail. all three files are byte-for-byte identical between the tested merge 9a2b09264ba95b0d232ea06abeabad4df8c6d0b1 and its main parent; this takeover leaves them untouched. build log, lint log.
final status: 23 checks passed, 5 failed, none pending. the automatic follow-up reviewed 71b5322eb0054c2f0a6bfa73b58daf29205d5454 with no actionable findings and no merge-blocking risk identified. both independent reviewers approved that exact head. waiting on the unrelated main regressions above.

Allow the legacy OpenCode error code for admission refusals.
The legacy adapter maps an HTTP 429 APIError to class: "usage_limit" and code: "APIError", while preserving [ttft_admission_refused] in the message. The shared predicate rejects that failure because it only accepts provider.rate-limit, so the default title remains “Usage limit reached” instead of “Provider at capacity.”
Accept APIError for this marker as well. Genuine quota failures remain unchanged because they do not contain the admission-refusal marker.

partial verification of exact head ace1b8abd3de3a5cdceba06e9e2072a57d494fa4; no source changes or pushes.
i installed and ran github/main (947916887c) in /home/user/main, stopped it, then installed and ran this head with an explicit isolated home. only one dev server ran at a time. playwright from the repo drove /usr/bin/google-chrome. i created the project and threads through the app against a real git repository, with no seeded failures, mocks, fixtures, or demo data.
real codex gpt-6.1-sol and opencode opencode/big-pickle turns completed on both versions. responses were visible after reload. on this head, selecting the incident's opencode-go/deepseek-v4.1-flash produced a real model-not-found error. its timeline retained the explanation under "Provider error", without calling it a capacity failure. switching that thread to big pickle completed a turn and retained the earlier error; a fresh big pickle thread also completed normally.
sanitized native codex protocol transcript, observed on both versions:
blacksmith ran the six existing affected test files: shared error presentation, provider failure records, opencode adapter, web session logic, web recovery banner, and mobile recovery card. all 150 tests passed. github reports no failing or pending checks on this head. this is supporting coverage, not proof of a live capacity refusal.
matching codex smoke scenarios on main and the pr, respectively. these images do not show the capacity change:
Not verified
the changed capacity behavior remains unverified. i could not reproduce [ttft_admission_refused] on main or this head. opencode auth list reports zero stored credentials; this vm has no opencode go account, and the incident model is unavailable. no real capacity failure, genuine quota failure, reset scheduling, recovered capacity retry, legacy capacity display, or capacity notification was exercised. synthetic tests do not close this gap.
live response display was stale until reload/navigation on both versions. the error-to-big-pickle follow-up returned the first prompt's requested text instead of the follow-up's requested text; i am not claiming correct recovery prompt semantics or attributing that finding to this presentation diff.
native ios/android, the electron shell, macos/windows, remote/relay/tunnel modes, and other providers were not exercised on this linux vm. outcome: capacity verification blocked, not verified as ready to merge.
Thanks, Maria. We recovered the original response from OpenCode's native records: HTTP 429, error.type: server_error, with [ttft_admission_refused]. T3 displayed it as "Usage limit reached."
Our latest retests succeed but never encounter that response, so they don't exercise the changed behavior. This PR corrects the error explanation while preserving recovery behavior.
Would replaying the captured response, alongside the regression tests, be sufficient verification for this presentation fix?
