feat(web): configure terminal copy and paste shortcuts - #26836
Terminal Copy and Paste already work, but Settings → Keybindings cannot assign alternate shortcuts to those actions. For example, Linux users cannot configure Super+C / Super+V specifically while the terminal has focus.
Change
Expose unbound terminal.copy and terminal.paste commands through the existing keybinding settings. Matching terminal keydowns use the existing selection-copy and permission-checked paste actions. Copy without a selection leaves the clipboard alone. Document meta+c / meta+v with when: terminalFocus.
Composition must be checked before the host shortcut callback so these new configurable actions cannot intercept IME input. The existing surface regression now checks composition flags, key code 229 and internal composition state.
Scope and approval
This fits CONTRIBUTING.md's focused configuration route: terminal selection-copy and clipboard-paste are established capabilities; the option only chooses additional keys for those same actions. Both commands are unbound by default. Existing platform shortcuts, shell Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V, and product defaults are unchanged. No Cut, new clipboard workflow, provider behavior or mobile gesture is added.
Verification
vp run check:changed, with subprocesses serialized, typecheck concurrency 1 and tests limited to one worker: format, lint, file/dependency audit, 32 affected package typechecks, and 74 tests in four files passed. The export audit hit a worker heap limit; its exact command then passed separately with one available CPU/worker and a 3072 MiB Node heap. The combined invocation itself did not exit zero.
Focused tests: apps/web/src/keybindings.test.ts, apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/surface.test.ts, packages/contracts/src/keybindings.test.ts, and apps/web/src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.test.ts. They cover command decoding, Linux Meta chords, focus restrictions, shell key preservation, precedence, IME protection, and existing native/clipboard paste races. The IME assertion failed before the ordering fix and passed afterward.
Integrated Linux web client, isolated dev state: configured both shortcuts through Settings; Meta+C wrote selected output to the real browser clipboard; no-selection Copy caused no write; denied clipboard reads showed the existing terminal error. Meta+V with a controlled clipboard reader inserted and executed the sample once. The message composer did not invoke terminal paste. Ctrl+C and the built-in Ctrl+Shift+V path were exercised.
Simulated removal of terminal:operate in the isolated client's cached session: Paste skipped clipboard reading; removing permission during a deferred read also prevented shell input. Restored the original permissions and clipboard reader afterward.
Limits: this browser denies OS clipboard reads, so successful paste used a controlled navigator.clipboard.readText. Electron's clipboard fallback, native desktop, macOS, Windows and mobile were not tested. Full suites and builds are left to CI.

Walkthrough
The change registers terminal.copy and terminal.paste, defines platform-specific shortcut helpers, and routes resolved commands through the terminal drawer. The terminal surface skips host key interception during IME composition. Tests and documentation cover shortcut resolution, composition events, and configuration.
The static command list adds terminal.copy and terminal.paste. Platform-specific helpers recognize copy and paste shortcuts. Tests cover modifier and terminal-focus conditions, command decoding, and binding precedence.
Route clipboard commands through the drawer apps/web/src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx, docs/user/keybindings.md
The drawer resolves shortcuts using terminal and editable-focus context. It handles copy and paste commands while preserving native terminal shortcuts in the described cases. The documentation covers configuration and shortcut behavior.
Skip host interception during composition apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/surface.ts, apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/surface.test.ts
The terminal surface uses the shared shortcut helpers and checks composition before AltGraph and host interception. Tests verify that Meta+V composition events do not invoke the host callback.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Do not restore terminal focus after the user leaves it.
If a clipboard read is pending and the user focuses the composer, the request remains current. When the read finishes, pasteFromClipboard calls focusIfCurrent and moves focus back to the terminal. Cancel or suppress focus restoration when focus has moved elsewhere. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

verified on linux in /usr/bin/google-chrome, driven with the repository's playwright dependency. main (5732bbee397f) and this pr ran separately, with one background dev server at a time and isolated state. i added the real repository through the app and completed real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns on both versions. no mocks, fixtures, replay provider, or replacement clipboard readers were used.
main's settings command picker has no terminal copy/paste actions. the pr exposes both, and i configured the shortcuts through settings.
meta+c copied selected terminal output to the real clipboard. with no selection, it preserved a sentinel value.
meta+v pasted a shell command; execution produced exactly one result line. copying terminal output and pasting it into the composer also worked. terminal-scoped meta+v did not paste into the composer.
shell ctrl+c interrupted sleep 60, and the shell accepted the next command. built-in ctrl+shift+v also worked.
found and fixed three failures in final head 27b6837298b7330d6753815034c771c1f58209c8: terminalFocus && editableFocus never matched, configured ctrl+shift+v blocked native paste with clipboard reads denied, and configured ctrl+shift+c blocked native copy with clipboard writes denied. the fix supplies editable focus and leaves native clipboard chords with the existing surface handler. no-selection copy remains consumed. i reproduced each failure and rechecked the fixes with real browser permission denial. shared shortcut predicates live in the existing keybinding module, preserving compatibility with the browser tests.
blacksmith passed all 74 existing focused tests in the four relevant files. vp run check:changed also passed format, lint, both knip checks, two affected package typechecks and 72 neighboring tests for the final follow-up. both independent read-only reviewers approved the final head.

electron's native clipboard fallback, macos/windows shortcuts, native ios/android, remote relay/tunnel connections, real ime candidate input, and terminal-write permission revocation were not exercised on this linux web path. ime composition protections passed the existing surface tests.

Preserve platform copy gestures before handling custom bindings.
When terminal.copy matches a platform copy gesture, return through the terminal surface before the generic branch. Otherwise, non-macOS Ctrl+C with no selection returns from beforeKey before terminal input is processed. Non-macOS Ctrl+Insert with a selection also bypasses the surface's native execCommand("copy") path.
Keep non-platform terminal.copy bindings on copySelection, including its permission-checked behavior.

Reject extra Alt modifiers in native copy and paste shortcuts.
On Linux, Ctrl+Alt+C and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V can resolve configured terminal commands, but both native helpers ignore altKey. ThreadTerminalDrawer therefore treats these non-native chords as native and bypasses copySelection or pasteFromClipboard.
For copy, this can skip the execCommand fallback when navigator.clipboard.writeText is unavailable. For paste, the surface ignores an unavailable or rejected readText(); the operation succeeds only if the browser also emits a native paste event. A non-native chord may not emit that event.
Reject Alt in both helpers. The clipboard read helper does not provide a separate successful fallback when the Clipboard API is unavailable or denied, but the predicate must still route configured non-native commands through the configured drawer action.
