Infrastructure: Implement native desktop-driver providers and real-platform integration #4257

Closed

Description

@JasonVMo

Goal

Implement and integrate real-platform native Desktop Driver providers for macOS, Windows Fabric, and Win32 Paper. Parent: #4275.

Status - 2026-10-01

Completed implementation milestone; remains closed. PR #4306 delivered this scope on September 3, 2026.

The September 3 completion comment explicitly superseded the older Appium/WinAppDriver draft and separated implementation from production release qualification. This body/title now reflects that decision. Remaining release criteria have their own open workstream sub-issue, #4345, rather than being hidden under this closed milestone.

Delivered

  • Source-built Swift macOS and shared C++ Windows/Win32 providers behind the Appium-independent, client-neutral W3C service.
  • Verified native build/cache selection, source/toolchain/artifact identity, helper handshakes, and explicit build-before-lifecycle CI setup.
  • Exact launch/attach ownership and nonce-bound app leases; attached apps are preserved and only recorded owned resources are stopped.
  • Cancellation, serialized physical input, owned-input recovery, normalized accessibility, and truthful unsupported-capability behavior.
  • ScreenCaptureKit macOS capture and Windows Graphics Capture window/element capture.
  • Real native Storybook integration on all three desktop endpoints, with retained diagnostics and explicit hosted capability skips.
  • Durable architecture, provider, protocol, trust-boundary, integration, and remaining-work documentation.

PRs #4313/#4314 subsequently added executable callbacks and native focus/modifier improvements. Current hosted jobs run native tests; that does not make their disabled capabilities authoritative release evidence.

Open qualification and bugs

#4345 owns the complete remaining V1 release gate in PLAN.md: authoritative input/TCC/DPI qualification, compatibility, security, cache, performance, reliability, package/external-consumer, and publishing work.

Related open items: #4349 (CI qualification), #4343 (accessibility), #4347 (regression parity), #4348 (capture), #4342 (all-skipped reporting), #4346 (native state projection), and #4344 (catalog crashes).

Closing or retaining this issue as closed does not claim every production-release gate is met.

    Completion update - 2026-09-03

    PR #4306 closed this issue by replacing the branch's Appium-backed proof path
    with source-built, Appium-independent macOS and Windows/Win32 native providers.
    The merge includes verified build/cache selection, exact launch/attach leases,
    cancellation and input recovery, normalized accessibility, native capture,
    Storybook integration on all three desktop endpoints, and explicit CI
    diagnostics and capability skips.

    The issue body's older Appium-, WinAppDriver-, DESIGN.md-, and
    NEXT-STEPS.md-specific acceptance text is superseded by the merged
    architecture. Closing this implementation milestone is not a claim that
    every production-release qualification is complete.

    Remaining authoritative input/TCC/DPI qualification, compatibility, security,
    cache, performance, reliability, external-consumer, and publishing work is
    recorded in packages/agentic/desktop-driver/PLAN.md and rolled up by #4275;
    the accessibility, pipeline, focus-parity, and Windows-capture portions remain
    open in #4255, #4256, #4254, and #4260 respectively.
