feat(worktrees): optionally create worktrees with git-worktree-fast on macOS - #28727
On large repositories, most of the time T3 spends creating a worktree goes into git worktree add writing every tracked file. On T3 Code's own repository (29,079 files), each new thread worktree takes about 6.8 s on an M3 Ultra. On macOS, git-worktree-fast is a drop-in for git worktree add that clones a commit the user prepared earlier from an APFS copy-on-write cache. It produces ordinary linked worktrees: they appear in git worktree list and git worktree remove removes them. T3 has no way to use it.
Speed comparison
Machine and inputs: M3 Ultra, macOS 27.2, APFS, Git 2.54.0 (Apple Git-157), and git-worktree-fast 0.1.1 at the pinned revision. The repository is a local clone of T3 Code at 1d626d02d9 (29,079 tracked files). Its commit was prepared once with git worktree-fast prepare (4.3 s). The two modes ran in alternation, and every worktree-fast run hit the cache (checked with WORKTREE_FAST_TRACE=1).
End to end, through T3's GitVcsDriver.createWorktree. This includes branch creation, the add, and the post-checkout steps. There were 10 runs per mode after a warm-up, and worktrees were removed between runs.

That's about 4.3× faster per new thread worktree.

A commit that hasn't been prepared costs the same as stock Git, because git-worktree-fast hands it to Git's checkout.
Change
Setting. A per-machine server setting, enableWorktreeFast, defaults to false. It decodes to false for existing settings.json files, so current behavior is unchanged unless the user turns it on.
Availability. It travels through the existing environment capabilities channel. macOS servers add worktreeFast: { installed } to the descriptor, and installed comes from git worktree-fast --version exiting 0. The probe result is cached for a minute, so installing the tool shows up after a reload without a server restart. Other platforms omit the capability, so the option is never offered there. Older servers omit it as well.
Creation.GitVcsDriverCore.createWorktree builds the same argument list it always has and swaps only the subcommand when the setting is on and the host is macOS:
The new path runs git -c checkout.workers=N worktree-fast add -- PATH REF.
Every creation path (new thread worktrees, PR threads, MCP, rollback restores) already goes through GitManager, which now passes the setting alongside worktreesDirectory. Before the fast attempt, the driver creates the destination's parent folder. The bundled 0.2.0 does this itself, but a git-worktree-fast before 0.2.0 on the user's PATH (which wins over the bundled copy) hands a missing parent to Git's slow checkout instead of using its cache.
Fallback. If git worktree-fast add fails for any reason (tool missing at runtime, unsupported setup, a Git error), the driver logs a warning and runs stock git worktree add. That retry happens only when the failed attempt left nothing at the destination; otherwise the original error is reported, so a leftover folder can't turn into a misleading "already exists" error. Removal still uses stock Git.
Bundled with the macOS desktop app, so most users don't need to install anything:
Pin.native/worktree-fast/source.json pins the upstream repository and commit.
Build. On macOS, scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts gets a stageWorktreeFast step that runs cargo install --locked --git … --rev … for each Rust target (lipo'd for universal builds). It ships the binary as the worktree-fast/git-worktree-fast extra resource, excluded from the asar like the other helpers, and the macOS preflight now requires cargo unless both Rust helpers are reused.
CI.release-desktop.yml caches the binary per Rust target, keyed on source.json. Rust setup also runs on a cache miss, and T3CODE_DESKTOP_REUSE_WORKTREE_FAST skips the build on a hit, matching how the Linux capture helpers work.
Runtime. The desktop backend passes worktreeFastPath to the server through the bootstrap config, the same way resourceMonitorPath travels. The server appends that folder to PATH for the probe and for git worktree-fast add, so a copy the user installed still takes precedence.
License.third-party-licenses.config.json gets an MIT notice for git-worktree-fast.
No change for other installs.npx t3 and the standalone CLI don't bundle it; on those, the settings row shows the install command.
Settings UI. Settings → Worktrees → Creation → Advanced has a new Use git-worktree-fast switch, next to Submodules. It shows only for machine scope, and only when every selected machine reports the capability, matching Worktree location. When the tool is missing, the switch is disabled (it can still be turned off) and the row shows cargo install --locked --git https://github.com/mweinbach/worktree-fast.git git-worktree-fast. It is also in settings search, and docs/user/project-settings.md gets a short section.
Surfaces I left alone: mobile's server controls and the MCP t3_environment_preferences_update tool. Neither exposes Worktree location either, and changing the MCP schema would need evals. The option doesn't run git worktree-fast prepare or auto enable for the user. Preparing commits is the user's choice because it uses disk space, and the setting's description and the user docs point to it.
One thing to know: git-worktree-fast keys its cache on the repository's core.*, checkout.*, filter.* and submodule.* Git config. Changing that config after preparing a commit causes a miss, which then costs the same as stock Git.
Scope and approval
There is no prior issue or discussion for this. I'm submitting it as a focused configuration option for an established capability. T3 already creates worktrees with git worktree add; this option only chooses which command performs that checkout, keeps the same arguments and resulting worktree, and is off by default. Bundling the binary is what makes the option usable without a separate Rust toolchain install. If maintainers would rather discuss direction first, or would like bundling split into its own PR, I'm happy to do either.
Verification
Focused tests:
packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts: an empty settings file decodes enableWorktreeFast to false, and a stored true is kept.
apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.test.ts: the capability is { installed: true } on macOS when the tool is on PATH, and also when it is found only in the bundled folder. It is { installed: false } when the tool is missing, and absent on Linux.
apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts: a table over a stubbed spawner. On macOS with the setting on:
fast add succeeds: only worktree-fast add runs;
fast add fails: worktree add runs next and the worktree is created;
fast add fails and leaves a folder: the error is returned and nothing is retried.
With the setting off, or on Linux, only worktree add runs. Every worktree-fast invocation receives PATH followed by the bundled folder.
apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts: a packaged resources/worktree-fast/git-worktree-fast reaches bootstrap.worktreeFastPath on macOS and is not passed on Linux.
vp run check:changed passes format, lint, knip, and typecheck across 39 packages, and all changed and nearby tests pass except two. Those two fail identically on unmodified main on macOS because temp paths resolve to /private/var: "publishes proven install ownership only for manually updated servers" and "keeps generated worktree folders short without changing long branch names".
Manual checks with throwaway tests that weren't committed:
Build step.stageWorktreeFast with the arm64 target, both building via cargo install and reusing the cached output, staged an executable (mode 755) that reported git-worktree-fast 0.1.1 at the original pin. After the bump to 0.2.0 (0bde628, which adds auto enable), the same cargo install --locked --git … --rev … --target aarch64-apple-darwin builds and reports git-worktree-fast 0.2.0.
Bundled binary only. With ~/.cargo/bin removed from PATH and worktreeFastPath pointing at the built binary, the real driver created a worktree on the T3 Code clone and git-worktree-fast reported created from APFS checkout cache.
Installed binary. A worktree created through the driver with the installed binary showed in git worktree list with a clean status, and git worktree remove removed it.
Fallback. With the binary unreachable, the driver logged the fallback and created the worktree with stock Git.
Settings UI. Against a local dev server, the toggle persisted "enableWorktreeFast": true. For the not-installed capture, I started the server with git-worktree-fast hidden from its PATH and from login-shell PATH hydration.

A signed and notarized DMG from the release workflow. The workflow changes mirror the existing capture-helper cache and haven't run in CI.
Creating a thread worktree from the full UI with a real provider turn.
Mobile.
A non-APFS destination volume; git-worktree-fast hands those to stock Git itself.
Maintainer follow-up: rebased onto main, pinned the Settings install command to the revision in native/worktree-fast/source.json (it pointed at upstream HEAD), and shortened the setting description for the new description-length lint rule. Proved with vp run check:changed (all pass) and a web typecheck. Reviewed with sol-loop: 1 pass with GPT-6.1 Sol. Sol verdict: approved.

This change packages git-worktree-fast for macOS, passes its executable path through desktop bootstrap, and reports tool availability. It adds a server setting and settings UI. When enabled on macOS, worktree creation tries the fast command and falls back to regular Git if a failed attempt leaves no destination.

…n macOS
Adds a per-machine Use git-worktree-fast setting under Settings > Worktrees > Advanced. macOS servers report whether the tool is installed through the environment capabilities, and the row explains how to install it when it is missing. When enabled, worktree creation runs git worktree-fast add with the same arguments as git worktree add and falls back to git worktree add if it fails.
Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
The macOS desktop build installs the git-worktree-fast revision pinned in native/worktree-fast/source.json and ships it as an extra resource. The desktop backend passes its path to the server, which searches it after PATH when probing availability and creating worktrees, so the option works without a separate install while a user's own install still wins. Release CI caches the built binary per Rust target.

cargo install --locked --git https://github.com/mweinbach/worktree-fast.git git-worktree-fast. It is also in settings search, anddocs/user/project-settings.mdgets a short section.Surfaces I left alone: mobile's server controls and the MCP
t3_environment_preferences_updatetool. Neither exposes Worktree location either, and changing the MCP schema would need evals. The option doesn't rungit worktree-fast prepareorauto enablefor the user. Preparing commits is the user's choice because it uses disk space, and the setting's description and the user docs point to it.One thing to know: git-worktree-fast keys its cache on the repository's
core.*,checkout.*,filter.*andsubmodule.*Git config. Changing that config after preparing a commit causes a miss, which then costs the same as stock Git.Scope and approval
There is no prior issue or discussion for this. I'm submitting it as a focused configuration option for an established capability. T3 already creates worktrees with
git worktree add; this option only chooses which command performs that checkout, keeps the same arguments and resulting worktree, and is off by default. Bundling the binary is what makes the option usable without a separate Rust toolchain install. If maintainers would rather discuss direction first, or would like bundling split into its own PR, I'm happy to do either.Verification
Focused tests:
