Problem

Clicking an image inside an html_render page opens the image viewer with that image alone, so comparing a block of screenshots means closing the dialog and reopening it once per image. Closes #25574.

Change

The injected page script now posts the whole image block: the nearest ancestor holding more than one <img>, in document order, capped at 24, skipping images without a URL, inside a[href]/button, smaller than 8×8 px or already collected. It falls back to the clicked image. readHtmlRenderImageRequest returns { images, index } and still accepts the legacy single-image payload, so renders published before this change keep working.

In the viewer, ←/→ and h/l walk the block (reusing the existing zoom-pan check), a N / M chip shows the position, and a thumbnail filmstrip is pinned to the bottom of the dialog: active thumbnail marked by brightness, click jumps directly, aria-current, active thumbnail scrolled into view. ZoomableImage gains an optional reservedHeight so the media area shrinks when the strip is shown.

Scope and approval

A very small, focused fix of an obvious defect: the viewer and its { images, index } contract already exist (#20036), and the iframe bridge was discarding every image but the clicked one. No new product capability is introduced — the same block simply reaches the existing viewer — and single-image previews are unchanged. Issue: #25574.

Verification

  • ./node_modules/.bin/vp test run packages/shared/src/htmlRender.test.ts — 14 passed: block shape, index clamping, legacy single-image payload, rejection of empty/oversized/unsafe blocks.
  • ./node_modules/.bin/vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives on the five touched files — no findings.
  • ./node_modules/.bin/vp fmt --check on them — clean.
  • ./node_modules/.bin/vp run --filter @t3tools/web typecheck — exit 0.
  • Manual check in the dev app: published an html_render with three sibling images, clicked the second → the viewer opened at 2 / 3; ←/→ and h/l walk the block with wrap-around; clicking a thumbnail jumps to that image and aria-current follows; a single-image render still opens with no arrows and no filmstrip.

🟡 Medium chat/ExpandedImageDialog.tsx:342

HEIC/TIFF filmstrip thumbnails remain broken even when the main viewer displays those attachments, because this raw <img> bypasses AttachmentImage's decode-on-error fallback. Render AttachmentImage here with thumbnail.name and thumbnail.mimeType as well.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces a cross-component image-gallery workflow for html_render, including iframe-side image grouping, a new message shape, filmstrip UI, and navigation behavior. It also adds a lint-suppression directive and leaves a documented HEIC/TIFF thumbnail compatibility risk, so the production behavior merits human review.

Walkthrough

HTML-render image clicks now send groups of up to 24 images with a selected index. The expanded image dialog displays the group with thumbnail and keyboard navigation. The request parser also accepts the previous single-image payload.

Changes: HTML image gallery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Image-group payload and collection
packages/shared/src/htmlRender.ts, packages/shared/src/htmlRender.test.ts
The request parser supports legacy single-image payloads and validated groups of up to 24 images. The injected bootstrap collects eligible images, and tests cover payload parsing and validation.
Iframe bridge integration
apps/web/src/components/files/BrowserDocumentFrame.tsx
The image request handler passes the image group and selected index to the expanded image preview.
Gallery display and navigation
apps/web/src/components/chat/ExpandedImageDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ZoomableImage.tsx
The dialog displays thumbnails and the selected position, supports keyboard and button navigation, and scrolls the active thumbnail into view. ZoomableImage accepts configurable reserved height.

Explanation

Issue [#25574] requires an html_render image block to open in the viewer and support navigation without closing the dialog. The reviewed changes collect eligible sibling images, send { images, index }, preserve the legacy single-image payload, and pass the request to ExpandedImageDialog. The dialog supports arrow keys, h/l, previous/next controls, position feedback, and thumbnail selection. The shared tests cover block validation, index handling, and legacy payloads.

Guard letter navigation against modifier keys.

When a browser dispatches a modifier-letter event to the open dialog, h and l match gallery navigation. The handler then calls preventDefault() and stopPropagation(). Ctrl+L may be reserved by the browser, but that does not prevent other modifier-letter chords from reaching the popup.

Guard only the letter branches. Keep arrow-key navigation unchanged.

Proposed fix
     const key = event.key.length === 1 ? event.key.toLowerCase() : event.key;
+    const letterNavigation = !event.metaKey && !event.ctrlKey && !event.altKey;
...
-    if (key === "ArrowLeft" || key === "h") {
+    if (key === "ArrowLeft" || (letterNavigation && key === "h")) {
...
-    if (key !== "ArrowRight" && key !== "l") return;
+    if (key !== "ArrowRight" && !(letterNavigation && key === "l")) return;

Use the format-aware renderer for filmstrip thumbnails.

A multi-image preview can contain a HEIC image imported through useComposerContextImport. The main view passes its name and MIME type to AttachmentImage, which decodes HEIC and TIFF files after the native image load fails. The filmstrip bypasses that path and uses a raw <img>, so the main image can display while its thumbnail is blank or broken.

Suggested fix
+import { AttachmentImage } from "../media/AttachmentImage";

Retain the clicked eligible image in the capped block.

For a regular trusted click on the 25th qualifying image, the collector stops after 24 images. For a later image with a duplicate URL, URL deduplication skips the clicked element. In both cases, out.indexOf(el) is negative, so the handler sends only [el] with index 0. The viewer therefore cannot browse the block.

Keep the existing eligibility filters, but apply the cap as a window that includes the clicked eligible image:

Add focused coverage for a 25th qualifying image and a later duplicate URL.

Update t3ImageBlock in HTML_RENDER_IMAGE_BLOCK_SCRIPT to retain the clicked
eligible image when collecting beyond the block cap or when its URL duplicates
an earlier image; preserve the existing eligibility filters and deduplicate
other images. After collection, return a capped window that includes the clicked
image when possible, and add focused coverage for a 25th qualifying image and a
later duplicate URL.

apps/web/src/components/chat/ExpandedImageDialog.tsx:130-149
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Allow gallery navigation at horizontal pan boundaries.

ExpandedImageDialog calls ZoomableImage.pan(key) before gallery navigation. pan returns true for horizontal overflow even when scrollLeft cannot change at the current boundary. This consumes ArrowLeft or ArrowRight, so users cannot navigate a grouped preview in that direction.

Return true only when horizontal panning changes scrollLeft.

Suggested fix
+        const previousScrollLeft = viewport.scrollLeft;
         switch (key) {
           case "ArrowLeft":
             viewport.scrollLeft -= 40;
             break;
@@
           default:
             return false;
         }
+        if (key === "ArrowLeft" || key === "ArrowRight")
+          return viewport.scrollLeft !== previousScrollLeft;
         return true;

Update ZoomableImage.pan so ArrowLeft and ArrowRight return true only when
scrollLeft changes; return false at horizontal pan boundaries so
ExpandedImageDialog can continue to gallery navigation. Preserve the existing
behavior for other pan keys.
