feat(cli): t3 thread start and send take --effort - #27189
t3 thread start can pick a provider and model but not reasoning effort, and t3 thread send cannot change it. A script that wants some threads on high effort and others on low has to open each thread in the app and change effort by hand. The composer and the MCP tools (modelSelection.options) already support effort; the CLI just does not expose it.
Change
t3 thread start --effort <level> sets effort on the new thread. It goes with --provider and --model, because the level list depends on the model.
t3 thread send --effort <level> sets the thread's effort through t3_thread_configure, then sends. The level applies to that message and later turns, like changing it in the composer. A run already in progress keeps its own effort.
Providers name the option differently (Codex reasoningEffort, Claude effort, OpenCode variant, and so on). The CLI reads the model's options from orchestrator_capabilities and sets the first one in REASONING_EFFORT_OPTION_IDS, the list the web and mobile clients already use to show effort. An unknown level, a model without effort, or a model the server does not list fails before anything is created or sent, and names the accepted levels.
REASONING_EFFORT_OPTION_IDS moves from @t3tools/client-runtime to @t3tools/shared/model so the server can use the same list. Web, mobile, and client-runtime import it from there. No behavior change for them.
One paragraph in docs/user/outside-agents.md.
Scope and approval
There is no prior discussion. I think this fits the "focused configuration option for an established capability" route: effort selection already exists in the composer and in the MCP launch and configure tools, and t3 thread start already takes --provider and --model. The flag only sets that existing model option from the CLI. It adds no new workflow and changes no defaults. Happy to open an Ideas discussion instead if you prefer.
Verification
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (31 packages), tests, and React compiler checks all pass.
New tests in apps/server/src/cli/thread.test.ts cover the option id per provider (Codex reasoningEffort replaced while fastMode stays, Claude effort) and the three failure messages.
Manual run against a dev server in the worktree (its own .t3, not the live install), with a scratch project:
--effort without --model, an unknown level for Codex and Claude, and an unknown model each exit 1 with a clear message, and no thread is created.
start --provider claudeAgent --model claude-haiku-5-5 --effort low --wait completed. The Claude SDK query options logged "effort":"low".
The shared model module now exports reasoning-effort option identifiers. The thread CLI adds --effort support to start and send, validates levels against model capabilities, and applies the selected option to the thread model configuration.
The CLI adds effort selection for thread start and send. It checks the selected model’s advertised option and accepted values, updates the model selection, and reports errors for unavailable models or effort levels. Tests cover these cases, and the user guide documents the flags.

Using send --effort can undo another client’s concurrent model or option change, potentially sending on the wrong model. Prevent that overwrite before merging.

Explanation
The title "feat(cli): t3 thread start and send take --effort" matches the main change. The PR adds an --effort option to t3 thread start and t3 thread send, and the title names both commands and the flag. It is a conventional-commit style title in plain language, and it is 49 characters long.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains why the CLI needs an effort option. The Change section lists the start and send behavior, the option lookup, the moved constant, and the docs paragraph. The Scope and approval section states there was no prior discussion and argues for the focused-configuration route. The Verification section lists the unit tests, the manual runs with observed results, the unchecked providers, and the model and harness used. The description does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval, which the template asks for. The template's approval requirement is the main gap, but the rest of the description is complete.

Preserve concurrent thread configuration changes.
If another client changes the model or an unrelated option after this command reads modelSelection, the configure call writes the older entire selection. The server replaces the stored selection with that value. The CLI can therefore undo the other change and send the message on the older model. Make the effort update conditional on the selection version, or apply it atomically to the server’s current selection. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Not changing this one. The race is real but small: between the read and the write, the CLI makes only one orchestrator_capabilities call, so another client would have to change the same thread's model within those few milliseconds. t3_thread_configure has no version or compare-and-set input, so any MCP agent that edits options has the same read-then-write pattern today. Making it atomic would need a server-side change to the configure tool (a partial option update or an expected-selection check), which is outside this CLI-only PR. Happy to do that as a follow-up if maintainers want it.

@Fushi500 Understood. I won’t press for a change in this PR. The race remains unresolved, but a server-side follow-up can address it across MCP clients.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for an atomic option update or an expected-selection check in t3_thread_configure?
