Problem

A failed ACP cancellation can leave a turn active, and a successful cancellation can leave a prompt that never acknowledges Stop. For every ACP flavor, finalize the interrupted turn after its bounded grace period and restart the runtime before admitting another turn. Antigravity opts into restart after Stop, and resume-preferring providers restart directly on the saved session without a throwaway session or duplicate resume request. Providers without resume support retain load activation after restart.

Change

Rebuilt from @EinMelih's #20709. This completes the three-layer replacement and adds recovery for the unacknowledged-cancel case missing from the original.

Scope and approval

Maintainer takeover of the existing bug fixes in #20709, following the takeover direction. This layer isolates one part of that scope; human approval remains required where noted.

Verification

  • Combined ACP/Antigravity suite: 126 → 131 tests across two existing files; all 131 pass.
  • Nine fail-before checks cover roots, nested paths, activation preference/directories, failed cancel, direct restart, resume deduplication, and unacknowledged cancel.
  • Current-head smoke: six regressions pass through actual ACP services and the mock agent process, ending with interrupted then completed turns.
  • Server/provider-acp typechecks, targeted lint/formatting pass. Compatibility: 84 pass; one unchanged-main process-wrapper test is unavailable on this NVM-only host without /usr/bin/node or /bin/node. Three inherited test lint warnings remain.

Three independent review rounds (Opus and Sol). Round one found a load-only restart fallback bug, fixed and covered. A later CodeRabbit finding exposed an unrelated dangling allowed root rejecting valid workspace requests; fixed by omitting independently unresolvable allowed roots while requested paths still fail closed. Round three is clean; the combined current-head suite passes 131/131.

Current-stack test evidence (head 378aee73d9; real service plus mock process, not a native-provider exercise).

Headless Linux only. Real Antigravity CLI/account behavior, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop are unverified. Human approval and native-provider verification remain required; this is not a claim of merge readiness.

Implementation: GPT-6.1 Sol (high), tests: GPT-6 Astra (high), Codex harness through T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes production ACP cancellation recovery by restarting runtimes, reactivating sessions, and altering the default Antigravity runtime policy. The changes are targeted and tested, but the provider-default behavior change has user-visible lifecycle impact.

📝 Walkthrough

The ACP adapter now marks runtimes for restart after cancellation failures or acknowledgement timeouts. Runtime restart applies the configured session-resume behavior. Tests cover recovery across resume-capable and load-only session support.

Changes: ACP interruption recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restart with the requested ACP session
packages/provider-acp/src/server/AcpSessionRuntime.ts, packages/provider-acp/src/server/adapter.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/AntigravityAdapterV2.ts
Runtime restart forwards a requested session ID when the flavor prefers resume and the runtime supports it. resumeSession skips a duplicate resume request for the session already started through resume. The Antigravity flavor enables runtime restart after an interrupt.
Recover after interrupted cancellation
packages/provider-acp/src/server/adapter.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/AcpAdapterV2.test.ts
Cancellation failure or completion timeout marks the runtime for restart. Tests check that a later turn runs on a second runtime and verify session requests for resume-capable and load-only agents.

Thanks for working on this! I tested head 378aee73d99a0cd6d3d15940fce489248aa49953 with my Google account on macOS arm64, official Antigravity ACP 1.3.0, and gemini-4-argon-high, using the background-server repro I posted in #14619.

This was an isolated runner using the head's actual Antigravity adapter/ACP services and official runtime, with a fresh profile. It wasn't a full T3 orchestration or desktop UI test. These checks ran on 2026-10-23 (UTC). I also reran the same scenario on the unmodified main snapshot from my earlier report, 6f75bcb374c0e19ff90e4f7c2d3949c58aba5f02, as a baseline.

The direct-resume change is visible: after the failed Stop, the replacement runtime successfully performs session/resume, without a throwaway session/new or session/load. However, I still couldn't get the same-session follow-up to finish in this live sample:

  • The tracked python3 -m http.server command remained running after SERVER STARTED. Stop took 15.0 seconds and returned ProviderAdapterInterruptError.
  • I removed the leftover server before retrying. The recovery session/prompt began at 11:22:29.575 UTC and streamed RECOVERED at 11:22:45.741, but had not returned by 11:23:23.933 (60 seconds from submission, about 54 seconds after RPC dispatch). A subsequent Stop ended it through the failure path.
  • A fresh-session CONTROL OK returned stopReason: end_turn in 3.8 seconds. The baseline also stalled after its session/load.

Separately, the server child survived Stop as PPID 1 in its own PGID. I'm keeping that observation separate from this PR's recovery scope. The three focused cancellation-recovery regression tests passed here too.

Hopefully this helps fill in the native macOS/account verification gap. This is one controlled live reproduction, not a claim about every cancellation path; I have the timestamped RPC/turn and PID evidence if useful.

Thanks again for working on the recovery/cleanup behavior!

Following up on my live verification, I narrowed down why this particular background-command session still fails to finish after a successful resume. This also relates to #14619. Thanks again for working on the recovery path.

The same failure reproduces with a small JSON-RPC client talking directly to the official Antigravity ACP runtime, without any T3 adapter or UI. A persisted RUN_COMMAND step stays RUNNING after the command process is gone. Resuming that session produces the requested answer, then STATE_WAITING_FOR_TASKS, with no prompt result within the observation window. Changing only that stale step's status to CANCELED in an isolated copy makes the follow-up finish normally.

These checks ran on 2026-10-24: macOS arm64, official ACP 1.3.0, personal Google account, gemini-4-argon-high, yolo mode. Both official executables were unmodified; I enabled their existing --debug logging and used fresh, isolated profiles with synthetic conversations. This is additional diagnosis of the sample, not a new desktop verification or a claim that this PR introduced the defect. The PR head is still 378aee73d99a0cd6d3d15940fce489248aa49953.

Direct ACP reproduction

  1. Initialize, authenticate, create a session, and select the model/mode. Reply with exactly: CONTROL BEFORE returns end_turn in 9.0 seconds.
  2. Ask: Start a local static file server in this repo with python3 -m http.server 18941 as a long-running background process. Do not wait for it to exit and do not stop it. Keep it tracked as a running command (do not use nohup, shell &, or detach it). Once it is listening, reply with exactly: SERVER STARTED.
  3. After the answer, the native harness sends STATE_WAITING_FOR_TASKS. Send session/cancel; native debug logging confirms Python sends haltRequest: true to the harness, but the prompt still has no result after 15 seconds.
  4. Terminate the isolated runtime and its recorded test server, then start a new runtime and session/resume the same session. Resume succeeds. Reply with exactly: RECOVERED produces that answer, followed by STATE_WAITING_FOR_TASKS; the prompt has not returned after 65 seconds. A fresh-session control subsequently returns end_turn in 19.3 seconds.

The recovered turn's completed answer and trajectory-state events carry the same trajectory ID. I did not observe a STATE_FULLY_IDLE event being lost or filtered as another agent's event.

Same-snapshot comparison

The database snapshot after cancellation has one RUN_COMMAND at index 4 with status RUNNING. The later user/answer steps are complete, but that old command remains running after the recovered answer.

I restored three independent copies of that exact snapshot, each in a fresh profile, then sent the same RECOVERED prompt:

Input snapshot Native state after the answer ACP prompt result
Unchanged STATE_WAITING_FOR_TASKS No result within 40 seconds
Only old command status changed to DONE STATE_FULLY_IDLE end_turn, 6.308 seconds
Only old command status changed to CANCELED STATE_FULLY_IDLE end_turn, 11.718 seconds

I compared every table before starting the three runtimes. Each modified copy differs only in that row's steps.status column and one byte encoding the same status in step_payload; all other fields are equal. The runtime's protobuf descriptors identify RUN_COMMAND=21, RUNNING=2, DONE=3, CANCELED=6, and Step.status as field 4. This was a causal experiment on copies, not a proposed production database repair.

The bundled Python code waits in receive_steps() for the harness to reach a terminal state; STATE_WAITING_FOR_TASKS does not release that wait. Waiting can be appropriate while a command is genuinely alive. The problematic case here is that the old command is already gone, while its persisted state still keeps a resumed session waiting. Treating every WAITING_FOR_TASKS as end_turn would not be a safe general fix.

This seems to explain why the PR's successful runtime restart and direct resume were insufficient for this sample: they restore the same stale native task state. I do not have the Go harness implementation to identify the exact faulty function. The evidence points toward task cancellation/reconciliation on native session restore, rather than another missing session/resume call in T3.

There were seven synthetic prompt requests in this investigation. All recorded test processes and copied credential profiles were removed. No existing conversations or installed T3/runtime files were changed. The 40/65-second limits are observation bounds; I am not claiming every hang has this cause. The compact evidence below includes only state events, durations, and database differences, with no raw debug logs or credentials.

Hopefully this gives a more actionable native-runtime reproduction and helps define the remaining recovery boundary. Investigation assisted by GPT-6 Astra through T3 Code's Codex harness; Gemini was the runtime/model under test.
