Problem

With two accounts for the same provider (for example two Claude instances, badges C1 and VY), every chat subagent avatar shows the same plain provider logo. The "N subagents" header, its expanded rows, standalone subagent lifecycle rows, workflow member rows and the mobile feed's grouped header can't tell you which account each subagent runs on. The sidebar, composer and handoff row already can. Reproduced on main 97e35bcf23 in the web app and on an Android Pixel 9 with a two-account fixture: identical plain Claude logos, status dot only.

Change

  • Web: EnvironmentSubagentAvatar, which every chat subagent avatar goes through, now reads the badge decision and accent colour from the environment the subagent runs in (its linked environment for remote children). It uses the sidebar's derivation (deriveProviderEntriesByEnvironment, so an account a project turns on still counts as a sibling) and the shared shouldShowInstanceBadge rule. It selects primitives only, so provider status pushes don't re-render the card. SubagentAvatar renders the compact badge. When a badge shows, the status dot moves to the top-left, away from the badge corner.
  • Grouped headers on web and mobile stack earlier avatars on top so each bottom-right badge stays visible.
  • Mobile: the grouped header's SubagentAvatar renders ProviderInstanceIcon with the badge under the same rule, scoped to the subagent's own environment. The handoff row's provider mapping moved unchanged into resolveBadgeProviders in thread-provider-instance.ts, and both use it.

Single-account users with no accent colour see no badge. No contract, server or adapter change.

Scope and approval

Fixes #24896

Triaged via the automated issue flow; GitCafe issue https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24896.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed on fd6f84adeb (main merged): format, lint, knip, typecheck (3 packages), tests beside the changes, react compiler all pass.
  • vp test run apps/web/src/providerInstances.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/providerInstanceDisplay.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-provider-instance.test.ts: 40 passed. The project-enabled sibling case is covered by the existing providerInstances.test.ts case "keeps an instance a project turns on as a sibling for the instance badge", which this change now uses.
  • Two independent code reviews of aebac9ae29: MERGE from both.

Evidence: before 97e35bcf23 and after aebac9ae29. These are the real web app (Chromium, 1440×900 and 390×844, DPR 2, light and dark) and the real Android app (pooled Pixel 9, API 36, light and dark), rendering synthetic two-account subagent projections through a labelled fixture harness. Each pair has a zero-threshold and a >16 threshold diff. Rows captured: two-account grouped header (collapsed and expanded), three-avatar stack, overflow, completed, failed, running→completed, idle/cancelled lifecycle rows, notification row, phased and unphased workflow members, single-account control, project-enabled sibling, and mobile grouped header (two accounts, three accounts, overflow, single-account control). Each sheet below reads Before (97e35bcf23) | After (aebac9ae29) | Diff0 (zero threshold, ×32) | DiffT (max channel difference >16). Observed:

  • Web: neutral C1 and yellow VY badges appear on every avatar path. When a badge shows, the status dot moves to the top-left. Changed pixels are confined to the avatar regions.
  • Android: badges appear in the grouped header, and the badged provider logo renders at 60% opacity (the existing ProviderInstanceIcon style).
  • Single-account controls: no badge. Only the stack overlap edge changes, from the new stack order.

W1 web 1440 light: grouped header + expanded rows (before | after | diff0 | diffT>16)

M1 Android Pixel 9 light: two-account grouped header

M1 Android Pixel 9 dark: two-account grouped header

M2 Android light: three stack positions

C2 Android light: single-account control

C2 Android dark: single-account control

Not verified: iOS (Android only), subagents in a linked remote environment, ACP-agent identity variants, mobile handoff-row endpoints after the helper move, and live provider-settings edits through the Settings UI.

Independent proof audit of these captures: the stills for the changed avatar paths hold (stack positions, lifecycle status variants, notification, fallback, single-account controls, mobile three-position stack), with these limits:

  • The fixture projections use createdBy: "assistant", which the schema rejects, so the captures prove rendering only, not persisted state.
  • The project-enabled sibling (P1) is driven by injected config snapshots, not a save through Settings.
  • Some interaction recordings (overflow and workflow navigation) contain blank frames mid-navigation. One Android light navigation clip does not match before/after. Active-group elapsed timing is not covered because the clock is frozen.
  • The W1 still was taken with the pointer hovering the "Worked for" label.

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 (lead, implementation, review B) and GPT-6.1 Sol (review A, proof audit, captures) via Claude Code and Codex in T3 Code.

Takeover

Taken over from @juliusmarminge. No code changes; evidence and verification added below. The evidence above (before 97e35bcf23, after aebac9ae29) is superseded: it rendered schema-invalid injected projections and an injected project setting. The captures below are new and run on head fd6f84adeb. Children are created through delegated_task.request and settings through server.updateSettings, each against a fresh database.

Evidence

Before 32ecd71726 (merge-base) · After fd6f84adeb. Each sheet reads Before | After | Diff0 | DiffT with both SHAs burned in. Diff0 is the RGB difference ×16 at threshold 0. DiffT marks any channel that differs by more than 16/255.

Environment:

  • Web: Chromium 156 on Linux, no device emulation, CSS 1440×900 (W) and 390×844 (N), DPR 2, zoom 100%, 16px font. Each still is taken only when two frames 500 ms apart are identical, with the pointer parked in the gutter.
  • Android: pooled Pixel 9, API 36, 1080×2424, DPR 2.625, font scale 1.0. Before and after run on the same emulator.
  • Desktop: Electron under Xvfb at 1440×900.

Data is synthetic: real orchestration children on a local ACP replay instance pair C1 (neutral) and VY (yellow). Rows marked HARNESS render production components from schema-valid fixtures because the app cannot be seeded into them.

All recordings with step timestamps: round 1, round 2, round 3 (full-resolution manifest).

What else changed (from the zero-threshold diffs):

  • Account initials and the neutral or accent badge appear on avatars, with contrast-chosen white or black text.
  • Mobile header logos under a badge render smaller and dimmer.
  • Web status dots move to the top-left when a badge shows.
  • Earlier avatars now stack above later ones, in unbadged stacks too, as described above.
  • Diffs also light up a few things this PR does not change:
    • A04 web: sidebar ages differ between before and after (3h vs 4h; 5h vs 2h in the round 3 retake).
    • W03: Worked-for and child duration labels.
    • W09/W10 narrow tooltip frames: shadow rasters.
    • Android A02/A04/A05/M03: disclosure chevron, copy and fork icon rasters.
    • Android M01 light (round 2): six navigation-handle pixels.
    • iOS M01/M02: the status-bar clock.

Seeding and drivers: round 1 scripts, round 2 drivers, round 3 drivers, rebuild instructions, RPC receipts, fixture matrix.

Verification log
  • Evidence-only round at head fd6f84adeb: no code changes, so no new tests or review rounds. The code was reviewed earlier at aebac9ae29 (two reviews, MERGE from both). Tests are unchanged: 40 passed in the three test files listed above.
  • Proof audits:
    • Pass 1 derived a 33-row matrix.
    • Pass 2 ran on each of three capture rounds.
    • Sufficient: W01, W02, W06, W07, D01.
    • Independent rebuilds at the head matched the delivered panels with 0 differing pixels: W05, W02 and W06.
  • Captured but INSUFFICIENT:
    • W03: duration labels drift.
    • W05: narrow and transition cells missing.
    • W08: the resume transition did not render.
    • W09/W10: narrow fold and navigation retakes missing.
    • M01: Android expand and collapse are clean; child navigation and iOS are missing.
    • M02/M03: iOS clock drift; M03 Android dark expanded rejected.
    • A01/A02/A04/A05: iOS missing. A02/A05 Android retakes did not render the group. A04 has sidebar age drift.
    • H01: Android clean; iOS and plural sources missing.
  • Not captured:
    • W04 and M04 active clocks; M05 and Z01 guard observations; M06 iOS inspector.
    • A03 name labels, A06 ACP identity, A07 logo morphology, A08 hydration and error states.
    • R01–R03: linked remote environments.
    • H02–H04: handoff pending, failed and fallback endpoints.
  • Audit reports: round 1, round 2, round 3.
  • CI on fd6f84adeb: 40 of 40 checks pass.
  • Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 (lead) and GPT-6.1 Sol (proof audits, captures) via Claude Code and Codex in T3 Code.

With more than one account for a provider, subagent avatars in the chat
timeline and workflow rows looked identical. They now render the existing
ProviderInstanceIcon account badge under the shared shouldShowInstanceBadge
rule, and the web status dot moves top-left when the badge is shown.

Walkthrough

Web and mobile subagent avatars now display provider-instance badges when eligible. Mobile resolves badge providers from environment configuration, including linked environments. The changes also adjust avatar stacking and move the web status dot when a badge appears.

Changes: Subagent Account Badges

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider badge resolution
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-provider-instance.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-handoff-row.tsx
A shared resolver maps provider configuration to badge-provider entries. Mobile handoff rows use the resolved entries.
Mobile grouped avatar badges
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-subagent-group.tsx
Grouped avatars resolve providers from the current or linked environment, display eligible instance badges, and stack earlier avatars above later ones.
Web lifecycle avatar badges
apps/web/src/components/chat/V2LifecycleRow.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/TimelineV2EventRow.tsx
Lifecycle avatars derive provider-instance badge data and pass it to the avatar. The status dot moves to the upper-left when a badge appears. Stacked avatars use descending z-index values.

Explanation

Active issue [#24896] requires account identity on web grouped avatars, expanded subagent rows, workflow member rows, and mobile grouped avatars. EnvironmentSubagentAvatar in apps/web/src/components/chat/V2LifecycleRow.tsx derives the environment-scoped provider entry, accent color, display name, and badge eligibility. It passes these values to ProviderInstanceIcon and moves the status dot to the top-left when a badge is shown. V2SubagentGroup layers avatars so badge corners remain visible. ThreadSubagentGroup in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-subagent-group.tsx resolves local or remote environment providers, uses ProviderInstanceIcon with the same eligibility rule, and layers grouped avatars. resolveBadgeProviders preserves ACP registry agent identity and normalizes account data. The single-account path still uses the plain provider icon. The supplied verification reports formatting, lint, typecheck, and focused test success.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#24896]. The mobile resolveBadgeProviders helper and the ThreadHandoffDivider migration centralize the provider-instance data required for badge eligibility and preserve ACP identity. The web and mobile stacking changes directly support visible account badges. No contract, server, or adapter behavior changed, and no unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and follows the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification structure. It explains the reproduction, implementation scope, linked issue, extensive test results, visual evidence, and known verification limits. It does not include an explicit maintainer approval comment, but it documents triage and approval context sufficiently for a focused fix.

Conflicted files take main's version; the fix is re-applied on top.
Subagent avatars rendered only the provider icon, so with two accounts for
the same provider you could not tell which account a subagent ran on. They
now use the same instance badge rule as the sidebar, composer and handoff
row, scoped to the environment the subagent runs in. The status dot moves
to the top-left when the badge shows, and earlier header avatars stack on
top so overlapping badges stay visible.

When a second account is enabled by a project override but disabled globally, the enabled Codex account’s initials are hidden. applyProviderInstanceSettings(derived, settings, null) ignores project overrides, so shouldShowInstanceBadge counts the second account as disabled; preserve the snapshot’s enabled flags while applying branding, or resolve the relevant project.

Forward the settings-derived ACP fields to ProviderInstanceIcon.

EnvironmentSubagentAvatar derives a settings-enriched provider entry but forwards only the raw iconUrl. For an ACP subagent whose registry icon or agent ID exists only in environment settings, ProviderInstanceIcon cannot resolve that branding.
