Coding agents already batch shell commands, but composing workspace reads, patches, and process sessions still requires repeated MCP round trips. This experimental surface lets the model run JavaScript against existing DevSpace tool handlers, with generated signatures supplied by open_workspace and automatic workspace binding. An isolated QuickJS worker executes the script while normal validation and workspace restrictions remain in place.
Enable with DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE=1 at server startup. It exposes execute, poll_execution, and cancel_execution alongside open_workspace and the native show_changes review card; with the flag unset, existing tool modes are unchanged. Long scripts return an execution ID rather than holding the MCP call open. Scripts are bounded by a five-minute deadline, 32 nested calls, and four concurrent nested calls.
This is intentionally a server-local experiment: executions do not survive a restart, and completed tool operations are not rolled back on failure or cancellation. Native artifact download remains available separately when enabled.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added experimental Code Mode, disabled by default, for running JavaScript with workspace tools, checking execution progress, and canceling scripts.
Execution results include status, output, and tool-call details. Scripts have runtime and resource limits, and cancellation stops associated processes.
When Code Mode is disabled, the existing tool surface remains unchanged.
Documentation
Documented how to enable Code Mode, its limits and behavior, and how to restore the configured tools.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
The change adds an environment-gated Code Mode surface to the MCP server. It provides workspace-scoped sandboxed execution, polling, and cancellation, with execution and process limits. The server returns tool signatures and execution results. Tests, QA scenarios, and documentation cover enabled and disabled modes.

Summary
Configuration and tool registry package.json, src/config.ts, src/config.test.ts, src/code-mode-registry.ts
Configuration enables Code Mode only when DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE equals "1". The registry stores tool definitions and exposes workspace-bound tools and signatures.
Execution and process ownership src/code-mode-executions.ts, src/code-mode-executions.test.ts, src/process-sessions.ts, src/process-sessions.test.ts
The execution manager starts, polls, cancels, and shuts down workspace-scoped runs. It applies execution, memory, call-count, and concurrency limits. ProcessOwner tracks commands started by an execution and attempts bounded termination.
MCP server integration src/server.ts, src/server.test.ts
The server conditionally exposes Code Mode signatures and execution tools. Tests cover discovery, execution, polling, cancellation, shutdown, limits, and stateless HTTP MCP.
QA scenarios and configuration guide scripts/qa/scenarios/code-mode*.json, docs/configuration.md
QA scenarios exercise enabled and disabled configurations. The guide documents activation, tools, execution behavior, limits, and environment variables.

A rabbit reads the tool signatures bright, Then scripts hop safely through the night. Four busy runs can bound and play, While polls bring back what’s done today. Cancelled commands are asked to cease, And workspaces settle into peace.

[High impact] Adds new scripted tool execution runtime with external dependency.
Not safe to merge as-is: cancellation and standalone server closure both allow workspace changes after the caller expects execution to have stopped. Both defects must be fixed before merging; the shared execution-cap improvement is non-blocking.
The executed script uses unchanged production managers and tool handlers to compare cancellation timing and assert post-cancellation writes, reproducing the claimed race.
The real integration run observed completed cancellation followed by late session registration and continuing timestamped writes, confirming the defect.
The authored TypeScript harness runs the real in-memory MCP fixture with a post-close release gate and an optional shutdown connection, demonstrating the precise lifecycle claim without production edits.
Ran the harness against unmodified PR399 head and captured full MCP responses plus two mutations after server.close() resolved, confirming that both the command and script outlive closure.
Ran the same fixture with shutdown awaited during closure and captured both markers remaining absent after the gate was released, showing that connecting execution shutdown prevents the reproduced effects.
This authored and executed TypeScript harness invokes the real manager start path, observes real workers, holds bounded tool calls, asserts concurrency and configuration, and shuts everything down.
This authored and executed Python script runs the four-script and six-script cases and captures their actual output with command, working directory, and exit code.
The executed control held four scripts in four real workers and observed sixteen nested calls before successful completion and cleanup, establishing the comparison baseline.
The executed challenge held six scripts in six real workers with individual 256 MiB configured allowances and twenty-four nested calls, confirming no shared four-worker admission limit.

Summary
Adds opt-in JavaScript tool composition through DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE.
Agents can combine workspace tools in bounded JavaScript scripts.
The cancellation and server-closure defects must be fixed before merging.
…nistically
Commands started by a script are now adopted by a ProcessOwner the moment they
spawn, so cancelling covers a command whose exec_command call has not returned
yet. cancel_execution resolves only after the script and its commands stop.
Server close (legacy createMcpServer and createServer) now shuts executions
down, at most four scripts run per server, and the nested-call limiter hands a
released slot straight to the next waiter.

Replay QA on 7cd929e3 (harness from #404, scenarios in scripts/qa/scenarios/):
PASS code-mode (DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE=1): open_workspace returns the tools declarations. One execute script reads README.md, applies a patch and runs git status (status completed, ~335 ms). show_changes then renders the 2 changed files.
PASS code-mode-disabled (flag unset, tools.mode: codex): the tool list is open_workspace, read, apply_patch, exec_command, write_stdin, show_changes, with no execute/poll_execution/cancel_execution. The open_workspace output schema has no code_mode. QA caught that the schema leaked this field while disabled; fixed in 620e49e.
PASS built-ins claude-edit-review, codex-edit-review, worktree-open against this checkout.
Re Greptile's summary findings: fixed in 433c69b. Server-closure leak: createMcpServer's close/onclose and createServer.close now await CodeModeExecutions.shutdown(), and starts after shutdown are rejected. Unbounded executions: at most 4 scripts run per server; a 5th gets an actionable tool error naming poll_execution/cancel_execution. Both are covered by server tests.

A command descendant that leaves the process group via setsid can keep
inherited output open after the group is killed, so waiting for close
blocked cancel and shutdown forever. Termination now waits a bounded
time after SIGKILL and reports commands that never confirmed their exit
on the execution instead of declaring a clean stop.
