feat(server): Claude and Codex threads can drive remote desktops through agentcast - #28050
Agents in T3 Code cannot use another PC's desktop without an RDP viewer, or Computer Use running on that PC. agentcast is a small host plus an MCP server for this. It reads UI trees and sends background input over SSH. It refuses on a locked PC or a UAC prompt. It journals every action, so a lost reply never runs twice. T3 Code needs a way to attach it to threads, with approvals that follow the thread's access mode.
Change
When T3CODE_AGENTCAST_MAIN points at agentcast's CLI, Claude and Codex sessions get an agentcast stdio MCP server beside t3-code. When it is unset, nothing changes. The server runs on the Node runtime that resolveNodeExecutable finds, as for the device tools, so it also works from the packaged CLI.
Full access pre-approves all agentcast tools. Other modes pre-approve only the read-only tools. act, launch, clipboard, files and exec go through the provider's own approval flow. Plan mode (read-only sandbox) gets only the read-only tools.
Codex reads MCP config only when it loads a thread. A thread/resume of a loaded thread keeps the old config. So when the mode crosses full access, the Codex adapter unsubscribes the thread first, both when T3 resumes it and before a turn with no resume. It records the new approvals only after Codex loads them, and it does the same after fork and rollback.
Scope and approval
Draft: agentcast is still early. Requested by Theo. It is opt-in and off by default. agentcast lives in the private repo t3dotgg/agentcast, branch step1. Its docs/t3code.md has the setup, and research/08-benchmark.md has the comparison with Cua's own MCP server.
This overlaps the Cua stack (#16527 to #16532). #16528 attaches Cua's own MCP server (cua-driver mcp) to every provider, and that server is the benchmark's baseline. Against it, with the same Cua 0.38 engine, agentcast took 17 to 43% fewer calls and 26 to 54% less time (six pairs per agent, Claude Code and Codex). It also refused on a locked PC and a UAC prompt, where Cua's server read through them. This PR takes the independent path: agentcast is a separate MCP server for desktops reached over SSH, and it does not depend on that stack. Later, #16528 could attach agentcast mcp with a local host in place of cua-driver mcp.
Verification
Replay test, one Codex thread:
It starts in full access.
T3 resumes it in approval-required mode. The first unsubscribe fails, and the retry unsubscribes again.
A later turn goes back to full access with no resume, and the adapter reloads the thread itself.
The test fails with the earlier order, which recorded approvals before the unload.
agentcastMcp.test.ts covers approvals per mode and the read-only sandbox.
After the rebase onto current main, typecheck is clean, and CodexAdapterV2, ClaudeAdapterV2 and agentcastMcp tests pass (404 tests).
I ran the patched dev app with isolated data (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0) against a Windows 11 test VM, with one thread per provider. I made these runs before the rebase onto current main:

Not checked in the app: auto-accept-edits and auto. In those modes Codex runs a "prompt" MCP tool without asking (approval policy on-request), but Claude asks.

Walkthrough
Agentcast MCP configuration is added for Claude and Codex. Tool approvals depend on runtime settings, and Codex reloads threads when Agentcast approval settings change. NodeRuntimeFeature also accepts Remote desktops.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds explicitly opt-in remote desktop tools for Claude and Codex, with write access governed by runtime approval settings. Unconfigured installations retain existing behavior, and Codex reloads tool permissions when access settings change.

Review finding (Macroscope): in the single-file (Node SEA) CLI build, process.execPath is the t3
binary, so agentcast's MCP server did not start. The adapters now resolve the runtime once with
resolveNodeExecutable, as the device tools do: the server's own Node or Electron binary, or the
node on PATH in a packaged build. With none, agentcast stays off and a warning is logged.

Disallow Agentcast write tools in Plan mode.
The Agentcast server is registered with all of its tools. allowedTools adds only read-only tools, but it controls pre-approval, not availability. In Plan mode, canUseTool prompts for other tools and allows them after approval. A user can therefore approve and execute an Agentcast write, which violates the requirement that Plan mode expose only read-only tools.
Pass the Agentcast write-tool names through disallowedTools for Plan-mode queries. Keep the existing read-only allowedTools entries.

Agentcast write tools can skip approval when full access is downgraded or in Plan mode.
fullAccess comes from runtimeMode === "full-access". The effective query policy can differ from the runtime mode:
queryPolicyForTurn downgrades bypassPermissions to auto or default when managed settings disable bypass.
An explicit approvalPolicy other than "never" gives default.
Plan mode gives plan.
In each case claudeMcpQueryOverrides still adds mcp__agentcast__* to allowedTools. The desktop-control write tools (act, launch, clipboard, files, exec) then run without the approval the user expects. The downgrade notice says "Full access is running with approval checks", but these tools skip those checks.
Derive fullAccess from the effective permission mode, which openQuery already has.

Pass interactionMode to the Codex approval helper so Plan mode uses the read-only tool set.
agentcastCodexApprovals reads only runtimeMode and sandboxPolicy. A full-access thread returns { default_tools_approval_mode: "approve" } and sets no enabled_tools restriction, whatever its interactionMode. In Plan mode, act, launch, clipboard, files, and exec are therefore enabled and approved by default. The PR description states that Plan mode receives only read-only tools, so this configuration does not match the stated contract.
The approvals key is built from this helper's output. A thread that is already loaded in full-access mode and then switched to Plan keeps its approve-all configuration, because the key does not change. Passing interactionMode into the helper changes the key. unloadForAgentcastApprovals then unloads the thread, and startNativeTurn resumes it with the read-only configuration before the next turn starts.
