The marketing star count now refreshes at build time with one decimal of precision, rounded down. A five-second timeout bounds the request. This remains a static site with no browser star-count API requests.

Closes #29176

Merged current main and preserved its optional GitHub authentication, counts below 1,000 and production failure guard. Failed production requests fail the build rather than publishing a stale count; development can still render with the contributor's fallback.

Verification on de978df12d57406aaea8534d42389cc4ecb8ac48: Blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed formatting, lint, knip, typecheck and 10 tests. The focused star-count suite passed 9 tests and the production build generated 7 pages. A production-failure regression test failed before the guard was restored and passed afterward. Two independent scoped reviews approved this head.

Chrome against the actual Astro app showed 41.8k on home and download, no page errors, no browser star-count request, and no overflow at 320px. Vercel networking and the real five-second timeout path remain unverified.

Current main:

main header showing 41k+

Merged PR:

merged header showing 41.8k

Written by gpt-6.1-sol through the Codex harness on behalf of Maria.

The count was a hardcoded string that had to be bumped by hand and had
drifted to 31k+ while the repository passed 38.9k stars. Read it from the
GitHub API at build time, with a fallback so a failed request cannot fail
a deploy.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The marketing site now refreshes its displayed GitHub star count at build time. The public API request has a timeout and fallback, with effects confined to static marketing labels.

Walkthrough

The marketing site now loads the repository’s GitHub star count through an API lookup. The lookup formats valid counts and uses a fallback when the request fails outside production.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, scope, linked issue, verification results, screenshots, and known unverified areas. It does not use the template headings, but it contains the required information and is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #29176 requires the marketing site to show a star count close to the repository count. At head de978df, apps/marketing/src/lib/site.ts sets MARKETING_STATS.githubStars from fetchGitHubStars() at build time. fetchGitHubStars() in apps/marketing/src/lib/githubStars.ts requests https://api.github.com/repos/pingdotgg/t3code, reads stargazers_count, and formats it. Counts of 1,000 or more round down to one decimal in thousands. Counts below 1,000 stay integers. A five-second AbortSignal.timeout bounds the request. githubStars.test.ts covers formatting for 999, 38,947, 40,199, 39,000 and 120,000 stars. It also covers the production failure rejection, and fallback for a rate-limit response, a missing count and a network failure. The objectives summary describes a build-time warning and 38.9k fallback on production failure. The current code and the current PR description differ on this point. Production failures now throw, so the build fails instead of publishing a stale count. Current intent governs, and this behavior does not conflict with the issue. The issue does not require a specific update mechanism. The site stays static because the request runs during the build. The timeout path has no automated test. This does not block the requirement, but the timeout behavior is unverified in automated tests.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR changes are limited to apps/marketing. The change set, taken from the whole-PR summary, comprises githubStars.ts (the new fetch and formatting helper), githubStars.test.ts (focused tests), site.ts (replaces the file-local star-count code with a call to the helper), and package.json (adds a test script that runs vp test run). Each change supports the star-count fix or its automated verification. No unrelated workflow, product-area behavior or browser-side star-count request appears in the changes. The file list comes from the AI-generated summary. I did not run a full whole-PR diff to confirm that no other file changed.

Nitpick Add a non-round live-count fixture whose expected value differs from the fallback.

12-22: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a non-round live-count fixture whose expected value differs from the fallback.

The two non-round rows, 38_947 and 38_999, expect "38.9k", which is the same string as FALLBACK_STARS. The round rows (39_000, 120_000) do not exercise rounding on a non-round value. If fetchGitHubStars fell back for every non-round live count, every test in this file would still pass. The fallback rows also use FALLBACK, so they cannot show that a live count was read. Adding a non-round row with a distinct expected value makes the live path observable in the formatting test.

Nitpick Add a timeout-path test that does not wait five real seconds.

24-42: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Add a timeout-path test that does not wait five real seconds.

The current fallback cases reject or settle before AbortSignal.timeout(REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS) can fire. A regression that removes the timeout signal would not fail any test. The added case should fail when the request signal is missing or ignored.

The abort test should not wait on the real five-second timeout. The root testTimeout: 60_000 does not apply to apps/marketing's own test script, so a real five-second wait can race the default test timeout. Per-test timeout overrides are not allowed by repository testing rules. The test below uses an already-aborted signal instead.

Add a timeout-path test around fetchGitHubStars using an already-aborted signal
so it completes without waiting for the real timeout. Make the fetch stub reject
when the request signal is aborted and otherwise return a valid star count, then
assert the fallback result; this must fail if fetchGitHubStars omits or ignores
the request signal.

The non-round rows expected the same string as the fallback, so they
would still pass if every live count fell back.

CodeRabbit follow-ups:

  • Non-round count matching the fallback: fixed. One formatting row now expects 40.1k, so it can't pass by falling back.
  • Timeout-path test: not adding it. The finding is correct that nothing covers the timeout, but the suggested test mocks AbortSignal.timeout and then checks that same signal in a stub, which is the kind of mock-mirroring test AGENTS.md says to leave out. The PR description lists this path as not tested.

Cover the timeout-triggered fallback in githubStars.test.ts.

MARKETING_STATS awaits fetchGitHubStars() during the marketing build. The current network-failure case rejects fetch without using its signal, so it passes even if the five-second timeout is removed or not passed to fetch. Add a timeout-specific case that asserts the signal and the 5_000 duration, then rejects when that signal aborts.

merged current main without rebasing and resolved the duplicate star-count lookup. kept the contributor's decimal formatting, five-second timeout and development fallback. preserved main's optional github authentication, counts below 1,000 and production failure guard, so failed production requests cannot publish a stale fallback.

verified head de978df12d57406aaea8534d42389cc4ecb8ac48:

  • blacksmith: vp run check:changed github/main passed format, lint, knip, typecheck and 10 tests. focused star-count tests: 9 passed. production build: 7 pages built.
  • the production failure test failed before restoring the guard and passed afterward.
  • real astro app in chrome: home/download show 41.8k, no browser star api requests or page errors; 320px has no overflow.
  • two independent scoped reviews approved this head.

timeout wiring test suggestion remains declined: mocking the timeout signal and asserting that same signal mirrors the implementation. the production timeout path and vercel networking remain unverified.
