feat(gitlab): resolve overview threads from Summary and Timeline - #30575
A GitLab thread started on the merge request itself, not on a diff line, couldn't be resolved from T3. The adapter dropped position-less discussions, the contract required every review thread to have a file, and Resolve only existed at a thread's line in the Code tab. Closes#30574.
Change
Contract.PullRequestReviewThread.path is nullable. Null means a thread on the change request as a whole. No RPC changes: resolving already takes only the thread id.
GitLab. A discussion with no position and a resolvable first note is now a thread with no file. Single comments, which GitLab doesn't let you resolve, stay plain comments. The existing PUT .../discussions/:id resolves it unchanged.
Web.
Summary and Timeline get a Resolve or Unresolve button on each thread's first comment. It covers every thread, file threads included, so the button doesn't depend on where a thread was started. It shows only where the Code tab would offer Resolve (capabilities.review.resolve and canResolvePullRequestThread). It shows only while the thread is expanded, since a collapsed resolved thread already reads "Resolved". It stays disabled until the refreshed detail arrives. A failure shows the same toast as the Code tab.
The Code tab skips threads with no file.
Timeline labels them "Overview".
"Fix in a thread" prompts point at the change request instead of a file.
Mobile. Mobile already resolves from the discussion screen. Threads with no file are skipped in the diff, show "Overview" in the timeline, and their discussion screen hides "View file diff".
Server. The review guide input labels them "overview".
The button is adapted from my closed#15257. Maria closed that PR for lacking prior approval in #14922. This PR needs the button anyway, because an overview thread has no other place to resolve it.
Independent of #30397, which makes the first note of an open overview thread a finding with a Fix button. Whichever lands second will need a small rebase.
Verification
GitLabPullRequestCli.test.ts: the discussions test now also reads a resolvable overview discussion as a thread with no file, and still drops a single comment. It fails on main.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (36 packages) and tests pass. @t3tools/mobile typecheck passes.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — GitLab overview discussions become visible as threads, with permission-gated Resolve/Unresolve controls in Summary and Timeline. The change reuses existing reversible operations; the two Medium correctness findings remain subject to the separate blocking gate.

Walkthrough
The GitLab adapter now represents eligible positionless discussions as review threads with null paths. Mobile and web views display these threads as overview discussions. Web Summary and Timeline views include controls to resolve and unresolve review threads.
The review-thread contract accepts a null path. The GitLab decoder emits eligible positionless discussions as threads, and tests cover overview threads with null paths and lines.
Mobile and web views use overview labels for pathless threads and omit file-specific actions or grouping. Diff annotation skips pathless threads. Review context and summaries use overview labels.
Resolve threads from Summary and Timeline apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestDetail.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestResolveThreadButton.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestResolveThreadButton.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestSummaryTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestTimelineTab.tsx
Timeline thread data includes the ID and optional resolve permission. Summary and Timeline render a shared resolve control for review threads. The control handles pending commands, refreshes, and errors.

Overview threads are otherwise wired correctly, but a concurrent refresh can briefly re-enable a resolution control before its state is fresh. The impact is bounded and the PR is otherwise low-risk to merge.

Explanation
The title "feat(gitlab): resolve overview threads from Summary and Timeline" matches the main change. The PR makes review thread paths nullable, lets the GitLab adapter return positionless resolvable discussions as overview threads, and adds Resolve/Unresolve buttons to the Summary and Timeline tabs. The title names the GitLab scope and the UI surfaces, and it follows the conventional commit format the template recommends. It does not mention the contract change or the mobile and server labeling, which is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Verification, and a note on approval. The Problem section states the failure: GitLab merge request threads without a diff position cannot be resolved from T3. The Change section lists the contract, GitLab adapter, web, mobile, and server edits. The Verification section lists focused tests, the check run, manual web testing with before and after images, and an explicit note that mobile was not tested on a device. The Scope and approval section is weak. It cites closed PR #15257 and a maintainer discussion, and it links issue #30574 in the Problem section but does not clearly state maintainer approval of this scope. The template asks for a triaged issue or explicit approval comment. The author also says the PR is independent of #30397, which the reviewer may need to check. These gaps are not critical enough to fail the check, but the approval link should be made explicit.
Resolution
Optional improvement: in the Scope and approval section, link the triaged issue #30574 and cite the maintainer approval comment for this direction. Also state why the adapted button does not need the approval that was missing from #15257.

Explanation
Active direct target: #30574. #15257 is closed, so it supplies background only and its requirements are not assessed.
[#30574] Overview threads represented as review threads: packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.ts makes PullRequestReviewThread.path Schema.NullOr(TrimmedNonEmptyString). This removes the required-path blocker. packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/gitLabMergeRequestJson.ts adds an overview branch in decodeDiscussionsJson. A discussion with no position and a resolvable root note becomes a thread with path null and line null. Single, non-resolvable comments are still skipped. GitLabPullRequestCli.test.ts covers the overview thread and the dropped single comment. Replies are grouped as comments of the same thread, so the reply is no longer a separate unrelated card.
[#30574] Resolve and Unresolve from T3: PullRequestResolveThreadButton.tsx calls the existing setThreadResolution command with the thread id and the inverse of isResolved. Summary and Timeline place it on the first comment of each thread. It renders only when capabilities.review.resolve and canResolvePullRequestThread allow it. It stays disabled while the request is pending and until refreshed detail arrives. Failures show an error toast. PullRequestResolveThreadButton.browser.test.tsx covers the disabled-until-refresh behavior and the collapse/reopen case.
Previous uncertainty resolved: the import '@t3tools/client-runtime/pull-request-editing' maps to packages/client-runtime/src/pullRequestEditing.ts in packages/client-runtime/package.json. canResolvePullRequestThread returns detail.viewerPermissions.resolve && thread.canResolve !== false. It does not read path, so a null path does not change its result.
The author's manual check on !5 (Resolve, Resolved state, Unresolve) is not code evidence. It is consistent with the code.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes trace to the nullable thread path, to the Resolve control, or to adapting existing surfaces to a null path. No change was demonstrated to be unrelated to #30574.
Contract (pullRequest.ts): the nullable path is the required type change.
GitLab decoder (gitLabMergeRequestJson.ts) and GitLabPullRequestCli.test.ts: the overview branch is the required adapter change.
Web Summary and Timeline (PullRequestSummaryTab.tsx, PullRequestTimelineTab.tsx, pullRequestDetail.logic.ts, PullRequestResolveThreadButton.tsx): these add the Resolve control and the Overview label. The control also appears on file-line threads where capabilities allow it. This is wider than overview-only threads. The PR states the reason: one control for every thread, so its presence does not depend on where a thread started. The same control and checks are used, so the widening is a connected design choice, not an unrelated change.
Code tab (PullRequestCodeTab.tsx and its browser test): skipping null-path threads keeps them out of file groups. This follows from the nullable type.
Mobile (PullRequestDiscussionScreen.tsx, PullRequestTimeline.tsx, pullRequestDiffComments.ts): these adapt to the null path. Not run on a device; this does not affect scope.
Server (pullRequestReviewGuideInput.ts): the "overview" fallback avoids a null path in review bullets.
Limit of this review: the GitLab decoder body and the browser tests were assessed from the change summary and prior review, not re-read in full at this head.

Describe overview attachments accurately.
When an unresolved overview thread reaches buildFixFindingsHandoff, reviewThreadContext labels it “overview,” but this sentence tells the agent that every attached thread is on a line. Say that attachments have a file location only when one exists. This keeps the “Fix in a thread” prompt consistent with the new overview context.

Cover explicit resolvable: false without changing the overview fixture.
The existing def456 fixture still covers an omitted resolvable field. Add a separate positionless discussion with resolvable: false. Use note ID 6, so the separate overview-reply coverage can add a note to ghi789 without creating an ID collision.

Assert ordered comments for the overview thread.
The overview fixture contains only one note, so it cannot catch a regression that drops or detaches replies. Add a reply note and assert the overview thread’s ordered comment IDs.

The Code tab header counted overview threads it does not render. The Resolve button

Merged current main (f333279) to clear the conflicts with #30397 and the add-to-chat buttons.
decodeDiscussionsJson: a resolvable overview discussion is still a thread with path: null, and if unresolved its first note still goes into overviewFindingIds. The conversation view and the fix-findings handoff already dedupe a note that belongs to a thread, so it is not counted twice.
Summary tab: Resolve and Add to chat both render, Resolve first.
GitLabPullRequestCli.test.ts: kept main's fixture and added the two overview threads (open ghi789, resolved jkl012) to the expected list.
