Fixes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24344.

Mobile's workflow-opening and guest-sharing readers subscribe to an optimistic new-thread ID before creation finishes. An early not-found is cached as deleted, leaving “Thread unavailable” until the app restarts even though the server created the conversation. https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/15870 guarded other detail readers; the unconditional workflow reader introduced in https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/20857 bypassed that guard. The guest-sharing reader added in https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/24104 also reads details for ordinary, unshared threads before creation completes.

Current main now contains the production fix through a shared nullable selectedThreadDetailRef (#25477). This branch preserves that implementation: ThreadFeed passes the reference to both workflow-opening and guest-sharing readers, and a null reference prevents detail reads until creation is delivered. The workflow parent subscription uses an empty atom when there is no parent. This PR retains the focused regression coverage for pending-to-delivered reads and existing workflow metadata; its remaining diff is three test/config files.

This qualifies for the very small, focused obvious-bug exception in CONTRIBUTING.md: it restores the existing pending-creation invariant for these readers, without changing intended behavior, product defaults, or adding a capability. The issue links the prior accepted fix and records the source and runtime evidence.

Verification:

  • On 93f6ef418b, Blacksmith vp run check:changed passes formatting, lint (zero warnings/errors), both knip checks, mobile/scripts typechecks, and all 93 adjacent tests. Two independent read-only GPT-6.1 Sol reviews found no blocker or should-fix findings. Production source matches current main. Hosted CI and native end-to-end verification remain outstanding.
  • Regression test failed on the original reader: pending creation expected no loads, received ["new-thread"].
  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-workflow-opening.test.tsx: all three tests pass. They exercise real React hooks and Atom subscriptions with a fake detail source: no load while pending, load after delivery without restarting, ordinary thread without a parent load, and existing workflow with parent metadata. Native presentation components are mocked; this is not an end-to-end creation test.
  • A second regression renders the real ThreadFeed and guest-sharing hook: it fails before the guest gate because pending-thread is read while readiness is false, then passes with no pending read and a read after readiness becomes true. No guest URL or guest visitor is involved. All 93 affected tests pass.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecking, and adjacent tests pass. Existing warnings in ThreadFeed/ThreadDetailScreen remain; no unrelated cleanup.
  • Production traces from two affected creations show the bounded detail request failing before successful create dispatch begins (about 36.2 ms and 4.6 ms earlier). The hook test identifies the premature reader; the trace alone does not.

Redacted incident recording: original composition/send footage followed by the original unavailable frame held for two seconds. Private headers and upper screen are masked; navigation/list footage is omitted, so this edit does not preserve full navigation timing.

Restart recovery excerpt: recovery on the unpatched app, not patch verification. App-switcher contents are excluded.

restart-workaround-redacted.mp4

Incident:

Thread unavailable before restarting

Workaround on the unpatched app:

Conversation visible after restarting

Native verification gap: this Linux VM has no connected Android device (adb devices is empty), and cannot run iOS Simulator. There is no native post-patch screenshot or recording. The test proves subscription gating, not the complete native navigation flow; device confirmation remains outstanding.

Surface review: this is the shared mobile ThreadFeed path for pending and existing conversations. Web/desktop have separate readers; no changes to their paths, provider adapters, MCP/scheduled tasks, wire contracts, connection modes, or permissions are needed. The gate is environment-scoped and transport-independent. No new reversible state or user workflow is introduced, so documentation remains accurate. Device settings are outside this PR.

Implemented by GPT-6 Astra; conflict resolution and review follow-up by GPT-6.1 Sol, through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at a8cad86

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized mobile bug fix that defers one workflow detail subscription until optimistic thread creation is delivered, preventing stale not-found state while preserving existing delivered-thread behavior. It includes focused regression coverage and only test-harness configuration changes.

Explanation

The title "fix(mobile): defer thread detail reads until creation completes" names the primary change: mobile thread detail reads are deferred until thread creation finishes. The changeset adds a nullable selectedThreadDetailRef gate for the workflow-opening and guest-sharing readers, plus regression tests covering that gate. The title follows conventional commit format and is specific, concise, and free of noise. It is 63 characters, within a reasonable length for a single-line title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template in structure and most content. It has a Problem section that explains the early not-found caching bug and the reader that caused it. It has a Change section that explains the shared nullable selectedThreadDetailRef gate and the empty parent atom. It has a Scope and approval section that cites the CONTRIBUTING.md obvious-bug exception and links the issue. It has a Verification section with specific test results, a regression failure, and manual-check gaps. The Verification section does not include a commit hash that matches the one cited in the PR objectives (93f6ef4 in the description versus d405047 in the objectives), which is a minor inconsistency. The description also omits a model-and-harness line at the end. The author does give one ("Implemented by GPT-6 Astra; conflict resolution and review follow-up by GPT-6.1 Sol, through the Codex harness in T3 Code"), so that requirement is covered. The description is mostly complete, so it passes.

Seeing this too on an iPhone connected to a Mac host over Tailscale. The server traces show the phone's /bounded request failing with thread_not_found 50-80ms before thread.create arrives. I cherry-picked this PR into my build, and the new test fails without the fix and passes with it.

One more spot to cover when this gets rebased. #24104 added a useThreadGuestShare call to ThreadFeed with a ref built from props.threadId, and guestShareAtom reads environmentThreadDetails.threadAtom(ref), so on current main that hook makes the same early request for a new thread. I think it needs the same threadDetailReady gate.

Update the pending-thread detail fix for current main so the PR can merge. Preserve upstream guest sharing and linked-thread navigation, combine the React test registrations, and isolate the workflow hook regression tests from the new navigation dependency.

The three workflow regression tests pass. Focused lint passes with existing warnings. Guest-sharing behavior remains as upstream pending a separate reproduction.

Comment thread apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx Outdated
The PR review identified a remaining detail subscription through the guest-sharing hook. A regression test rendering the real ThreadFeed and guest-sharing hook confirms that an ordinary pending thread reads its details before creation completes, without any guest link or visitor.

Pass a null guest reference until thread details are ready, then subscribe after delivery. Merge current main, preserve both React test registrations, and supply the required readiness prop to the new upstream test caller.

The regression fails before the guard and passes afterward. All 93 affected tests, mobile type checks, focused lint, and formatting pass. Native device reproduction remains unverified.

thanks @brandon-julio-t. the shared readiness gate covers both premature readers, and the empty parent atom preserves workflow metadata without bypassing the gate.

merged current main (cc0b86ddf1) into your branch in d6133c764b, keeping every original commit. the only conflict was the mobile react test list; both additions are preserved. no production changes or coverage were dropped: the existing fix is already focused.

verification on this head:

  • restoring main's workflow and guest readers makes exactly two regressions fail with premature new-thread and pending-thread loads; restoring the fix passes all 93 tests.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passes formatting, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks and adjacent tests.
  • two independent read-only sol reviews found no blocker or should-fix findings on this head.
  • gitcafe reports no conflicts and seven successful check contexts. however, github's actual CI run and preview workflows report action_required, so full hosted CI still needs approval. coderabbit's new review was rate-limited; its earlier review covered the unchanged fix.

unverified: native creation/navigation and fresh before/after captures. this vm has no connected android device, and ios cannot run here. the default dev server booted and was stopped; the web client cannot demonstrate the separate native reader. existing incident evidence remains in the pr body. no merge-ready integration claim until hosted CI and native confirmation are available.

pushed d4050477e9: merged current main without rebasing and preserved its nullable detail-reference implementation. main now contains the production fix in https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/25477; the remaining pr diff is three test/config files (232 additions, 2 deletions). both premature-reader regression tests now use that reference. the previously fixed guest-reader finding is resolved.

blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, and all 93 tests. two independent read-only sol reviews found no blocker or should-fix findings. github reports mergeable with no conflicts.

hosted CI and preview runs on this head report action_required; CI has no jobs or failed logs yet. native creation/navigation remains unverified because this vm has no connected android device. pending bot checks and hosted workflow approval prevent an all-green readiness claim. no merge performed.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Cover the production readiness handoff.

Consumer sets ready itself. This test therefore cannot detect a change that passes an optimistic thread reference to ThreadFeed before creation completes. The production path derives selectedThreadDetailRef from creation state and passes it through to ThreadFeed. Add a focused test for that handoff so the premature detail read fails a regression test. the additional coverage suggestion identifies a known integration-test limit, not a verified regression. pending-thread-creation.test.ts:143 already covers queued/failed creation yielding a null detail reference and delivery releasing it. ThreadDetailScreen.tsx:1294 forwards that reference unchanged. this pr's tests cover the workflow and guest readers consuming it. production source matches merged main; keeping this focused pass unchanged rather than adding a broader screen harness. native end-to-end confirmation remains explicitly unverified.

all seven reported checks now pass on d4050477e9, and github confirms no conflicts. hosted CI and preview workflows still report action_required, so this is waiting for workflow approval, not fully verified merge readiness.

pushed 93f6ef418b: merged github/main (32bf48f428) without rebasing. the only conflict was the mobile react test registration; both additions are preserved. github confirms mergeable. the pr remains three test/config files, 232 additions and 2 deletions, with no production changes.

blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint (zero warnings/errors), both knip checks, mobile/scripts typechecks, and all 93 tests. two independent read-only sol reviews found no blocker or should-fix findings on this head. the real guest-reader finding is already fixed and resolved; the broader handoff coverage suggestion was already answered and does not justify expanding this pass.

hosted checks are still reporting. the previous head's CI required approval and had no jobs or failed logs. native creation/navigation remains unverified: adb devices is empty on this vm. no native evidence or full integration claim. no merge performed.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed app behavior could be verified on this linux boat vm. this is an unverifiable result, not an integration pass.

inspected the open pr, description, discussion, six pr commits and exact head 93f6ef418b8a6baa26fe6088c04f9ffac906e198. none of its pr commits is authored by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg. the remaining diff is three mobile test/config files (232 additions, 2 deletions). the production readiness gate is already on current github/main; the workflow reader source is identical. current main cannot reproduce the original missing gate.

ran adb devices -l: no devices. called t3 device_list: Agent device access is turned off for this environment. the mobile verification skill explicitly requires stopping when device tools or the selected device are unavailable. no dev server was started, and no code was changed or pushed.

command and inspection transcript

Not verified

native pending-thread creation and delivery, workflow parent metadata, guest-sharing subscriptions, reopening existing threads, and the codex gpt-6.1-sol provider-to-native-client path. no before/after screenshots or recording were captured because no native client could be driven. a desktop web flow would exercise different readers and would not prove this mobile fix. no main worktree/install or pr server/install was attempted after establishing this blocker.

reported github checks pass or skip, but do not establish this native behavior or full CI coverage. no checks were rerun. native android/ios verification remains required; this attempt supplies no merge-readiness claim.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

verified head 93f6ef418b8a6baa26fe6088c04f9ffac906e198 on the t3 android api 35 emulator. installed the matching development client from the shared cache, ran this head's metro bundle and isolated backend on port 13773, and paired the native app through its existing connection route.

created pr24345-android-project through the app's local-folder picker. selected codex gpt-6.1-sol through the model picker, using this vm's real local proxy. sent first messages in two new, ordinary unshared threads and saw ANDROID_FIRST_OK and ANDROID_SECOND_OK arrive in the native feed. neither creation showed "thread unavailable" or required restarting the app. reopened the first conversation from the thread list and sent a follow-up; the original response remained and ANDROID_FOLLOWUP_OK arrived. no mocks, replay provider, demo data, or database fixtures were used.

blacksmith vp run check:changed 32bf48f428200efc95295ed109526f7b88d9d68a passed format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, and all 93 tests. the worker needed the pr/base history fetched before checking; the initial default invocation stopped because its shallow checkout lacked origin/main history. no code changes or pushes were needed.

these are before-send and after-delivery captures of the same first conversation, not an unpatched/patched comparison. the 20-second continuous recording shows send, creation, and the real response. inspected the captures and verified uploaded video playback and seeking. reopened this comment: git.cafe renders these external uploads as links, so inline media rendering there is unavailable; the uploaded files open directly.

  • ios cannot run on this linux vm.
  • an unpatched native reproduction: current github/main already contains the production readiness gate, and this pr's remaining diff is test/config coverage. this run verifies the head's actual native flow, not a deterministic reproduction of every possible race timing.
  • existing workflow parent metadata and a shared guest visitor session were not exercised in the native app. the ordinary unshared feed exercises the workflow and guest readers implicated by this bug; the focused existing checks also passed.
  • remote relay/tunnel connections, other providers, and full hosted ci were not rerun. this pass used a direct paired connection with adb reverse.
