normalizeChatMath(text) changes math-like content inside code fences nested under list items, so - ```\n \(x\)\n ```` renders and copies instead of the literal(x)`. Its fence detection does not recognize the opening fence after the list marker; update it to track list-contained fences before normalizing their contents.

normalizeChatMath(text) rewrites the valid inline expression $2 + 2$ to \$2 + 2$, so remarkMath no longer sees a math delimiter and the equation renders as literal text. The currency-detection rule treats the opening $ as currency because the following digit is followed by whitespace; it should only escape that case when the delimiter cannot form a valid math span.

When parseRawHtml is enabled, raw HTML code such as <pre>\(x\)</pre> is rendered and copied as <pre>$x$</pre> instead of preserving the authored literal content. normalizeChatMath(text) only protects fenced Markdown code and still rewrites math delimiters inside raw HTML; make it skip raw HTML blocks (including their contents) during normalization.

Math rendering is wired up correctly through both the sanitized and unsanitized pipelines (language-math survives the schema, so rehypeKatex after rehypeSanitize still renders). Two issues remain around the KaTeX styling contract — see inline comments.

Enabling KaTeX introduces a wide block that no .chat-markdown rule owns. KaTeX's own CSS sets white-space: nowrap on .katex-display > .katex and provides no horizontal overflow handling, and the container's [overflow-wrap:anywhere] cannot break it — so a long $$…$$ equation overflows the message column instead of scrolling, unlike every other wide block here (.chat-markdown pre has max-width: 100%; overflow-x: auto plus the thin scrollbar treatment, and tables live in the scroll-fade container).
Generated-markdown chrome is global-CSS-owned in this codebase, so the smallest fix is a rule next to .chat-markdown pre in apps/web/src/index.css:
.chat-markdown .katex-display {
max-width: 100%;
overflow-x: auto;
overflow-y: hidden;
scrollbar-width: thin;
scrollbar-color: color-mix(in srgb, var(--contrast-border) 78%, transparent) transparent;
}Posted via Macroscope — UI Consistency

This stylesheet and the renderer that produces the markup are two different KaTeX versions. The import resolves to apps/web's new direct dependency katex@0.18.4, while rehype-katex@7.0.1 renders with its own katex@0.16.47 (see pnpm-lock.yaml). KaTeX's CSS is version-locked to the HTML it emits (KaTeX_* @font-face set, .katex* structure, the .katex-mathml clip rule that hides the MathML copy), so mixing them risks fallback-font metrics or a visible duplicate of the equation text — and it also ships a second copy of KaTeX's assets.
Smallest fix: declare the direct katex dependency at the version rehype-katex resolves (^0.16.x, consistent with the @types/katex: ^0.16.8 devDependency already added) so this CSS comes from the same package instance that renders the math.

ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds automatic KaTeX rendering and a substantial pre-parser to every web chat-markdown path, changing existing content behavior rather than adding an opt-in mode. Unresolved concerns span code preservation, link destinations, sanitization, copying, parser offsets, mobile parity, dependency versions, and equation layout. Not approved because:

Preserve the display-math class through sanitization
For assistant messages, where parseRawHtml defaults to true, the sanitizer runs before this plugin and the configured schema does not allow math-display on <code>. The default schema retains language-math but strips math-display, so rehype-katex still processes $$…$$ and \[…\] but uses inline mode rather than producing the intended .katex-display output. Preserve the display marker in the sanitize schema or otherwise sanitize without removing the mode before invoking KaTeX.

Add math rendering to the mobile chat surface
Checked the web/desktop ChatMarkdown path and the mobile ThreadFeed path: this only adds typesetting to web/desktop, while mobile continues to pass messages through @t3tools/mobile-markdown-text, whose math_inline and math_block cases append the source as plain text. Consequently, the same provider response is typeset on web/desktop but unformatted on iOS and Android; implement the corresponding mobile behavior rather than limiting this chat fix to one client.

Do not escape numeric-leading inline formulas
When valid inline math begins with a number followed by whitespace or /, such as $2 + 2 = 4$ or $1/2$, this currency heuristic rewrites the opening delimiter to \$. remark-math therefore never receives a matching math span and the newly supported formula remains literal; the price check needs to consider the matching closing delimiter or otherwise distinguish these common formulas from currency.

Keep display math inside its blockquote
For a quoted display expression such as > \[x+y\] or > $$x+y$$, matching is performed against the stripped content, but the replacement returned here omits the original > prefix. The formula is consequently rendered outside the blockquote and changes the message structure; preserve and apply the container prefix to every generated display-math line.

Replace the static-markup class assertions
These new component tests render to a string and assert KaTeX's generated class attribute, coupling coverage to implementation markup instead of meaningful observable behavior. Replace these assertions with focused parser/plugin behavior coverage or an appropriate integrated client assertion, as required by the repository's testing guidance.

Preserve formulas when copying rendered chat
When a user selects and copies rendered math such as $x^2$, the existing chat clipboard serializer recursively reads KaTeX's .katex-mathml subtree while skipping only the aria-hidden HTML presentation. That subtree contains both MathML token text and the TeX <annotation>, so the plain-text clipboard becomes duplicated content such as x2x^2 instead of the original $x^2$; mark KaTeX output with its Markdown source or add a serializer case for the annotation.

Protect reference-style link destinations
The destination guard only recognizes inline links containing ](, so a reference definition such as [source]: https://example.com/\(intro\) reaches normalizeMathText and is rewritten to a different URL containing $intro$. Messages using [Open][source] will therefore navigate to the wrong target; protect reference-definition destinations before normalizing provider delimiters.

Track inline code spans across line boundaries
CommonMark code spans may cross a newline, but splitting the input here makes inline-code state local to each line. For valid source such as an opening backtick followed on the next line by \(x\) and the closing backtick, the second line is normalized to $x$ even though it belongs to the code span, silently changing the displayed code example; scan code-span delimiters across the complete source rather than independently per line.

Respect escaped provider delimiters
When prose intentionally contains two backslashes before each parenthesis, as in Markdown source \\(x\\) used to display the literal \(x\), this regex starts matching at the second backslash and rewrites the text to escaped dollar signs. The rendered message consequently displays $x$ instead of the authored delimiter example; check the preceding escape parity and normalize only unescaped provider delimiters.

Keep parser offsets aligned with editable task lists
Passing the normalized string into ReactMarkdown changes source lengths—\(x\) shrinks, protected prices gain a backslash, and display forms gain newlines—but the list-item renderer still applies each normalized node.position.start.offset to the original text. In FileMarkdownPreview, a task appearing after any such transformation therefore receives a missing or incorrect marker offset, so toggling its checkbox does nothing or can target the wrong task; retain an offset map or avoid length-changing preprocessing before parsing.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

What Changed
Chat markdown now parses and renders inline and display mathematics with
remark-math,rehype-katex, and KaTeX.Supported input includes:
$x^2$\(x^2\)$$x^2$$\[x^2\]lineProvider-style delimiters are normalized before markdown parsing, but source inside fenced code, indented code, inline code, link destinations, and HTML tags remains unchanged.
Why
Agent responses frequently use LaTeX delimiters that the existing markdown pipeline displayed as literal punctuation. Some delimiters, particularly
\(…\)and\[…\], also need source-level normalization because CommonMark consumes their escapes before a later syntax-tree plugin can recognize them.The normalizer is deliberately conservative. It preserves common currency forms such as
$5-$10,$5/month,$5%, and($5 off), and leaves inline bracket forms such as\[1\]literal because those are commonly citations rather than equations.Test Coverage
