The agent refused to call a page's write tool even when the user explicitly requested the change. Both preview_evaluate and the shared instructions imposed a blanket read-only rule. They now allow page-tool writes on user request, while retaining tab ownership checks and the rule to show results through html_render.
Recorded actual packaged macOS apps built from c2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4c on physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1, Electron 44.9.3 / Chromium 152.0.7977.167. Both used Claude Opus 5.5 through T3's normal Claude provider and Claude Code 2.1.312. These are real agent turns against native WebMCP callbacks and an HTTP notes backend that saves to disk.
Both production package builds used node scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts --platform mac --target dir --arch arm64 and exited 0. Each .app ran its own app.asar, compiled client and bundled server at t3code://app. No Vite server or development Electron entry was used. The fixed package used clean head source. The baseline package used that same source with only the two old policy clauses restored, with a distinct build ID. These are local unsigned packages, not the official signed Nightly.
Both fresh conversations received the identical request: "Use the page's create_note tool to create a note titled Groceries with body milk, eggs, bread."
Before: the agent refuses because page tools are limited to reading data, even when explicitly asked. The page stays at zero notes and its callback audit stays empty. The request is at 2:39 and refusal at 2:46.
baseline-packaged-note.mp4
After: the agent calls the real native create_note tool and saves the requested note. It remains after two client reloads. The request is at 1:51, successful callback at 2:00, first reload at 3:21, expanded successful execution at 6:30 and second reload at 7:01. The recording retains an initial argument-type error and the agent's autonomous correction. The backend records exactly one callback and one persistent write.
after-packaged-note.mp4
This proves that changing the two policy clauses changes this observed Opus request from refusal to a native page-tool write, and that the requested note persists after reload in the packaged client. It does not establish a guarantee for every model response.
Both variants used Chromium's --enable-features=WebMCP testing flag. Without it, neither package exposed document.modelContext. No polyfill was used. Separate T3 state, browser profiles and Claude sessions kept the tests isolated; --use-mock-keychain avoided the live macOS keychain. No app was installed over /Applications.
Fixed package build ID: 0.0.0-pr26570-after-c2f9d7bb; app.asar SHA-256 ed7d0d4846688417d3a3172bcb4fd8e6ec5be6d05ec2865c3723523f6fcad771. Baseline build ID: 0.0.0-pr26570-baseline-restored; app.asar SHA-256 f8d147698a46e09e6c8b2660df73cd576a4faf4ed4eabfe1d8c8dfe246016e99. Inspection of both archives confirmed the intended old/new policy clauses. Recordings are continuous H.264 captures, remuxed to MP4 without cuts or speed changes.
The earlier read-query recording at source 1d49b6575929b66297f88cfc314e34a6f36efa32 remains supplementary evidence: asking "Do I have duplicate notes?" calls only list_notes and leaves both notes unchanged. Production code and fixture inputs match the current head.

Real inline chart and explicit dashboard save
The packaged Linux app on physical corex ran the exact same head, c2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4c, with real Opus 5.5 Medium through the normal Claude provider. This continuous recording shows the actual client and a local HTTP analytics page with native WebMCP callbacks and a disk-backed dashboard. No simulated model responses or page-tool results were injected.
First request: "Use the site's query_usage tool to show me a daily usage bar chart here." The agent reads Monday 120 and Tuesday 180 and renders the bar chart inline through html_render. At 3:40, the chart is visible in T3 Code while the site still shows Saved charts: 0. Its audit has one query_usage callback and no writes; the saved-chart store is [].
Follow-up: "save that chart to the site's dashboard". The agent then executes save_chart with the title, bar type, and both data points. At 5:10, the site shows Saved charts: 1, alongside the explicit request in the client. Client Refresh at about 5:47 reloads the page and the saved chart remains. The complete backend audit contains exactly one query callback, one save callback and one persistent write, plus the page-load availability records.
charts-inline-save.mp4
This proves that this real conversation renders requested data inline without an unsolicited dashboard write, then performs and persists the site write when the user requests it. It is one observed conversation, not a guarantee for every future response. The recording retains two html_preview timeouts before the successful html_render, and the native argument-encoding error before the agent's successful JSON-string retry. The request to save is not supplied until the inline turn has finished.
The native callback audit records query_usage at 2026-10-29T13:04:46.009Z, save_chart at 13:08:01.089Z, its persistent write at 13:08:01.093Z, and reload at 13:08:52.043Z. The saved chart ID is c4c0f201-4ed3-4063-80f2-c5452c2d8b56. Read-only exports from the isolated T3 database confirm the agent's successful html_render and preview_evaluate calls.
Build 0.0.0-pr26570-c2f9d7bb used node scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts --platform linux --target dir --arch x64. Boat job j_agwvuafcowsa6ftvzmsk, attempt 1 on sandbox bx_rurwc8kj, completed with exit 0. The packaged app ran its bundled client/server on physical corex; no inference ran on Boat. app.asar SHA-256 is 03c04375034824dc47f729a25ea736ebde78858d0fbe687fe537e728da7a18d8. Electron 44.9.3 / Chromium 152.0.7977.167 and Claude Code 2.1.312 match the macOS test. This local package also used the native --enable-features=WebMCP flag and isolated OS, T3, browser and provider state. The video is an uncut 1680×980, 15 fps H.264 window capture with no audio. Full decoding exited 0.
Other clients use the same changed policy
Linux and Windows desktop use the same PreviewEvaluateTool in apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/preview/tools.ts, Claude system-prompt append in ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, and desktop preview host in apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.ts; these policy clauses have no OS branch.
Web uses those same server tool definitions and Claude instructions. ServerBrowserSurface.tsx displays the server browser; page evaluation reaches ServerBrowserPage.evaluate through the shared preview_evaluate handler and PreviewAutomationBroker.
iOS and Android likewise use the same server tool definitions, Claude instructions, and preview_evaluate handler. PreviewStreamWebView.tsx streams the host browser; the phone does not implement a separate page-tool policy.
The fix changes the shared guidance, with no client-specific permissions or browser-engine change. Native API availability still depends on the host browser.

The real run found a grader compatibility bug: Chromium 152 passes serialized JSON to executeTool, whereas newer WebMCP also accepts an object. The grader now accepts both. A regression fails on the preceding head and passes here; malformed or double-encoded arguments still fail, and a forbidden write with JSON arguments is still detected. Replaying the exact successful expression exported from the recording now records create_note with the correct title and body. No production code or prompt changed in this follow-up. The follow-up in c2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4c rejects decoded null, boolean, number, or string inputs before recording a callback, as required by the WebMCP spec. Its regression fails on the preceding grader; object inputs, serialized object inputs, and arrays remain accepted.
GitHub checks run on this head; the local results are above.
The three added model evals cover requested note creation, a duplicate-note query without writes, and an explicitly requested site chart save. The existing inline-chart guard is unchanged. The opt-in grader checks executed tool callbacks and structured arguments, preserves per-tab state, and treats incomplete subprocess replays as harness errors. Context budgets decrease by 2 bytes for each instruction context and 16 bytes for the tool list.
Supplementary simulated model evals
These are supporting evidence, separate from the real desktop recordings above. Paired runs used source 257dc3d904381a74abf59122e6a46beedb56a664, regraded at 1d49b6575929b66297f88cfc314e34a6f36efa32, with three samples per native case. Both old clauses were restored only in baseline request bodies. The model-facing text and fixture inputs are identical at the current head. These historical scores were not regenerated after the JSON-argument grader correction.

Both new-rule runs passed 11/12 samples and all four cases by majority. One Opus note sample stopped after misleading fixed mock output; one Sol inline-chart sample hit the step limit before rendering. They remain failures. All four paired commands exited 0 without harness exceptions. These evals used the mcli subscription proxy and simulated pages without DOM, network, or timers; they do not establish browser integration.
The recordings exercise native WebMCP in local packaged builds with the feature flag enabled. Official release signing, the reporter's existing profile/keychain, and native API availability without that flag were not verified. The simulated proxy evals remain supplementary evidence.
Implemented and verified with Claude Opus 5.5 through T3 Code's Claude provider and GPT-6.1 Sol through the Codex harness.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Default agent guidance now permits user-requested WebMCP writes rather than restricting page tools to reading data. This expands behavior that can create or save application data and needs human confirmation of the intended policy.

Walkthrough
Preview guidance now permits page-tool writes when the user requests them. The MCP tool-use evaluator replays WebMCP expressions and grades executed tools and inputs, including prohibited calls.
The preview tool description and orchestration instructions state that page tools write only on user request. Three configured context byte limits decrease.

Explanation
The title "fix(server): allow requested WebMCP writes" matches the main change. The raw summary and objectives show that preview_evaluate and the shared orchestration instructions now permit page-tool writes when the user explicitly requests them, replacing the blanket read-only rule. The title is concise, uses a conventional commit prefix, and avoids vague terms. It is 42 characters and 5 words, which is within a reasonable length.

Explanation
Issue [#26471] requires requested page changes to allow WebMCP write tools through preview_evaluate. The tool description now states that JavaScript can change page state and that page tools write only on user request. The shared orchestration instructions retain html_render for displayed results and prohibit page tools for display. Existing tab ownership rules remain in the tool description. Added WebMCP grading covers requested calls, structured inputs, tab scope, forbidden calls, and replay failures.

No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed diff and summaries.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem, the policy change, and the verification in unusually thorough detail. It names the linked issue (#26471) and explains that the change allows page-tool writes on explicit user request while keeping tab-ownership checks and the html_render display rule. The Verification section gives specific commands, results (format, lint, knip, GraphQL, typecheck across 23 packages, 419 passing tests), and real desktop recordings on macOS and Linux with build commands, commit hashes, and observed timestamps. It also states what was not verified: official release signing, the reporter's profile and keychain, and native API availability without the WebMCP flag. The template's Scope and approval section is not clearly filled in. The description never links a triaged bug issue or maintainer approval comment, and it does not justify why the change qualifies without one. The template's Problem and Change headings are also not used as written, though their content is present in other forms. The template asks for a conventional commit title, and the description does not provide one. The author also states that the agent used Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol, which is a model-attribution line the template requests.
Resolution
Scope and approval: add the triaged issue link (#26471 is referenced; confirm it is triaged) and include the maintainer approval comment or discussion showing approval of direction and scope. If there is no such approval, explain why this qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug, or as focused configuration of an established capability. 2) Restructure the description under the template headings (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification) or map the existing content to them so reviewers can find each one. 3) Add a conventional commit title in plain language, for example "fix(server): allow requested WebMCP writes". 4) Keep the note that the change is not verified with official signed release builds or with native API availability without the WebMCP flag. These are already stated and should remain.

… asks
The preview_evaluate description and the injected preview instructions said page
tools read data only and never create or save. Agents took that as absolute and
refused a page's create_note tool even when the user asked for the note.
Both now say page tools read data and change the site only when the user asked
for that change. The ban on using page tools to show results, which keeps charts
inline in html_render, stays. New mcp-tool-use cases cover the refused requested
write and guard against unrequested writes.

The three WebMCP fixtures used an invented navigator.modelContext.callTool, and
the regex grading rejected valid calls such as reordered chart properties.
Each preview_evaluate expression now runs in a node:vm page that has only
document.modelContext (getTools and executeTool, per Chrome's Imperative API).
Cases grade the tools it actually executed and their inputs, so logged, quoted,
commented, dead or discovery-only code cannot pass, and field order no longer
matters. The regex: matcher had no other users and is removed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review of the WebMCP grader found three gaps. Each preview_evaluate ran on a
fresh page, so tools saved on window by one call were gone in the next. A
detached rejection, such as getTools().then(() => { throw }), escaped the vm
and ended the eval process after gradeSample returned. And a string input was
recorded as its parsed JSON, so executeTool(tool, JSON.stringify(object))
matched an object expectation.
Expressions on one tab now replay in order on one page, and each tab gets its
own. Pages run in a bounded child process, so rejections no page handles end
there. Inputs are recorded as the value the page passed, strings included.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
executeWebMcp owns the replay child and sets --unhandled-rejections=none. The outer Node process is not needed to contain page rejections. Keep both expressions in one replay call so the second expression proves that a rejection left after the first expression does not stop replay. If the flag is removed, the replay child terminates and executeWebMcp throws.

Reject incomplete WebMCP replays before grading absence.
ETIMEDOUT and ENOBUFS currently return the executions printed before replay stopped. webmcp notCalls then treats missing later output as proof that the tool was not called. A sequence can hit the 30-second limit or 16 MiB buffer before a later forbidden expression runs, so the check can pass incorrectly.

A page expression can hit the 128-call cap before it reaches a later forbidden tool. The same can happen when vm.runInContext reaches its 250 ms timeout before the call. The replay then keeps earlier output, and notCalls checks only recorded executions, so the check can pass falsely.

Both outside-diff findings in review 5688221233 are fixed in 568b3d4:
R12: every child-process error, including ETIMEDOUT and ENOBUFS, is a harness fault before grading partial output.
R13: VM timeouts and the page-call cap also terminate replay as a harness fault. The cap remains detectable when page code catches its rejection. Ordinary page exceptions still retain executed calls.
The regressions failed before the fix. vp run check:changed now passes all 419 tests and 23 affected typechecks. Regrading all saved native old/new samples leaves every reported score unchanged. Production text and model-facing fixture inputs are unchanged.
@shivamhwp I’ll resume automatic reviews. Thanks for reporting the R12 and R13 fixes in 568b3d49cf5af9ed3952af7b418d2cda124e44e1 and the passing checks. I have not independently verified those results in this reply.

## Verifying
- Test meaningful logic or observable behavior. Do not render components to static markup to assert props or attributes, or add tests that merely assert callback wiring or mirror the implementation.

The agent refused to call a page's write tool even when the user explicitly requested the change. Both
preview_evaluateand the shared instructions imposed a blanket read-only rule. They now allow page-tool writes on user request, while retaining tab ownership checks and the rule to show results throughhtml_render.Closes #26471
Real desktop verification
Recorded actual packaged macOS apps built from
c2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4con physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1, Electron 44.9.3 / Chromium 152.0.7977.167. Both used Claude Opus 5.5 through T3's normal Claude provider and Claude Code 2.1.312. These are real agent turns against native WebMCP callbacks and an HTTP notes backend that saves to disk. Both production package builds used
node scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts --platform mac --target dir --arch arm64and exited 0. Each.appran its ownapp.asar, compiled client and bundled server att3code://app.
After: the agent calls the real native
create_notetool and saves the requested note. It remains after two client reloads. The request is at 1:51, successful callback at 2:00, first reload at 3:21, expanded successful execution at 6:30 and second reload at 7:01. The recording retains an initial argument-type error and the agent's autonomous correction. The backend records exactly one callback and one persistent write.after-packaged-note.mp4
This proves that changing the two policy clauses changes this observed Opus request from refusal to a native page-tool write, and that the requested note persists after reload in the packaged client. It does not establish a guarantee for every model response.
Both variants used Chromium's
--enable-features=WebMCPtesting flag. Without it, neither package exposeddocument.modelContext. No polyfill was used. Separate T3 state, browser profiles and Claude sessions kept the tests isolated;--use-mock-keychainavoided the live macOS keychain. No app was installed over/Applications.Fixed package build ID:
0.0.0-pr26570-after-c2f9d7bb;app.asarSHA-256ed7d0d4846688417d3a3172bcb4fd8e6ec5be6d05ec2865c3723523f6fcad771. Baseline build ID:0.0.0-pr26570-baseline-restored;app.asarSHA-256f8d147698a46e09e6c8b2660df73cd576a4faf4ed4eabfe1d8c8dfe246016e99. Inspection of both archives confirmed the intended old/new policy clauses. Recordings are continuous H.264 captures, remuxed to MP4 without cuts or speed changes. The earlier read-query recording at source
1d49b6575929b66297f88cfc314e34a6f36efa32remains supplementary evidence: asking "Do I have duplicate notes?" calls onlylist_notesand leaves both notes unchanged. Production code and fixture inputs match the current head.read-guard.mp4
Real inline chart and explicit dashboard save
The packaged Linux app on physical corex ran the exact same head,
c2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4c, with real Opus 5.5 Medium through the normal Claude provider. This continuous recording shows the actual client and a local HTTP analytics page with native WebMCP callbacks and a disk-backed dashboard. No simulated model responses or page-tool results were injected.First request: "Use the site's query_usage tool to show me a daily usage bar chart here." The agent reads Monday 120 and Tuesday 180 and renders the bar chart inline through
html_render. At 3:40, the chart is visible in T3 Code while the site still shows Saved charts: 0. Its audit has onequery_usagecallback and no writes; the saved-chart store is[].Follow-up: "save that chart to the site's dashboard". The agent then executes
save_chartwith the title, bar type, and both data points. At 5:10, the site shows Saved charts: 1, alongside the explicit request in the client. Client Refresh at about 5:47 reloads the page and the saved chart remains. The complete backend audit contains exactly one query callback, one save callback and one persistent write, plus the page-load availability records.charts-inline-save.mp4
This proves that this real conversation renders requested data inline without an unsolicited dashboard write, then performs and persists the site write when the user requests it. It is one observed conversation, not a guarantee for every future response. The recording retains two
html_previewtimeouts before the successfulhtml_render, and the native argument-encoding error before the agent's successful JSON-string retry. The request to save is not supplied until the inline turn has finished. The native callback audit records
query_usageat2026-10-29T13:04:46.009Z,save_chartat13:08:01.089Z, its persistent write at13:08:01.093Z, and reload at13:08:52.043Z. The saved chart ID isc4c0f201-4ed3-4063-80f2-c5452c2d8b56. Read-only exports from the isolated T3 database confirm the agent's successfulhtml_renderandpreview_evaluatecalls.Build
0.0.0-pr26570-c2f9d7bbusednode scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts --platform linux --target dir --arch x64. Boat jobj_agwvuafcowsa6ftvzmsk, attempt 1 on sandboxbx_rurwc8kj, completed with exit 0. The packaged app ran its bundled client/server on physical corex; no inference ran on Boat.app.asarSHA-256 is03c04375034824dc47f729a25ea736ebde78858d0fbe687fe537e728da7a18d8. Electron 44.9.3 / Chromium 152.0.7977.167 and Claude Code 2.1.312 match the macOS test. This local package also used the native--enable-features=WebMCPflag and isolated OS, T3, browser and provider state. The video is an uncut 1680×980, 15 fps H.264 window capture with no audio. Full decoding exited 0.Other clients use the same changed policy
PreviewEvaluateToolinapps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/preview/tools.ts, Claude system-prompt append inClaudeAdapterV2.ts, and desktop preview host inapps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.ts; these policy clauses have no OS branch.ServerBrowserSurface.tsxdisplays the server browser; page evaluation reachesServerBrowserPage.evaluatethrough the sharedpreview_evaluatehandler andPreviewAutomationBroker.preview_evaluatehandler.PreviewStreamWebView.tsxstreams the host browser; the phone does not implement a separate page-tool policy. The fix changes the shared guidance, with no client-specific permissions or browser-engine change. Native API availability still depends on the host browser.
Tests
Current head
c2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4c, physical corex:The real run found a grader compatibility bug: Chromium 152 passes serialized JSON to
executeTool, whereas newer WebMCP also accepts an object. The grader now accepts both. A regression fails on the preceding head and passes here; malformed or double-encoded arguments still fail, and a forbidden write with JSON arguments is still detected. Replaying the exact successful expression exported from the recording now recordscreate_notewith the correct title and body. No production code or prompt changed in this follow-up. The follow-up inc2f9d7bb17ee8b064b2576b5a6241c1196a5ab4crejects decoded null, boolean, number, or string inputs before recording a callback, as required by the WebMCP spec. Its regression fails on the preceding grader; object inputs, serialized object inputs, and arrays remain accepted.GitHub checks run on this head; the local results are above.
Paired runs used source
257dc3d904381a74abf59122e6a46beedb56a664, regraded at1d49b6575929b66297f88cfc314e34a6f36efa32, with three samples per native case.
