fix(server): Codex tools start in No project threads when scratch is a symlink - #26066
When the T3 home's scratch directory is a symlink, Codex shell commands and Computer Use in a "No project" thread fail during sandbox setup, before the command runs. On macOS Codex reports writable root <T3_HOME>/scratch/<thread> contains symlink component <T3_HOME>/scratch; symlinked writable roots are not supported. Reproduced on Linux on main (dc84b0962e): dev server with --home-dir whose scratch is a symlink, web client, No project thread, Codex in Auto (workspace-write), asked to run pwd && touch made-by-codex && echo ok. Both attempts failed with error building bubblewrap command: Fatal error: cannot enforce sandbox read-only path …/t3home/scratch/<thread>/.git because it crosses writable symlink …/t3home/scratch.
Change
ManagedProjectFolders.folderForThread now resolves the scratch root's real path after creating it, and allocates each thread folder under that path. The thread folder becomes the thread's worktreePath, which is the provider cwd and sandbox writable root, so it no longer contains a symlink. The scratch project's workspaceRoot and the scratchWorkspaceRoot sent to clients keep the configured path, so "No project" identity and grouping are unchanged.
vp test run apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts: new test puts a Scratch thread's folder under the real path when the Scratch folder is a symlink fails on main (Expected: "/tmp/t3-scratch-target-…/1970-01-01-run-a-shell-command-dscratch", Received: "/tmp/t3-managed-folders-…/scratch/1970-01-01-run-a-shell-command-dscratch") and passes here; 13/13 pass, also with a symlinked TMPDIR (the macOS /var → /private/var case, which is why an existing assertion now compares with the real root).
ThreadLaunchService.test.ts passes; vp run check:changed passes.
Runtime transcript, same steps on a fresh home with a symlinked scratch:
Before (main dc84b0962e): error building bubblewrap command: Fatal error: cannot enforce sandbox read-only path /tmp/…/t3home/scratch/2026-10-27-run-exactly-this-shell-command-5a08e9cf/.git because it crosses writable symlink /tmp/…/t3home/scratch
After (this branch): /tmp/…/elsewhere/scratch-real-after/2026-10-27-run-exactly-this-shell-command-9ff114eb ok, file created, thread still listed under No project.
No render path changes, so there are no captures.
Not checked: cannot-verify macos. The macOS seatbelt form of the error was not run; the Linux bubblewrap failure has the same cause (a symlink component in the writable root). Threads created before this change keep their stored symlinked folder.

Evidence
Real web client against each side's own dev server: fresh synthetic home, T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0, a new No project thread, Codex in Auto, the prompt Run exactly pwd && touch made-by-codex && echo ok in your current working directory…. Fixture matrix.
Environment: Linux x86_64 VM; Playwright 1.60.0 headless Chromium 148; 1440×1000 CSS px, DPR 1, no device emulation, 100% font scale; dark; reduced motion; browser clock frozen. Codex CLI 0.163.0 / GPT-6-Astra / Medium / Auto (workspaceWrite, networkAccess false).
Recordings: before (SYM-B) · after (SYM-A). Steps, same driver on both sides (MP4 seconds, before / after): fill prompt 1.0 / 1.0, submit 1.1 / 1.2, turn complete and work log expanded 14.2 / 12.9 (after: shell item expanded 13.5; before has none, the sandbox fails before Codex emits one), rename and select No project 15.4 / 14.3, provider-update footer resolved 15.6 / 14.4, reload of the finished thread 23.1 / 22.5, settled still 25.4 / 24.9.
Plain scratch, after only (regression guard), 1440×1000 / dark at ba74721bab: exit 0, ok, marker created, thread stays under No project; chrome is pixel-identical to the symlinked after still outside the chat result. Recording
Native transcripts and path checks: before manifest (exit 1, "crosses writable symlink", no marker, stored path under the symlink) · after manifest (exit 0, marker, thread path is canonical, project workspaceRoot stays the configured scratch) · plain manifest.
What else changed (diffs: 150,824 px at >0, 22,395 px at >16, all inside the chat result):
Intended: the sandbox error becomes the expanded shell command with the physical cwd, ok and exit 0; the response block moves and changes height and content.
Run-specific text: durations (8.7s vs 8.1s), model wording, physical vs configured paths, timestamps and thread id suffixes.
Nothing outside the chat result: sidebar, footer, header, prompt and composer are pixel-identical at threshold 0. Both stills wait for the provider-update footer control to settle, so it is in the same state on both sides.
Pass 2, round 1: rejected; the footer provider-update control differed between the stills (a timing race in the update check, not this PR). Recaptured with the control settled on both sides.
Pass 2, round 2: rejected the plain-scratch row; its final frame showed a stale Working shelf. Recaptured with the same settling driver.
Pass 2, round 3: SUFFICIENT. Independent rebuilds of the symlinked after and plain after captures differ only in run-specific text; diff images recomputed exactly.
Tests: ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts 13/13 after merging main; vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests).
Unverified: cannot-verify macos (seatbelt form of the error).
Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (lead); GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex (proof audit, capture).
When the T3 home's scratch directory is a symlink, each projectless
thread's folder (its provider cwd and sandbox writable root) carried a
symlink component, which macOS seatbelt and Linux bubblewrap reject, so
Codex tools failed in "No project" threads.
folderForThread now resolves the scratch root with realPath before
joining the thread folder name. The scratch project's workspaceRoot and
the advertised scratchWorkspaceRoot stay on the configured path so
clients still recognise the existing "No project" project.

On macOS the temp dir sits behind /var -> /private/var, so the lexical
root no longer matches the folders folderForThread returns.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, well-scoped server bug fix that resolves symlinked scratch roots before allocating new thread workspaces. Existing project identity remains unchanged, and a regression test covers the symlink case.

Thread folder creation now resolves the Scratch root before generating folder paths. Tests verify the resolved path for a symlinked Scratch directory.

Summary
Resolve the Scratch root apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.ts, apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts
folderForThread creates and resolves the Scratch root before building thread-folder paths. Tests check generated paths against the resolved root, including when the configured root is a symlink.
Scratch folders are created beneath the resolved root, but the new test would not catch a future change that places them elsewhere. This is mergeable with a small follow-up assertion.

Explanation
The title accurately names the primary change: Codex tools in No project threads failing when the scratch directory is a symlink. It uses the conventional commit format and states the user-visible symptom and the affected area (server). It matches the changeset, which resolves the scratch real path for thread folders.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #26051 asks that Codex shell and Computer Use tools start in projectless Scratch threads when the T3 scratch directory is a symlink. The sandbox fails because the writable root contains a symlink component. The diff in apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.ts (folderForThread) calls makeScratchFolder, then fileSystem.realPath on the scratch root, and builds each thread folder under that real path. The thread folder becomes the provider cwd and writable root, so it has no symlink component. The configured root is still used for the project's workspaceRoot, so project identity is unchanged. The new test 'puts a Scratch thread's folder under the real path when the Scratch folder is a symlink' asserts that the returned folder equals its real path. The PR reports a Linux runtime run where the command succeeded and the thread stayed under No project. Limits: the macOS seatbelt path was not run. Threads created before this change keep their stored symlinked folder. The issue's macOS wording is therefore covered by the shared cause, not by a macOS run. The issue's 'explain and offer a real path' option is not used, but the issue allows either outcome.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changes are tied to the scratch symlink fix. ManagedProjectFolders.ts changes only folderForThread: it resolves the real root, wraps realPath failures in ScratchFolderError with the configured root, and keeps the collision and naming logic. ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts adds the symlink regression test. It also changes an existing assertion to compare against the real root, which is needed because a symlinked TMPDIR would otherwise make the old expectation fail. No unrelated files or behavior changes appear in the reviewed diff for these paths. The PR also reports ThreadLaunchService.test.ts and check:changed passing, but those were not inspected in this review.

The current assertion can pass when folderForThread returns a canonical folder outside the Scratch target. Keep the real-path assertion and also verify the direct parent.

Runtime captures for the transcript in Verification (web client, No project thread, Codex in Auto, scratch symlinked; synthetic test home):
Before, main dc84b0962e: sandbox setup fails with "crosses writable symlink …/t3home/scratch".
After, ba74721: the command runs in the real path, prints ok, and the thread stays under No project.
@coderabbitai on the nitpick at ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts:283: the existing test "gives each Scratch thread its own folder, named from its message" already asserts path.dirname(folder) === realPath(scratchRoot) for every folder it allocates, so a canonical folder placed outside the Scratch root fails there. The symlink test pins only what this bug adds, so I'm leaving it as is.

@juliusmarminge You're right. I checked ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts: the existing test asserts that each generated folder’s parent equals the resolved Scratch root. The symlink test adds the canonical-path check for this regression. My request for another assertion was unnecessary, so I withdraw the nitpick.
The runtime captures also show the Linux sandbox failure before the change and successful execution in the real Scratch path afterward, with the thread still under No project. No further change is needed for this nitpick.
