ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The production change is limited to version-advisory resolution for Codex standalone installs: it queries the installer’s native channel, validates platform assets, and reports unknown rather than comparing against npm when channel data is unavailable. Existing update execution and npm-managed paths remain unchanged, with focused coverage for platforms, failures, and overrides. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

null.

Native Codex updates can lag the npm release: T3 compares a standalone install against npm, then repeatedly offers an update that
codex updatecannot install. Fixes #23937.The standalone updater now gets its version advisory from the native installer's stable channel, through the existing cached installer-version lookup. It checks for the host platform's package plus checksum manifest, or the legacy platform npm archive, with valid SHA-256 metadata. npm installations keep their existing lookup. Failed or malformed native metadata or missing platform assets yields an unknown advisory instead of falling back to npm. Explicit release/channel overrides also remain unknown rather than guessing which release the installer will select. The HTTP request and JSON decoding have a four-second combined limit and run only when version checking is requested.
This is a focused correction to the established updater/version-check pairing, with no new update workflow or client layout changes. All clients consume the same server advisory.
Verification:
vp test run apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/CodexDriver.test.ts packages/provider-core/src/server/maintenanceResolver.test.ts: 80 tests pass.vp run check:changed: formatting, lint, dependency/export checks, affected typechecks and focused tests pass.Additional real-client evidence: Maria's Linux verification tested this exact head (
fc5dcafc4a4ead0830c483a8bf39e65689b29cc2) with the official standalone Codex binary and a real provider turn. The report reproduces the incorrect pinned-release update badge on main, verifies native stable/pinned/stable transitions and the neighboring npm installation, and records 80 passing tests plus the changed-scope checks. Its uploaded before/after images and recording are linked in that comment. This is contributor-reported Linux web evidence; it does not verify the historical staggered rollout, an actual upgrade, native macOS/Windows, packaged Electron, mobile or relay/tunnel modes.Model and harness: GPT-6 in the Codex desktop harness.
