fix(client-runtime): a resumed thread renders its catch-up once instead of stepping through stale states - #27401
When an open thread resumes from its saved cursor, the server replays the missed events in several frames before its completion marker. The client applied each frame as its own state update. The thread visibly stepped through intermediate states, and every frame re-rendered the thread screen.
Fix
Items received before the completion marker are held and applied in one state update when the marker arrives. Live events after the marker still apply as they arrive. A restarted attempt keeps the held items: its replay from the unchanged cursor repeats them, and already applied sequences are skipped. The change is in packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts.
Why no prior issue
This is a focused fix (32 lines of code) for an obvious rendering defect: showing states the thread has already moved past. It only changes when replayed events become visible.
Verification
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts: "publishes a 20-event catch-up as one state change at its marker" replaces "keeps replayed updates synchronizing until the completion marker arrives". It feeds 20 replayed events as separate frames, then the marker, and expects exactly one state change, already live with the final title. A live event after the marker must still apply at once. It fails on main and passes with the fix.
iOS Simulator, Release build of v0.1.5 with and without this commit, interleaved, 6 runs each. Open a thread and send a prompt that makes 12 separate tool calls with text after each. Background the app 4 s later, suspend it, kill the socket, and foreground after 50 s once the turn has finished.
Distinct feed states after foreground: 6 [5–6] → 2 [1–2]. One of the two is a pre-suspension update the app renders as it resumes; the catch-up itself lands in one update.
Thread React commits: 86 → 65.
Thread commit time: 271 → 218 ms.
Time to the final state: 1107 → 903 ms median, within the spread.
Recording below: iOS Simulator, dev client (Debug JS), local dev server, main at 8970a32 on the left and this commit on the right. A Replay (dev) turn of 12 echo steps finishes while the app is suspended with its socket dropped. Both first show the stale feed while reconnecting. main then shows an intermediate state (Step 6 and part of 7, still "Working") for 0.3–0.4 s before the finished turn, in 4 of 4 runs. With the fix the feed goes straight to the finished turn, in 3 of 3 runs. The clip repeats the catch-up second at 4x slower. This short turn shows one intermediate state where the longer Release-build turns above showed four or five.
A resumed thread subscription applied each replayed frame separately, so
the thread screen re-rendered through stale intermediate states until the
completion marker arrived. Hold items until the marker and reduce them in
one state update; live events after it still apply as they arrive.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Thread catch-up is buffered until synchronization completes to avoid rendering stale intermediate states. …s held catch-up
Each retry before the completion marker replays the same items from the
unmoved cursor, so keeping the held items grew the buffer by one replay
per retry.

Walkthrough
Thread subscriptions now tag stream values with the input for each subscription attempt. The thread state buffers items by attempt and applies them at a synchronization marker. Tests cover replay updates and replacement races.
The RPC client passes subscription input to stream mappers and adds subscribeDynamicWithInput. The thread subscription records each input as the current attempt.
Buffer and process catch-up items packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts
The thread state buffers items per attempt, ignores items from superseded attempts, and applies buffered items when a synchronization marker arrives. Tests check batched replay updates and replacement races.

Claude's video doesn't do a good job showing this but when catching up on a thread with a lot of updates it can take a while and be noticeably distracting.
Stream.switchMap still delivers values an old attempt buffered after the
next attempt's makeInput ran, and a foreground resubscribe reuses the
session. Since a new attempt clears the held catch-up, a late event and
completion marker from the replaced attempt could then apply without the
dropped prefix and advance the cursor past it, so the next attempt skipped
those events. A late snapshot could also regress the cursor.
Tag thread stream values with their attempt's input
(subscribeDynamicWithInput) and drop items from any other attempt.
Starting an attempt and receiving items both run under applyLock, so a
batch lands wholly before or after an attempt starts.
Also take the observer's replayed initial state before clearing the queue
in the 20-event catch-up test, so it cannot be read as the first change.

merged current main into the branch (merge commit, no rebase) to clear the conflict in packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts. main's #30679 made the per-batch apply path untraced, so receiveItems (which replaces applyItems) now uses Effect.fnUntraced with the same comment.
two test-only adjustments in threads-sync.test.ts for "does not apply a replaced attempt's late marker without its dropped prefix":
the untraced path does fewer ops per batch, so MaxOpsBeforeYield 10 no longer let the new attempt start before the old marker landed. it is now 5. the test still fails with the attempt guard removed (['pending'] vs ['resolved']).
no change to the fix itself. vp run check:changed and the two client-runtime test files pass on a testbox (60/60, three runs). both earlier bot findings were already addressed in cd452be.

created real git projects and threads through the web ui. used codex gpt-6.1-sol to run eight separate terminal commands, disconnected the app websocket for 60 seconds while the turn finished, then reconnected. both recordings use the same prompt and 6x browser cpu throttling during reconnect. websocket inspection confirmed event replay; the client observer reads the app's existing thread-state atom without changing it.
main published five intermediate replay projections, then the live marker. the pr published the replay once, already live with the completed turn. persisted provider results confirmed all eight commands completed on both builds.
nearby behavior passed: a larger 20-command turn used the bounded snapshot fallback; a live follow-up streamed text and ran pwd and git status --short; reloading restored both completed turns. the after video includes the follow-up and reload. no latency or speedup claim is made.
blacksmith-check ran vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/client.test.ts: 55 passed. github currently reports 21 successful checks and 7 skipped, with no pending or failed checks. no source changes or pushes were needed.
native ios/android, the electron shell, relay/tunnel connections, other providers, and forced interruption during an in-progress replay were not exercised on this linux vm. the focused tests cover replaced subscription attempts, but that race was not reproduced through the browser.
