fix(server): browse readable local symlink targets - #26044
A readable directory link to a separate data volume disappears from Add Project and Files. Even if the alias is typed manually, expanding it or previewing a file rejects the canonical target as outside the workspace. On the same server, reading that file by absolute path succeeds.
Fixes#8234. Also addresses the directory-picker and Files symptoms reported in #8408. Linux reproduction and existing-report search: #8234 (comment).
Change
Resolve link targets when classifying directory entries, retaining alias paths and limiting classification to eight concurrent entries. Inspect every symlink and intermediate path component with lstat/readlink before proceeding; omit network targets before a following operation can authenticate to their host. Bound link traversal to 40 links. Let local file reads and directory expansion follow those links with the server user's OS permissions, matching existing absolute host-file reads. Omit broken links, links into .git, and folder links that lead back to a real directory on the expansion path, including sibling cycles.
Workspace write containment and external network-target restrictions remain in place. No contracts or clients change: the shared server methods serve web, desktop and mobile.
Scope and approval
This proposes one complete local-symlink browsing path: discover a directory, expand it, and read its files. It overlaps the picker-only #8281 and contained-link Files tree #21920; those PRs do not allow reading or expanding links to local targets outside the workspace. Discussion #6727 is earlier context.
Maintainer direction is requested for the local read-containment change. Current main deliberately rejects canonical targets outside the workspace for relative reads. This PR allows local targets already readable by the server user; it is not limited to correcting Dirent classification. No prior maintainer approval for that policy change is claimed. Permission-error presentation, search/indexing, Finder aliases and writes are outside this change.
Verification
Based directly on upstream main at dc84b0962efa4f4e05ef392c08986a9cd7c994d1.
Added/updated focused regressions first: against unmodified main, four cases fail because the directory alias is absent and external local link reads are rejected (38 tests pass). After the fix and an additional network-target regression, all 44 tests pass in WorkspaceEntries.test.ts and WorkspaceFileSystem.test.ts.
vp run check:changed HEAD before committing: format, lint, both knip passes, GraphQL generation check, affected typechecks (server, scripts and evals), and both changed test files pass. The fresh checkout needed the missing workspace dependencies installed and the ignored SPDX cache populated before knip could run without a network reset; no dependency/configuration changes are included.
Real filesystem service smoke on this branch, with disposable project/storage directories:
PASS filesystem.browse offers data -> external directory
PASS projects.listEntries shows directory alias
PASS linked directory expands; link back to project omitted
PASS projects.readFile contents match direct OS read
Earlier Linux deployment verification of the initial fix compared actual authenticated RPC results with OS reads: 21 directories and 17 file previews pass, including a home-directory link to a separate data volume. This PR adds cycle guards and retains network-root checks on top of that initial fix; the Linux deployment is supporting evidence, not a claim that this exact PR head was deployed.
Tests cover direct/chained/intermediate network links without following them, broken links, Git metadata aliases, self/parent/sibling cycles, missing files under external directory links, and rejection of a link resolving to an external network path. Existing write-boundary tests pass.
Not verified interactively on Windows, or in native desktop/mobile clients. No UI rendering code changes; the service smoke and regressions exercise the common backend.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR changes default server behavior so workspace symlinks can browse and read local targets outside the workspace, while retaining special handling for network paths. Symlink classification can nevertheless follow a UNC target before rejection, creating a concrete Windows NTLM exposure that requires human security review.

Walkthrough
Workspace browsing and listing resolve symlinks and filter broken, Git metadata, cyclic, and disallowed network targets. Workspace reads allow local symlink targets outside the workspace and continue to reject network targets outside it.
Browsing resolves candidate entry types and includes directories reached through symlinks. It omits unresolved links and links into Git metadata. Tests cover linked project directories.
Directory listing resolves child types and excludes broken links, Git metadata, external network targets, and links that create ancestor cycles. Tests cover traversal and symlink listing.

Reads allow local symlink targets outside the workspace but continue to reject network targets outside it. Tests cover both cases and missing children beneath linked directories.
pingdotgg/t3code#24547 — This PR supports symlink discovery in workspace browsing and listing. It does not change the separate search index.

pingdotgg/t3code#21920 — Both PRs change symlink handling in WorkspaceEntries.list. This PR also changes external local-target handling and adds browse support.

Explanation
Issue #8234 requires reading files inside a symlinked iCloud Drive folder. WorkspaceFileSystem.resolveReadTarget now permits local targets outside the workspace when the server user has OS access and keeps network targets restricted. WorkspaceEntries resolves symlink entries and supports discovery and expansion. Focused tests cover external linked-file reads and linked-directory browsing.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within the local-symlink browsing path for #8234. Directory classification, expansion, file reads, cycle handling, broken-link handling, concurrency limits, and network-target restrictions support that path. The reported changes affect shared server logic and focused tests. No unrelated client, contract, write, search, or indexing changes are reported.

The patch intentionally changes the local workspace read boundary: relative reads and directory expansion now follow symlinks outside the canonical workspace root with OS-user permissions. This goes beyond classifying omitted directory symlinks. The PR explicitly requests maintainer direction and says no prior approval is claimed; full linked issues 8234 and 8408 contain reporter requests and diagnosis but no maintainer approval for removing that deliberate containment policy.
Get explicit maintainer approval for allowing workspace-relative reads/expansion outside the canonical project root, or restrict the repair to directory classification and already-authorized contained targets.
