fix(opencode): free-tier usage limits show when they reset - #31089
When the OpenCode free tier runs out, T3 Code fails the thread as a plain "Provider error" ("Free usage limit reached. Connect a provider or subscribe to OpenCode Go to keep going, or switch models.") with no reset time, and no "Resume at reset" or "Snooze until reset" actions. OpenCode itself shows when the limit resets ("You've used today's free messages. They reset at 5:58 AM · 11/5/2026.").
Reproduced on OpenCode 2.2.5 with opencode/crouton-alpha-free. OpenCode sends the reset time in its error:
The OpenCode 2 adapter only classified provider.quota (non-402) and provider.rate-limit as usage limits, so provider.free-limit became a provider error.
The bundled @opencode/schema 2.0.28 has no retryAfterMs on the error, so decoding the session.execution.failed event stripped the field before the adapter saw it.

[SCREENSHOT: OpenCode TUI showing the reset time for the same limit]
Change
adapter.ts: provider.free-limit is now classified as usage_limit. When the failure carries retryAfterMs, resetAt is the failure time plus that duration (a Claude "Resets at" time still takes priority). The existing banner and timeline row already show the reset time and the resume and snooze actions for any usage_limit failure with a resetAt.
OpenCode2Client.ts: after decoding a session.execution.failed event, retryAfterMs is read from the raw frame and put back on the event's error, because the bundled schema drops it.
I did not bump @opencode/* to 2.1.2, the first version whose schema keeps retryAfterMs. That bump breaks the compaction compatibility code and 7 of its tests, so it is a separate change. Everything stays in the OpenCode 2 provider code. There are no contract, web or mobile changes.
Scope and approval
No prior issue or maintainer approval. closes#31088 . This is a small, focused bug fix in the OpenCode adapter that follows the same pattern as the merged #29301 (Claude limits through OpenCode keep their reset time) and #18315. I found no existing issue or PR for provider.free-limit or retryAfterMs. #26264 covers the ChatGPT case through OpenCode and is open.
Verification
Adapter test (OpenCode2AdapterV2.test.ts): a provider.free-limit failure with retryAfterMs: 21486000 becomes usage_limit with resetAt: 1970-01-01T05:58:06.000Z on the test clock. The adapter suite passes, 97 of 97.
Client test (OpenCode2Client.test.ts): a session.execution.failed frame keeps retryAfterMs through decoding. The provider package passes, 163 of 163. I did not confirm that this test fails without the fix, because that run hung and I stopped it.
vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, knip, typecheck of 40 packages, and tests beside the changes (3 files, 110 of 110).
Manual: with my free-tier limit active, I sent "hi" in the dev web app and the thread showed "Usage limit reached", "Resets 5:50" and the "Resume at reset" and "Snooze until reset" actions. The 0.1.6 production desktop app, which has no fix, still shows "Provider error" for the same limit.
[SCREENSHOT: after — dev web app showing "Usage limit reached — Resets 5:50" with Resume at reset and Snooze until reset]
[SCREENSHOT: before — 0.1.6 prod app showing "Provider error", same limit]
Not checked: desktop and mobile with the fix. They share the same server-side failure data and the same recovery banner logic, but I only ran the web app. Other OpenCode errors that carry retryAfterMs now also get a resetAt if they are already classified as usage limits (provider.quota non-402 and provider.rate-limit). I didn't test those against real servers.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — OpenCode free-tier failures now carry reset times into the existing usage-limit display and recovery flow. Recovery preferences and product defaults remain unchanged, keeping the change narrowly scoped.

Walkthrough
OpenCode event decoding now preserves retryAfterMs on execution failures. The adapter uses that delay to set the usage-limit failure’s resetAt when no Claude-specific reset time is available. Tests cover event decoding and the resulting failure.

Decoded session.execution.failed events now retain retryAfterMs from the raw error frame. A test checks the decoded event data.

The adapter calculates resetAt from numeric retryAfterMs when no Claude-specific reset time is present. Tests check usage-limit classification, the calculated reset time, and handling of an invalid date range.

The title names the main change: free-tier OpenCode usage limits now show their reset time. The changeset classifies provider.free-limit as usage_limit and restores retryAfterMs so resetAt is set. The title uses the conventional commit form and is concise and specific. It is a fix, not a feature, and the scope (opencode) matches the changed provider code.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It covers the Problem (free-tier limit shows as a plain provider error with no reset time, with a reproduction on OpenCode 2.2.5 and the root causes), the Change (adapter.ts classifies provider.free-limit as usage_limit and derives resetAt from retryAfterMs; OpenCode2Client.ts restores retryAfterMs after decoding), Scope and approval, and Verification (named test files, pass counts, a manual check in the dev web app, and what was not checked). It also names the model and harness, as the template asks. The Scope and approval section is the weakest part. The author states there was no prior issue or maintainer approval and argues the change qualifies as a small, focused bug fix. It also cites a closes #31088 reference that conflicts with the PR number in the objectives (#31089) and with the claim that no existing issue covers this. The template requires an approval link or a clear justification for exemption, and the justification is given, so this does not fail. Verification has one gap the author discloses: the client test was not confirmed to fail without the fix. The author also states that desktop and mobile were not checked. These gaps are disclosed and do not make the description largely incomplete.
