fix(runtime): preserve deliveries when workflow versions are missing - #25
A signal or approval delivered after its workflow version is removed currently consumes the delivery and leaves the run stuck in running. Reject it before changing the store so restoring the missing version lets the same delivery resume the run.
This carries forward @mandrews' fix from #24 with his original commit and adds two corrections found during review: execute the exact definition that passed the version check, and keep processing other due timers after a version mismatch. A sweep visits each timer at most once, preserves sequential timer wakeups, and reports remaining work when a timer is rejected.
The result union gains version-mismatch. Existing successful deliveries and unversioned runs keep their behavior. Consumers with exhaustive result switches may need to handle the new result, so this is called out for maintainer review before release.
Validation: NX_DAEMON=false NX_BASE=origin/main pnpm test:ci passed across 10 projects, including runtime tests, store tests, types, builds, lint and repository checks. Runtime coverage is 53 tests. Both additional regressions failed against the contributor's original patch and pass with these corrections. Size-limit passed at 8.46 kB against 16 kB. Store tests use local test implementations, not deployed cloud services.
Signal, approval, and timer deliveries are rejected when a run’s workflow version is unavailable. The run remains paused, and pending deliveries are not consumed; they can be retried after the workflow version is restored.
Timer processing continues to other eligible runs after a version mismatch.
The Cloudflare D1 payment example now returns HTTP 503 for version-mismatch results.
Documentation
Updated replay and resume guidance with version-mismatch behavior and delivery retry recommendations.
A signal, approval, or timer delivered to a run whose workflow version is
no longer registered was consumed by the store before core detected the
mismatch, leaving the run `running` with no lease, no error, and nothing
awaited. Restoring the version didn't help: redelivery returned
`not-waiting`, and stale-run recovery skips runs whose lease was released.
The runtime now checks the run's persisted version against the current
workflow and its `previousVersions` before handing the delivery to the
store. On a mismatch it returns `version-mismatch` and leaves the run
`paused`, so fixing the deploy lets the same delivery resume it. Sweeps
stop the timer pass instead of re-claiming a rejected timer.
Fixes#24
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Signal and approval deliveries now check workflow-version compatibility before consumption. Timer sweeps claim batches and track version-mismatch rejections. The runtime result kind includes version-mismatch, and tests cover paused runs, compatible previous versions, and continued timer processing.

The runtime checks workflow-version compatibility before consuming signal and approval deliveries. It returns version-mismatch when the stored version is unavailable and leaves the run paused. The runtime reuses the validated workflow after delivery. Tests cover missing and compatible versions, duplicate signals, and rejected deliveries. The documentation describes retry handling, and the payment endpoint returns HTTP 503 for a version mismatch.

Signals and approvals for runs with missing workflow versions are now rejected safely. Timer sweeps can still delay other runs through leased or repeatedly rejected timers. Webhook senders may also drop rejected deliveries. Resolve these before merging or explicitly accept them.

Thanks for the review. The delivery and retry fixes are in, but the timer findings still need work before this can land.
AI review notes:
Updated the existing branch in 37538b2. Delivery preparation now checks persisted replay state, preserves the store's no-op results for terminated runs, and returns not-found before attempting delivery when the run is absent. The Cloudflare D1 payment example returns HTTP 503 on version-mismatch, and the docs explain that rejected payloads must be retained or retried by the caller.
Both new regression tests failed before the fixes and pass afterward. The full local test:ci suite passed with NX_BASE=origin/main, the runtime driver has 31 passing tests, and the core size check is 8.46 kB against the 16 kB limit. The previousVersions test now also checks the v1 output.
The maxTimers=1 case confirms that a rejected timer can prevent a later compatible timer from running. The current store contract also has no ownership-checked timer-claim release operation for a deadline-shortened batch. Those findings remain open. The public version-mismatch result is still awaiting owner review, and this update is not a release.

A signal or approval delivered after its workflow version is removed currently consumes the delivery and leaves the run stuck in
running.
The result union gains
version-mismatch. Existing successful deliveries and unversioned runs keep their behavior. Consumers with exhaustive result switches may need to handle the new result, so this is called out for maintainer review before release.Validation:
