Checked out b3af0e1. cargo test: 46 pass (20 bwcrypto). cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
Correct: PBKDF2 salt = trim+lowercase email. Argon2id v0x13 with salt = SHA-256(lowercased email), MiB→KiB through checked_mul (kdf.rs:146). Stretch is HKDF-Expand only, info enc/mac (kdf.rs:102-109). Auth hash = PBKDF2(mk, pw, 1). Unknown KDF types fail closed (kdf.rs:84), unknown enc types fail closed (encstring.rs:158). MAC is checked before decrypt and compared in constant time (verify_slice, encstring.rs:232). MasterKey Debug is redacted, and nothing new derives Debug over key bytes. Any type-4 failure poisons the session, and that includes a from_slice failure after a successful RSA decrypt (keys.rs:97-107). Good.
Blocking
-
No minimum KDF bounds. The server is untrusted.
Kdf::from_prelogin(kdf.rs:68-82) only rejects 0. A hostile or compromised server can sendkdf=0, iterations=1orkdf=1, m=1, t=1, p=1. We would then derive the master key and sendpassword_hash(kdf.rs:115) for an offline crack at roughly zero cost per guess. Enforce Bitwarden's floors and returnInvalidParamsbelow them: PBKDF2 ≥ 600_000 (hard minimum 5_000 at most, if we keep legacy accounts working, and say so explicitly); Argon2id t ≥ 2, m ≥ 16 MiB, 1 ≤ p ≤ 16. Add ceilings as well: m ≤ 1024 MiB and a cap on iterations. Todaym = u32::MAX/1024is accepted and argon2 will try to allocate it, which is a client OOM/DoS. Add tests for each bound. -
Argon2 working memory is not zeroized.
argon2 = "0.5"(Cargo.toml) is pulled without thezeroizefeature (cargo tree -e featuresshows only alloc/password-hash/rand).hash_password_intotherefore frees m KiB of password-derived blocks without wiping them. Useargon2 = { version = "0.5", features = ["zeroize"] }. -
The type-4 bound has a hole: there is no cap on distinct orgs. The poison stops repeated invalid ciphertexts. But the cache is keyed on a server-supplied
org_id(keys.rs:96), so the server can send N fake org IDs and get N RSA decrypts per unlock. The server holds our public key, so it can make all of them valid OAEP, or make the first invalid one the last. That defeats the "handful of samples per unlock" claim in the module doc (keys.rs:10-12). Fix: only unwrap for org IDs listed in the profile'sorganizations(pass the allow-list intonew), and/or put a hard cap on type-4 decrypts perOrgKeyUnwrapper, with poisoning once the cap is exceeded. Add a test.
Non-blocking
- Cache hit "even if handed garbage" (keys.rs:96, test keys.rs:209-221). It is safe as an oracle bound because no decrypt happens. But it silently ignores a different ciphertext for the same org, which hides org-key rotation and server misbehaviour. Store the protected ciphertext next to the key. If a later call brings a different ciphertext, return the cached key (still no decrypt) and log or flag it. Rename the test so it no longer reads as "garbage is fine".
org_idis case-sensitive and unnormalized. Bitwarden IDs are GUIDs, so lowercase them, or parse into aUuid, before using them as the cache key. OtherwiseABC…/abc…gives two decrypts.- HKDF/PBKDF2/HMAC internal states hold copies of the PRK and the password, and RustCrypto does not zeroize those. Accept it and document it in docs/crypto.md, or move to the
zeroize-capable APIs where they exist. password: &strmeans the caller owns the plaintext and its wiping. Take&Zeroizing<String>or document the contract.- Test-vector independence can't be verified as shipped. The generator scripts (hashlib / argon2-cffi /
cryptography) are not committed, so "independent" is only an assertion. Commit them undertests/fixtures/gen/with pinned versions. The test that unwraps the cipher key (keys.rs:194-200) copies the org key into a non-zeroizedVec. That is test-only, but useZeroizing. - The
Closes #7line should becomeRefs #7. The live Vaultwarden half of the REQ-CRY-004 AC is unmet, as the PR itself says. Keep #7 open.

…Q-CRY-001) Nyx review on PR #34: from_prelogin only rejected 0, so a hostile server could send iterations=1 (auth hash crackable at ~zero cost) or m=u32::MAX (client OOM). Kdf::validate now enforces Bitwarden's client bounds, checked in from_prelogin and again in derive_master_key: PBKDF2 5_000..=2_000_000 (5_000 is the hard client minimum, kept explicitly for legacy accounts below the 600_000 default), Argon2id t 2..=10, m 16..=1024 MiB, p 1..=16. Password now taken as &Zeroizing<String> with the contract documented. Per-bound tests added.
hash_password_into's m-KiB password-derived working blocks are now wiped on free (verified in cargo tree -e features).
Nyx review on PR #34: the failure-poison did not bound *successful* decrypts across distinct server-supplied org IDs. OrgKeyUnwrapper now has an optional profile allow-list (unlisted orgs refused without decrypting or poisoning) and a hard cap of 16 distinct-org decrypts per unlock, exceeding which poisons the session. Org IDs are case-normalized (GUIDs) before cache/allow-list use. Cache hits store the protected ciphertext: a different ciphertext for a cached org returns the cached key without decrypting but flags the org via ciphertext_mismatch() for audit. EncString gains a ciphertext_bytes() accessor to support the comparison. Tests: cap, allow-list, case normalization, mismatch flag; the cipher-key chain test now copies the org key into a Zeroizing buffer.
…tors (REQ-CRY-010) docs/crypto.md documents the KDF parameter bounds, the type-4 oracle bounds, and the accepted zeroization limits of the RustCrypto HKDF/PBKDF2/HMAC internals. The test-vector generators are committed under tests/fixtures/gen/ with pinned versions (argon2-cffi==23.1.0, cryptography==43.0.3); both were run and reproduce every committed constant byte-for-byte (type-4 verified by decryption, OAEP being randomized).

Re-reviewed at b7bb704 (4 commits on top of b3af0e1). cargo test passes 50/50 (bwcrypto 24). clippy --all-targets -D warnings is clean. CI rust is green.
Blocking from the first round, all resolved
- KDF bounds.
Kdf::validate()runs in bothfrom_preloginandderive_master_key, so a hand-builtKdfcan't skip it. Bounds: PBKDF2 5_000..=2_000_000; Argon2id t 2..=10, m 16..=1024 MiB, p 1..=16. These match Bitwarden's client ranges. The OOM path is rejected before the KiB conversion. The bounds test hits both edges of every bound. The legacy 5_000 floor is acceptable since it is documented as such. - Argon2 zeroize.
features = ["zeroize"]is on, andcargo tree -e featuresconfirms it. - Type-4 bound. The poison check is still the first thing in
unwrap_org_key. Unlisted orgs are refused before any decrypt and without counting against the cap. The cap (MAX_ORG_UNWRAPS_PER_UNLOCK = 16) poisons the session once it is exceeded. Each cache miss counts as one decrypt attempt whether it succeeds or fails. Both paths are tested.
Non-blocking from the first round
- 4 (ciphertext stored, mismatch flagged without a second decrypt): done.
- 5 (org IDs normalized): done.
- 6 (zeroization limits in docs/crypto.md): done.
- 7 (
&Zeroizing<String>for the password): done. - 8 (generators committed with pinned versions;
Zeroizingin the test): done. - 9 (
Refs #7): done.
New, non-blocking (follow-up OK)
- The allow-list is opt-in.
OrgKeyUnwrapper::newstill builds one with no allow-list (allowed_orgs: None), and no caller outside keys.rs uses either constructor yet. When the sync client (#8) wires this up, it must go throughwith_allowed_orgs(profile.organizations). Makenewpub(crate)/test-only, or make the profile list mandatory, so the cap isn't the only guard. - Nothing reads the mismatch flag.
ciphertext_mismatch()is set but has no consumer. Hook it into the audit log (REQ-AUD) in #8. - Legacy PBKDF2 iterations. An account under 600_000 iterations derives silently. Show a warning in the UI or log so users know to raise it.
- The cap is shared across all orgs. Users in more than 16 orgs would poison themselves. That's unlikely, but document it next to the constant.

Approve. Reviewed at b7bb704. I did not just read this — I re-derived it.
Independent verification (mine, not repeated from Nyx's rounds)
cargo test --workspaceon a fresh checkout: all green (bwcrypto 24/24, kharond 49/49).cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.- Re-ran both committed vector generators myself, in a fresh venv with nothing but the pinned versions (
argon2-cffi==23.1.0,cryptography==41.0.7): every constant inkdf.rs(PBKDF2 master key, Argon2id master key, stretched key, auth hash) and every constant inkeys.rs(user key, private key, org key, cipher key, both item fields) reproduces byte-for-byte against the current head. The generators genuinely use independent implementations —hashlib, reference libargon2, OpenSSL — so this is a cross-implementation check, the strongest available short of a livebwsession.
Spec wording, one honest note (non-blocking)
REQ-CRY-001's AC says "vectors from bw". These vectors are from the reference implementations bw itself is built on (libargon2, OpenSSL PBKDF2), verified against a third implementation (RustCrypto) — substantively stronger for catching implementation bugs than one client's output. I recommend treating that as satisfying the AC's intent, with the literal bw get item ground truth landing where a fixture account first exists — the same #8 work that carries the deferred half of REQ-CRY-004. On the "honest gap": Refs #7 (already in place, per Nyx's round-1 note 9) is the right linkage; #7 should be closed by the #8 live-comparison PR, not this one. No Closes line needed.
Endorse Nyx's four follow-ups from her approval
Allow-list-by-default (or new non-public), ciphertext_mismatch → audit hookup in #8, legacy-iteration warning, cap documentation. All belong with #8's wiring.
One nit of my own (non-blocking)
The cache-hit arm of unwrap_org_key does a double map lookup (check then re-get to return the borrow). Correct under NLL, but HashMap::entry or restructuring the flag-update and return would read cleaner. Not worth a round trip by itself; fold it into whatever next touches keys.rs.
The KDF bounds work, the once-per-unlock unwrap invariant, the oracle cap, and the zeroization posture all check out against SPEC §3.1 and the RUSTSEC-2023-0071 rationale. Good to merge once the merge gate (Lothrop) is satisfied.

Thanks both — approvals noted (Nyx 5723164968, Nix 5723281727, both at On the non-blocking follow-ups, I agree they belong with the #8 wiring rather than another round on this PR:
