feat(web): edit text and move around the app with vim keys - #31242
People who think in vim have to drop that habit the moment they write a prompt in T3 Code. There is no vim mode in the composer or any other text box, and moving around the app takes the mouse or a set of unrelated shortcuts.
Change
Adds an opt-in Settings → Chat → Vim mode for web and desktop. It is off by default, and the engine is lazy loaded, so nobody pays for it unless they turn it on.
Editing: the composer and every multi-line text box get motions, operators, text objects, visual mode, ., registers, marks, macros, / search, and :s. Instead of writing our own vim, this drives the @replit/codemirror-vim-core engine (exact pin, small local patch) through two adapters: one for ProseMirror and one for textareas. Chips and rich formatting survive yanks and pastes, and each insert session is one undo step.
App navigation: outside a text box, j/k scroll, J/K change threads, : opens the command palette, g chords toggle panels, and i focuses the composer. Commands run through the user's configured shortcuts, so rebinding keeps working.
Left alone: Enter still sends, app shortcuts keep working, and single-line fields and the terminal are unchanged. Mobile is not included: it has no hardware-keyboard-first editor to attach this to.
The full key list is in docs/user/keybindings.md.
There are no before images because nothing changes with the setting off.
Scope and approval
There is no linked issue or discussion, and no maintainer has approved this direction or scope. This is a new feature, so it does not qualify for an exemption. It is opened as a proposal, and I understand it may be closed under the contribution policy until that approval exists.
Verification
vp run check:changed passes on the final commit, rebased on current main: format, lint, knip, typecheck, react compiler, and the tests beside the changes (2,442 passed).
323 key sequences with expected results generated by real Vim 9.1 run against the composer.
The engine's own test suite runs against both the composer and textarea adapters. Cases that do not apply, such as % handling of code strings and comments, are listed by name in composer-vim.conformance.browser.test.ts.
Composer browser tests use the real extensions and cover lists, task items, chips, undo order, and sending.
In the real web app, I checked navigation, a textarea in a dialog, and composer editing. That pass ran before the last rebase.
After rebasing onto #30421, ** markers shown at the caret are editable text, so 0x on a bold word now removes a *. I updated the two affected tests to expect that. The rebase also needed one adapter change for the new splitOrLiftListItem argument. Both are covered by tests only, not by a new real-app pass.
Known differences from real Vim, found while checking review feedback: / and ? use JavaScript regex syntax (the engine's pcre default), so \+ is a literal plus. dit across lines does nothing. di( keeps no indented closing line, leaving () where Vim leaves (\n ).
Not tested: Electron, IME input, RTL text, Windows hardware, and in the real app the d, K, L, h, l, gb, gd, gf, gr keys and j/k in menus. Block visual mode is not supported.

The council reviewed the composer only. It did not review the textarea or navigation work, or the last two composer fixes made after round 7. Gemini only reviewed and wrote no code. The fixes for the bot review findings came after the council rounds too.
Add an opt-in Vim mode setting that covers the composer, every multi-line
text box, and keyboard navigation. Editing runs on the codemirror-vim engine
behind ProseMirror and textarea adapters, and navigation reuses the user's
configured shortcuts.

Fixed in 05fecdf. Real private-use text now flattens to its own placeholder, which decodes back to that text, so it can't resolve to a chip. "+p escapes clipboard text the same way. A new composer test covers both paths and fails if either is reverted. Text typed natively and then replayed with . still arrives unescaped; I left that out because it needs an icon-font glyph that also collides with a chip.

Fixed in 05fecdf. Rich data is now kept per register and follows the engine's routing: yanks go to 0, small deletes to -, and larger deletes to 1 with 1-8 shifted down. The engine now passes the operator to the hook. New paste rows cover "0p after a yank, "0P after a later delete, "1p, and "2p; all four fail without the routing.

Fixed in 05fecdf, but not with the suggested filter. The bug is real, and the search now runs on the full text. Real Vim 9.1 keeps a match that starts before the cursor even if it ends after it: ?bb* from column 5 of aaa bbb lands on column 4, and filtering on the end would land on column 0. So the filter uses the match start. gn relied on the old behaviour, so the engine patch now steps back past a match the cursor sits inside. The engine's gn/gN tests pass, and new rows cover both cases.

During macro replay, cc<Esc>jdd empties the next line instead of deleting it. change leaves cm.changing true, and macro keys are replayed directly through vimApi.handleKey, so the controller's finally does not reset it between commands; the following delete therefore retains its trailing newline and skips deleteWholeLines. Fixed in 05fecdf. The change operator now clears cm.changing right after its replacement, so nested macro commands no longer see it. Not a behaviour bug: real Vim 9.1 leaves (\n) for di( on (foo\nbar\n), from either of the first two lines, so the current result is correct. Both cases are now rows in the reference table. You're right that vim.lastMotion is already cleared there, which made the check dead, so 05fecdf removes it. Text objects keep the same adjustment Vim applies.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
cm.changing is set here but reset only by the controller's handleKey.
The change operator sets cm.changing = true. Only createVimController.handleKey clears the flag, in its finally block. Some code paths drive the engine without going through that wrapper:
the conformance suite, which calls Vim.handleKey directly;
ex commands that run from the prompt callback, such as :normal cw….
On those paths the flag stays true. While it is set, both replace implementations trim the line break and deleteWholeLines returns early. A later dd then leaves an empty line behind.
One fix is to reset the flag inside the engine after enterInsertMode. Another is to reset it in VimEditor.endOperation. Either way, the reset no longer depends on the host's key path.

Scope and approval
There is no linked issue or discussion, and no maintainer has approved this direction or scope. This is a new feature, so it does not qualify for an exemption. It is opened as a proposal, and I understand it may be closed under the contribution policy until that approval exists.
Verification
vp run check:changedpasses on the final commit, rebased on currentmain: format, lint, knip, typecheck, react compiler, and the tests beside the changes (2,442 passed).%handling of code strings and comments, are listed by name incomposer-vim.conformance.browser.test.ts.After rebasing onto #30421,
**markers shown at the caret are editable text, so0xon a bold word now removes a*. I updated the two affected tests to expect that. The rebase also needed one adapter change for the newsplitOrLiftListItemargument. Both are covered by tests only, not by a new real-app pass.Known differences from real Vim, found while checking review feedback:
/and?use JavaScript regex syntax (the engine'spcredefault), so\+is a literal plus.ditacross lines does nothing.di(keeps no indented closing line, leaving()where Vim leaves(\n ).Not tested: Electron, IME input, RTL text, Windows hardware, and in the real app the
d,K,L,h,l,gb,gd,gf,grkeys andj/kin menus. Block visual mode is not supported.Council review
Rounds: 7
The council reviewed the composer only. It did not review the textarea or navigation work, or the last two composer fixes made after round 7. Gemini only reviewed and wrote no code. The fixes for the bot review findings came after the council rounds too.
