Closes #5087

What Changed

I solely use GitHub Enterprise, and noticed it was missing here. Figured it wouldn't be that big of a change to support, since they both go through the gh CLI anyway. I haven't recorded a video yet because of privacy company reasons. But can try to record a video later with blurred out data.

Rest of this is AI:

  • Discovery — SourceControlCliDiscoverySpec gains an optional expandInstances hook, so a single CLI probe can emit several rows. gh auth status --json hosts produces one github row plus one github-enterprise:<host> row per enterprise host. Every other provider keeps its existing one-row behavior.
  • Detection — .ghe.com hosts and github-containing hostnames classify as enterprise. For hostnames that look like nothing in particular (git.acme.internal), the GitHub spec implements the existing refineUnknownRemote hook — the same escape hatch GitLab already uses — and claims a remote whose host matches an authenticated gh host.
  • CLI targeting — an in-repo gh call reads its host from the git remote, so it needs nothing extra. A call with no repo context to borrow from silently falls back to github.com, so GitHubCli.execute sets GH_HOST when a host is supplied, and the enterprise provider refuses the two operations that can never infer one: gh search repos and gh repo create. Repo-less lookups are refused a layer up, in SourceControlRepositoryService.
  • Bare names — enterprise users type core, not team-a/core, so a bare name resolves through gh search repos. An exact repo-name match wins; a sole near match resolves; anything ambiguous fails naming the candidates rather than letting search ranking pick.
  • Threading — host flows through lookup, clone, and publish. Publishing to github-enterprise without a host fails with a clear message rather than silently targeting github.com.
  • UI — one "GitHub Enterprise" card; when several hosts are authenticated a secondary radio row picks between them. Matches the radio-card pattern used everywhere else in settings rather than introducing a dropdown. Hosts that are not authenticated render as Setup Required in both places, so the dialog cannot land on one and strand itself.
  • Consumers — PR URL parsing, PR template detection, command palette, add-project targets, and the mobile icon all handle the new kind.

Also fixes a latent bug the reclassification exposed: GitManager's PR-template lookup was gated on kind === "github", so a github.acme.com remote would have silently stopped finding .github/pull_request_template.md once it moved to the enterprise kind.

Why

gh already talks to enterprise hosts. The app just never asked it which ones. Today a GHES or GHEC-data-residency remote lands in the unknown bucket, so PR listing, PR creation, publish, and clone are all unavailable to anyone whose work repos live on a company instance — even though the CLI underneath supports them fully.

Separate kind rather than an optional host on github: people are commonly authenticated against github.com plus one or more enterprise hosts at the same time, and discovery rows and settings entries are keyed by kind, so a single github row cannot represent them. This is also the shape Cursor uses — GitHub and GitHub Enterprise as distinct connections, several enterprise connections allowed.

UI Changes

There is no meaningful "before" for these screens — the enterprise host does not appear at all today, so the before state is its absence. After:

Source control settings showing a GitHub Enterprise connection Publish flow with GitHub Enterprise selected Host selection between authenticated enterprise hosts

Checklist

  • This PR is small and focused
  • I explained what changed and why
  • I included before/after screenshots for any UI changes
  • I included a video for animation/interaction changes

Note

Medium Risk
Broad PR URL matching and host-scoped gh calls affect integration-critical paths; mistakes could mis-route links or target the wrong GitHub host when multiple are authenticated.

Overview
Introduces github-enterprise as its own source-control and pull-request kind so github.com and one or more enterprise hosts can coexist in discovery, settings, and add-project flows.

Server: gh auth status can expand into multiple discovery rows (github plus github-enterprise:<host>). GitHubCli sets GH_HOST / --hostname when a host is supplied; enterprise lookup, clone, and publish require an explicit host so calls do not silently hit github.com. Bare repo names on enterprise resolve via gh search repos with exact/ambiguous handling. GitHub providers are built via makeProvider(kind); PR viewer resolution is host-scoped. Unknown remotes can be refined to enterprise when the host is authenticated in gh. PR templates and stacked commit/push/PR behavior apply to enterprise as well as github.com.

Clients: Web command palette, publish repository dialog (enterprise card + host radios), and mobile add-project pass host through repository lookup. Shared add-project helpers use per-target ids for readiness. PR URL/reference parsing accepts /{owner}/{repo}/pull/{n} on any hostname (not only GitHub-looking domains).

Note

Add GitHub Enterprise as a supported source control and pull request provider

  • Introduces github-enterprise as a distinct provider kind across contracts, discovery, source control, and pull request layers, with gh CLI operations targeting specific hosts via GH_HOST and --hostname flags.
  • expandGitHubInstances in GitHubSourceControlProvider.ts parses gh auth status to emit separate discovery items for github.com and each authenticated enterprise host.
  • Repository lookup, clone, and publish flows in SourceControlRepositoryService.ts now enforce that github-enterprise operations supply an explicit host, and forward that host to the provider.
  • Web and mobile UIs in CommandPalette.tsx, GitActionsControl.tsx, and AddProjectScreen.tsx surface per-host enterprise entries with readiness indicators and host pickers.
  • GitHub PR URL parsing in openPullRequestLink.ts and pullRequestReference.ts now matches on path shape alone, accepting any hostname.
  • Risk: non-GitHub hosts whose paths incidentally match /{owner}/{repo}/pull/{n} will now be claimed as GitHub PRs.

Macroscope summarized b17677b.

Separate `github-enterprise` provider kind supporting multiple
enterprise hosts, derived from `gh auth status`. Reuses the existing
`gh` CLI integration; host targeting via GH_HOST for repo-less
operations.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Twelve TDD tasks from contract through mobile, each ending in a
committed, independently testable deliverable.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every test file the plan touches already exists, and the repo mixes
@effect/vitest with vite-plus/test per file. Tasks 2 and 8 said to
create files that are already there.
Review feedback: fan one card per enterprise host was rejected in favor
of a single "GitHub Enterprise" card plus a secondary host radio row,
matching the existing card idiom instead of introducing a dropdown.
…vailable

buildAddProjectRemoteTargets(null) was dropping the four base provider
kinds entirely, leaving users with only the url option until discovery
resolves. Seed them as unready fallback targets instead, matching the
pre-task behavior and hint text.
expandGitHubInstances stamps the host on the github row, so the
Task 3 assertion of an absent host has been stale since it landed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The test title claimed an unauthenticated row, but exit code 0 with
unparseable JSON falls through parseGitHubAuth to the "unknown" branch.
Assert auth.status explicitly so the title and the assertion agree.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
An `unknown` remote's provider name is the host including its port, so a
GHES server at git.corp.com:8443 never matched the port-less host that
`gh auth status` reports. Normalize both sides before comparing.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Template detection was gated on the `github` kind, so enterprise repos
with .github/pull_request_template.md silently generated PR bodies that
ignored it. Hosts previously classified as `github` regressed when they
started resolving to `github-enterprise`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every target inherited its discovery row's host, so the plain github
target started sending host=github.com, which made GitHubCli set GH_HOST
and copy process.env onto the highest-traffic gh repo view path for no
behavioural gain.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The enterprise publish card hard-coded ready:true, so an expired token on
git.corp.com showed no Setup Required badge and could auto-select as the
first ready provider, failing with a raw gh error. Readiness now comes
from the row for that host, and the shared resolver takes a host so two
enterprise connections no longer answer for each other.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A bare name (e.g. "core") on an enterprise host resolves against the
caller's personal namespace via `gh repo view`, which is usually empty.
Bare names now fall back to `gh search repos`, preferring an exact
repo-name match over search rank, only for github-enterprise providers.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
These were working notes for the implementation, not something the
repo needs to carry.

One finding: the new GH_HOST plumbing in GitHubCli reads the ambient globalThis.process.env inside the service instead of relying on the environment the process runner already supplies.

`gh api user` reads no repository context, so it answered for github.com
wherever it ran: an Enterprise-only sign-in reported the host as signed out,
and a dual sign-in reported the github.com login, which every involvement
filter and author check on that host then compared against.

The host travels with the call, as it already does for every other read.
`GitHubCli.execute` drops its copy of the parent environment with it — the
process runner extends the host environment wherever `env` is set, so the
spread only pinned a snapshot of it.
… taxonomy

The ambiguous and no-match outcomes were spelled out inside the error
constructor, so the failure boundary carried a ternary over the match tag as
well as its own fields. The sentence now lives with `pickRepositorySearchMatch`,
which owns that taxonomy; the error keeps the structural fields it always had.

`/pull/{n}` was only read below a hostname carrying `github`, so a link to a
ghe.com tenant or a GHES install named for its company left the app for the
system browser even with that repository checked out.

An Enterprise host is named whatever its admin chose, so there is no hostname
to ask about. The shape is read on any host and tried last, and the claim is
worth what it always was: `findProjectForChangeRequest` opens the page only for
a repository this workspace holds, and a lookalike matches none.

Three findings from the PR review:

- `changeRequestUrlFor` had no `github-enterprise` case, so it returned null
and the MCP pull request tool and the link dialog produced no URL for an
Enterprise pull request the parser already reads.
- `gh search repos` ran unscoped, so GitHub also scored description and readme
hits. The bare-name resolver reads those results as repository names, where a
description match can resolve as the sole near match. Scoped with `--match name`.
- Add-project and publish readiness only rejected `unauthenticated`, so the
`unknown` a CLI too old to report its sign-in status answers with read as
ready and sent the user into a failure the row already knew about.

Pass the selected host to every GitHub pull-request listing command

When listChangeRequests receives an enterprise context, pass its selected host to both branches. The open branch calls listOpenPullRequests without a host, and that API also omits the host when it calls execute. The other-state branch calls execute without a host. Since GitHubCli.execute sets GH_HOST only when input.host is provided, these commands can use the inherited or default host instead of the enterprise host. Extend listOpenPullRequests to accept and forward the host, and pass the same host to the non-open execute call.

Reject credential-bearing HTTP Forgejo origins. ForgejoSourceControlProvider preserves an http:// login URL, and ForgejoCli.requestFj sends the stored token in the Authorization header to that URL. Require HTTPS before attaching credentials, or refuse authenticated HTTP requests.

295-295: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize mounted Forgejo SSH remotes.

For ssh://git@code.test/forgejo/maria/project.git, resolveRemoteRepositoryContext keeps forgejo/maria/project, while Forgejo uses maria/project. A mixed SSH/HTTP remote setup can therefore set isCrossRepository incorrectly, and matchesBranchHeadContext can reject a valid pull request because the repository identities differ.

Apply Forgejo normalization to every supported remote syntax. Add an end-to-end mounted SSH test.

Proposed fix
-  if (providerKind === "forgejo" && /^https?:\/\//iu.test(trimmed)) {
+  if (providerKind === "forgejo") {
     if (
       remoteUrl !== null &&
-      /^https?:\/\//iu.test(remoteUrl) &&
       (repositoryNameWithOwner?.split("/").length ?? 0) > 2
     ) {

Closing this contribution at 9089687 under prior approval. Features and intentional product-behavior changes outside the focused exceptions need explicit maintainer approval of direction and scope, linked in the PR.

The assessed diff introduces a separate github-enterprise provider kind, per-host discovery/selection, and enterprise repository lookup/clone/publish flows across contracts, server and clients. It also gives enterprise bare-name lookup new search-and-match behavior. This is a new connector and workflow design, beyond a focused option controlling an already-established capability; the fact that the underlying gh CLI supports enterprise hosts does not establish approval of that product direction.

#5087 describes the proposal, but its discussion contains no maintainer scope approval. The PR discussion likewise contains author/bot implementation exchanges rather than that approval. The other contributor's link to #6052 is not approval of this design.

The enterprise-host discovery gap is a useful problem report, and the supplied screenshots and focused tests are useful implementation evidence. For reconsideration, agree with maintainers in Ideas on the connector model and scope, then link their explicit approval and align the PR to it. See closure and reconsideration.
