fix(web): make composer Markdown markers editable - #29928
The rich composer reveals Markdown markers beside styled words, but those markers are widgets: users cannot select or edit them. Inline Markdown now stays real text, with decorations showing its style and hiding inactive markers. Changing ** to * changes bold to italic; deleting the markers removes the style. Fixes#29561.
Caret movement leaves the document and undo/redo unchanged. Formatting shortcuts preserve the selected text and its direction; inline code stays literal and does not affect RTL paragraph direction. This updates the shared web/desktop editor and its user guidance. Mobile uses a separate editor.
Verified with failing-before/passing-after regressions for the reported editing behavior, undo/redo across repeated entry, formatting selection/replacement in both directions, inline-code input, and RTL detection. vp run check:changed passed, including 305 affected tests. A real Linux Chromium client pass confirmed marker deletion changes bold to italic and verified the pending-redo sequence. Windows and the native Electron shell were not separately checked.
Maintainer direction/scope approval has not been obtained for this editor behavior change; this PR is opened for consideration with that limitation explicit.
Reviewed with review-loop: 6 rounds (2 with Claude Opus 5.5 on high, 4 with GPT-6.1 Sol on xhigh). Reviewer verdict: approved on the initial PR head. Subsequent bot findings are fixed with regressions for formatted replacement, backtick-safe code, exact source offsets, and long-line parsing. CodeRabbit withdrew the IME finding after the formatted composition regression confirmed its premise was incorrect.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Markdown formatting markers become editable text in the existing rich-text composer, with corresponding styling and navigation updates. The reported editing regressions remain subject to the separate correctness gate; no additional material exposure was identified.

The rich-text composer now exposes editable Markdown markers near the selection. A plugin manages marker display, conversion, formatting shortcuts, and caret movement. Document construction, inline-code parsing and serialization, text-direction handling, browser tests, styles, and user guidance were updated.

Summary
Build and parse inline Markdown source apps/web/src/composer-rich-text.ts, apps/web/src/composer-rich-text-doc.ts, apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx
Document builders support inlineSource and reconstruct Markdown delimiters as unmarked text. The parser tracks source offsets, can disable single-underscore italics, and supports variable-length code delimiters. The editor enables inline source for rich-text document construction and Markdown insertion.
A plugin displays and converts Markdown markers, handles formatting shortcuts and caret movement, and updates marker decorations. The editor registers the plugin and checks formatted source ranges when inserting surrounding characters. Marker styles allow selection and hide inactive markers.
Validate editing and text direction apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.input.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/composer-markdown-source.test.ts, apps/web/src/composer-text-direction.ts, apps/web/src/composer-text-direction.test.ts, docs/user/composer.md
Browser tests cover marker editing, code delimiters, composition, selection direction, caret movement, and undo/redo. A test checks plugin behavior on a 150,000-character source line. Text-direction extraction separates blocks and hard breaks and excludes inline-code spans. Composer guidance describes when editable markers appear.
The implementation fix is present, but a small formula-focused regression case is still needed to protect the editable composer from recurrence.

Explanation
Issue #29561 is open and directly linked. Its coding requirement is that Markdown markers shown beside styled text in the rich composer be selectable and editable. Changing ** to * must switch bold to italic. Deleting markers must remove the formatting. The reviewed head meets this requirement. ComposerMarkdownSourcePlugin in apps/web/src/composer-markdown-source.ts runs sourceTransaction in appendTransaction after document-changing transactions. This turns styled ranges into literal marker text with no formatting marks, so markers are real document text. decorate then applies composer-rich-marker and formatting decorations. It hides only markers that do not touch the active selection, and it expands the active range to the surrounding word. fold re-parses the source with parseInlineMarkdown, so an edited delimiter changes the mark. Removing a delimiter removes the mark. Caret movement across markers, formatting shortcuts, and code-input handling are implemented in the same plugin. The issue does not require mobile support. The author reports browser and unit regressions for these behaviors. I did not run those tests. The verdict rests on the source of the plugin and the summary of its tests. The Markdown-marker editing, deletion, typing, undo/redo, and caret-movement tests are part of the changed test file.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes support issue #29561 and its implementation. composer-markdown-source.ts contains the editable-marker plugin, its key handling, and its history behavior. ComposerMarkersExtension in ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx replaces the old decoration plugin with this plugin. composer-rich-text.ts and composer-rich-text-doc.ts change inline parsing and serialization so that source markers round-trip exactly. These include backtick run lengths, source offsets, and inlineCodeDelimiters. composer-text-direction.ts excludes code-marked text from direction detection. This is required because the markers are now real text. Those direction changes match the PR description's claim that inline code does not change RTL paragraph direction. index.css and docs/user/composer.md update the marker display and the user guidance for the new behavior. The browser tests and the long-line regression test cover this behavior. The change applies to the shared web/desktop editor only, and the summary reports no mobile changes. Maintainer approval is a process matter and does not affect this assessment. The author notes a deferred performance follow-up. That follow-up is not a change in this pull request.

Avoid reparsing every textblock for selection-only transactions.
apply reparses every eligible textblock after each selection change. parseSource allocates one object per source character and runs the math and Markdown parsers for the complete block. Caret movement in a long draft can therefore repeat full-draft work even when only the old and new selection ranges need updated decorations.
Cache parsed pieces by immutable textblock node, with offsets relative to the block start. For selection-only transactions, reuse decorations for unaffected blocks and rebuild only blocks intersecting the previous or new selection. Reparse changed nodes when the document changes.

Update the decoration-building logic around parseSource to cache parsed pieces
by immutable textblock node with offsets relative to each block. On
selection-only transactions, reuse decorations for unaffected blocks and rebuild
only blocks intersecting the previous or new selection; when the document
changes, reparse changed nodes while preserving correct decoration positions.

Follow-up Comments
Replace the spread push calls in parseSource with index loops.

Replace the spread push calls in parseSource with index loops.
groups.push(...units.slice(...)) passes each unit as a separate argument. A textblock with a very long line can produce enough units to exceed the engine's argument limit, which throws RangeError. decorate calls parseSource for every textblock on initialization and on document or selection changes, so the error can interrupt editor state updates for that draft. The repository search found no cap on textblock length.

Review comment at @apps/web/src/composer-markdown-source.ts at line 87:
In parseSource, replace both groups.push calls that spread units.slice results
with index-based loops that append each unit individually. Preserve the existing
formula.start boundary and trailing-units range so group contents and order
remain unchanged without passing a large argument list.

Deferring the parsed-block caching nit to a measured performance follow-up. It would add cache/invalidation state, and no latency regression measurement is supplied. This PR stays focused on editable markers; selection-only changes already leave the document and undo history unchanged.
Fixed the long-line argument-limit finding in 820208c. Both spread pushes now append units with index loops. The 150,000-character regression throws RangeError before the fix and passes afterward through plugin-state initialization and caret movement. vp run check:changed passes, including 305 affected tests. Large-draft rendering latency remains a separate profiling follow-up.
This input has no formula, so it does not exercise the changed copy at Line 87 of composer-markdown-source.ts. Add a case such as a 150,000-character prefix followed by $b$. It would catch the same argument-limit regression in that copy.

Add a long-prefix case to the composer Markdown source tests with a formula
after the prefix, and assert the existing expected formula handling; use the
changed copy in composer-markdown-source.ts as the behavior under test.
