Problem

Usage → Limits can show 0% Codex allowance left even when the ChatGPT account still has spendable credits. T3 currently drops that balance from the Codex response.

Closes #17704.

Change

Show a small “ChatGPT credits” card below the Codex allowance cards in web/desktop and mobile, using the existing page styles. The value stays separate from plan percentages and earned reset credits. Missing balances, unlimited accounts and zero balances have distinct labels.

Carry the balance through the existing probe and live-update paths. Preserve it across window-only updates, honor explicit clears across environments, and discard old usage when an account changes. Account grouping follows the existing Usage identity rules. This only displays reported credit units; billing, spending, routing and reset behavior are unchanged.

Scope and approval

This implements the proposal in #17704. Maintainer approval of the feature direction is still pending. I am submitting the focused implementation and screenshots for consideration.

Verification

  • 91 focused tests pass across the Codex mapper, usage-update merging, managed-provider refresh, account aggregation and Usage page refresh. Five new regressions fail against the original mapper/update implementation; three account-switch/clear regressions fail before the review fixes.
  • Web and server typechecks, scoped lint, formatting and diff checks pass. Independent review approved 92a3f2be4.
  • In the isolated web app, Refresh changes the synthetic balance from 12,345.68 to 42 while the allowance stays at 0%. Checked light/dark themes and a 390px viewport.
  • Reused existing dependencies; no fresh frozen-lock install. Native device access is disabled in this environment, so the React Native view has not had a runtime check.

The screenshots use synthetic data. Before uses the upstream Usage component; after uses this change with the same fixture.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a new ChatGPT credit-balance capability across Codex parsing, live updates, shared account aggregation, and web/mobile Usage views. Because it changes shared runtime data flow and existing refresh behavior across multiple packages, the scope warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Codex credit data now passes through usage contracts, server mapping, and account aggregation. Web and mobile Usage Limits views show reported credit balances separately from plan allowance and reset credits.

Changes

Codex credit balance display

Layer / File(s) Summary
Credit contract and Codex mapping
packages/contracts/src/providerUsageLimits.ts, apps/server/src/provider/codexUsageLimits.ts, apps/server/src/provider/codexUsageLimits.test.ts
Usage limits and updates accept optional credit data. Codex mapping validates balances and emits credit-only updates for Codex snapshots. Tests cover mapping, omission, and clearing.
Usage state updates and probe identity
packages/provider-core/src/server/usageLimits.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/usageLimits.test.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/managedProvider.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/managedProvider.test.ts
Usage updates add, preserve, or clear credits. Full probes replace prior credits. Failed probes retain prior credits when authentication status, type, and normalized email match.
Account aggregation and balance labels
packages/shared/src/usageLimits.ts, packages/shared/src/usageLimits.test.ts
Account aggregation tracks credits separately from quota windows and applies explicit clears. Balance labels cover unlimited, numeric, unavailable, and exhausted states.
Web and mobile credit cards
apps/web/src/components/usage/UsageLimitsPooled.tsx, apps/web/src/components/usage/UsagePage.refresh.test.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/usage/UsageLimitsPooled.tsx
Codex account cards display formatted balances and identify accounts when multiple accounts are present. The web refresh test checks balance updates and removal.

No actionable issue remains established in this review. The credit-balance display is mergeable after normal checks and feature approval.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e0f3e

The balances remain informational and do not grant spending or execution authority. Account-switch safeguards limit ordinary cross-account carryover. A shared aggregation edge case can hide previously reported quota windows, and refresh ordering can restore stale balance displays. Prior-session update cleanup was not fully established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: A newer credit-only snapshot for a matching account can replace quota windows reported by another environment. The PR admits snapshots with credits and empty windows into aggregation, but quota selection still copies the freshest snapshot wholesale; only credits receive independent reconciliation afterward. This couples balance reporting to quota-state ownership and can remove allowance information from both pooled views. The explicit-null clear path avoids this replacement, so its regression coverage does not address the credit-object case. The demonstrated scope is presentation, not quota enforcement.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added exposure is account-associated balance metadata published through existing provider usage state and displayed across connected environments. The inspected changes introduce no spending command, credential transfer, or additional execution authority. Cross-account exposure through stale session callbacks remains unproven.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider-reported balances are trimmed and included only when they are finite nonnegative decimal strings. Non-Codex limit buckets are rejected for live updates. Both views render a formatted label rather than interpreting the supplied balance as markup or an action.
  • observed — Authentication access creates tracked child scopes and rejects new access while credentials are changing. Credential adoption closes owned sessions before updating credentials, and sign-in closes sessions before authentication. These are strong countercontrols to stale-session writes. The exact registry wrapper and notification-client cleanup chain were not fully verified, so callback isolation across every account transition remains a coverage gap rather than an established vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Sparse live updates preserve omitted balances and quota windows, explicit null clears balances, and equivalent updates reuse the existing snapshot. Failed probes preserve last-good usage only after the managed refresh applies its account-identity checks.

Merged current main in e0f3e51a, preserving its workspace account grouping. Credit balances stay separate for the same email in different workspaces, clear when account identity is lost, and still honor explicit clears. All 100 focused tests, web/server typechecks and scoped lint/formatting pass. Hosted checks and feature approval remain pending.

Builds on the credit balance from upstream PR pingdotgg#17705. Once the selected
account's window is used up and the account has credits, the limit notice says
that further turns spend them and how many are left. It shows even when no
other account can take over, since spending credits silently is the problem.
