Infrastructure: Retire the legacy Windows Jest Storybook smoke harness #4254

Closed

Description

@JasonVMo

Goal

Select and execute the disposition of the legacy Windows Jest Storybook smoke harness. Parent: #4275.

Status - 2026-10-01

Completed delivery milestone: retired. PR #4294 removed the harness and its app-local integration. The original regression-parity preconditions are preserved as the separate open follow-up #4347; they are not claimed complete by this closure.

Delivered decision and mechanics

  • Decision: retire, implemented by the merged Infrastructure: land the public desktop driver #4294 change on August 31, 2026, and confirmed by the September 3 issue status update.
  • Removed apps/storybook/windows-tests, the Windows Jest configuration, related app-local lifecycle scripts, and Storybook's @react-native-windows/automation dependency.
  • Replaced the competing Storybook paths with the shared native Desktop Driver/Storybook CLI. PR Infrastructure: add native desktop driver providers #4306 made this replacement Appium-independent.
  • Documented the supported workflow and exact owned application/helper lifecycle.

The old Storybook WinAppDriver version/port-conflict requirements no longer apply. The separate FluentTester apps/E2E jobs are not part of this retirement.

Follow-up

#4347 owns replacement coverage for all ten original delayed focus-survival cases, the Button real-Tab movement case, and reconciliation of the old visibility/Callout status checks.

PRs #4313/#4314/#4320 add named WDIO focus and FocusZone cases, but current main does not contain the original ten-case, minimum-three-second post-activation survival cohort. Hosted pointer/keyboard skips do not satisfy regression parity.

#4344 tracks the native catalog exclusions that block ordinary Accordion/Callout traversal. #4349 owns authoritative CI qualification/promotion.

    Status update - 2026-09-03

Decision: Retire. PR #4294 removed apps/storybook/windows-tests, its Jest
configuration, app-local lifecycle scripts, and the
@react-native-windows/automation dependency. PR #4306 then made the
replacement path fully Appium-independent by adding source-built native
Windows/Win32 providers with exact application ownership, cancellation, input
    recovery, and terminal failure reporting.

The old WinAppDriver version and port-conflict requirements are therefore
obsolete. The issue remains open because the retirement precondition that
matters is not complete: the ten focus-crash cases plus the focus-movement case
must be ported to native portable plans, preserve the three-second
post-activation survival check, run in Windows Fabric CI, and remain
unquarantined. The removal is done; regression-coverage parity is the remaining
    outcome.

Retirement is implemented by #4294. Closing that delivered milestone; the unfinished ten delayed focus-survival cases, Button Tab movement, and original visibility/status parity are preserved in #4347, with native catalog crashes separately tracked in #4344.
