Problem

Fixes #22869. With OpenCode's Server URL configured, T3 checks the running server's version but offers an update for the local Binary path. These can be different installations. In the reported Windows/Nightly case, the npm CLI was already 2.1.3 while a desktop-bundled server still ran 2.0.32; repeating the CLI update could not update that server.

Change

Configured servers now use the existing manual-only maintenance capability. T3 still checks the running server against the appropriate 1.x or 2.x package, keeps the outdated advisory visible on refresh, and explains how to update/restart the installation that hosts the server. The advisory clears when the server actually reports the new version.

An empty or whitespace-only Server URL retains T3-managed local CLI updates. No server is restarted automatically, and no extra CLI probe or shared contract/client changes are needed.

Tradeoffs: configured loopback servers require manual updates even when they happen to use the same local CLI installation. If both managed and manual OpenCode instances are behind latest, the existing shared sidebar update shortcut becomes unavailable; the managed instance's own Settings Update button still works.

Relationship to #22839

This is an alternative to the open #22839, not an independent bug. Credit to that PR for identifying the installed-CLI/running-server distinction. Its approach verifies the local CLI update, but a current CLI can hide an outdated server, and its successful restart message is discarded by the web success presentation. Those gaps were confirmed against its pinned head 4538f006: 33 existing tests passed, two version-mismatch characterization cases passed, and an added notification regression failed.

This change fixes the update target itself. A loopback URL also does not prove local installation ownership: it can point to a desktop bundle or a forwarded remote server. It therefore does not treat the local CLI version as evidence that the configured server is current. No code from #22839 is included.

Scope and approval

Submitted under the focused obvious-bug exception: the offered action updates an installation that T3 cannot establish as the configured provider. The fix stays in OpenCode's existing driver/maintenance boundary, reuses manual-update support, and preserves automatic updates where T3 starts the local server. This is one underlying problem, with focused tests and the corresponding user-guide clarification. No maintainer approval is claimed.

Verification

  • Added driver regressions for both loopback and remote Server URLs. On base ef924413, both failed because maintenance returned a local opencode upgrade action. After the fix, both pass.
  • Tests check manual update/targeted-install capabilities, no local CLI probe, a persistent server-version advisory over repeated refreshes, and clearing that advisory after the server changes from 2.0.32 to 2.1.3.
  • A positive control confirms an empty/whitespace Server URL still offers the native CLI upgrade; existing npm 1.x/2.x maintenance tests remain green.
  • vp test run packages/provider-opencode/src/server/driver.test.ts: 7 passed.
  • vp run check:changed: passed format, lint, knip, typecheck of all five affected packages, and the focused tests.
  • Claude Fable 5.1 completed an independent adversarial review of ownership, update entry points, refresh behavior, contribution scope, and overlap with fix(opencode): verify CLI updates when loopback server is still running #22839. Its missing-latest-version finding was reproduced with a failing assertion, fixed, and included in the final checks.

These are isolated driver/service tests with a temporary local installation and replayed server responses. The original Windows incident and supported service-restart workaround are documented in the sanitized issue comment. Checks ran in Linux/WSL; Windows test execution, the patched desktop UI, and a live server upgrade were not exercised; the installed application and active state were left untouched. No raw logs or identifying local paths are attached.

Implemented and tested by GPT-6 Astra through Codex in T3 Code; adversarial review by Claude Fable 5.1 through the Claude Agent harness.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

OpenCode maintenance now treats a nonblank configured server URL as an externally managed server. It does not offer a local package update for that server and provides guidance to update and restart it outside T3 Code. A blank server URL retains local update behavior.

Changes: OpenCode server updates

The driver skips local update resolution for configured servers and changes the advisory when the running version is behind the latest version. Tests cover local and remote URLs, verify that no CLI version probe occurs, and confirm that a blank or whitespace-only URL retains the native upgrade command.

The configured-server maintenance behavior looks sound, and the tests cover loopback and remote URLs. One new test fixture may fail on Windows. That affects test runs, not production behavior. Fix the fixture name before relying on Windows test runs.

Explanation

The reviewed changes connect to [#22869]. Diff of driver.ts from merge base 3368dd7 to head 37cedc5 shows two changes. First, isExternalServer selects manual-only maintenance and suppresses the local binary path for nonblank Server URLs. Second, the behind_latest advisory message is replaced for external servers. Both changes address the Update now behavior described in the issue. The summary also reports changes in driver.test.ts covering loopback and remote URLs, the empty-URL positive control, advisory persistence, and advisory clearing. These tests support the driver change. The mobile fallback in SettingsEnvironmentDetailRouteScreen.tsx displays the advisory message that the driver now supplies. The documentation in docs/user/providers-opencode.md describes the same ownership and restart behavior. The PR process statements do not change code scope. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#22869] Met at head 37cedc5. driver.ts sets isExternalServer when serverUrl.trim() is nonempty. For external servers, maintenance resolves with binaryPath: null, so no local opencode upgrade action is offered. A behind_latest advisory for external servers uses a message that tells the user to update and restart the configured server. The issue requires that automatic termination not occur. The PR adds no automatic restart, so this requirement is met. The issue also requires that the runtime version be rechecked after a safe restart. The advisory clears when the server reports the new version, as covered by driver.test.ts. The issue also requires that a local CLI not be assumed to own a remote server. The loopback and remote cases both use manual-only maintenance, so this requirement is met.

[#22869] Not met: (1) The issue requires that the installed CLI version be verified separately from the running server version. The PR description and objectives state that no local CLI probe is added. The diff contains no installed-CLI version check. (2) The issue requires the message 'CLI updated; restart the configured server to apply' when the installed CLI is current and the configured server is stale. The diff does not produce this message. The published advisory text reports only that the server version is out of date and tells the user to update the server through its owning app or tool. It does not report CLI status. The issue is open and directly linked. No maintainer decision in the provided context replaces these requirements. The PR describes its manual-only design as an alternative to these requirements.

Resolution

Implement the two unmet requirements. (a) Add a separate installed-CLI version check for the configured or local binary and show the installed-CLI version and the running-server version as separate values. (b) When the installed CLI is current and the configured server is behind latest, show a message that states the CLI was updated and that the configured server must be restarted. Add driver tests for both states. Alternatively, record a maintainer decision on #22869 that the manual-only design replaces requirements (a) and (b). After that decision is recorded, reassess this assessment.

merged current main without rebasing, preserving configured-server ownership and main's home-relative binary support. resolved the driver/test conflicts. fixed the new review finding by keeping configured npm registry lookup with a null binary path and the provider-instance environment. configured servers still cannot update the local cli. the existing mobile advisory fix is preserved; both review threads are resolved.

verification at 37cedc57c76e4334dd78fd684dd4652bf2cab621:

  • blacksmith: all 27 driver/version-probe tests passed. vp run check:changed 3368dd70f20cb192b68895494a4a73455524fb76 passed format, lint, both knip passes, 10 affected package typechecks, adjacent tests and react compiler checks.
  • extended the existing loopback/remote regressions: before the registry fix they incorrectly used public version 9.9.9; afterward they use configured version 2.1.3, preserve manual guidance across refreshes, and clear the warning when the server catches up. local managed updates and home-relative binary discovery pass.
  • real opencode 2.0.32 server through the actual web client: 38 models load; main offers the local cli upgrade; this head shows manual server guidance with no update-now or update-all action. repeated refresh preserves the guidance and the same server process.
  • two independent source reviews approved the final head. final-head ci is still running.

unverified: native mobile rendering, packaged desktop, windows/macOS, relay/tunnel, paid opencode model turns, and completing an actual upgrade. no server upgrade or restart is performed by this change. scope remains four files, 163 additions and 11 deletions.

Verified in a real dev environment

the configured-server change passes at e7ea6f5d2b45ccd64b3d4520f51459fb09aee420. no source changes or pushes were needed.

  • reproduced on fresh github/main (9ebca5f71c) in a separate worktree, then installed and ran the exact pr head. one dev server at a time; playwright from the repo with /usr/bin/google-chrome; app-created projects and threads, no mocks or seeded data.
  • in settings → providers, configured a real opencode 2.0.32 server at http://127.0.0.1:4096 and a separate current 2.2.0 local binary. main offered the unrelated local opencode upgrade. the pr showed the manual server update/restart guidance and no update-now action. the configured server was also excluded from the shared update shortcut.
  • repeated provider refreshes kept the warning and the original server process (pid 20588). after manually restarting the configured server with the genuine 2.2.0 binary, refresh showed 2.2.0 and cleared its warning. its 37-model catalog still loaded.
  • a second, t3-managed opencode instance with an empty server url retained its own update action, including while the configured instance needed a manual update. see the limitation below about completing that update.
  • real codex gpt-6.1-sol prompts completed in the web client on main and on the pr. the pr response was pr provider path works.
  • blacksmith: all 11 existing opencode driver tests passed. vp run check:changed 1316d48b0c68151afd8b47eb0c11a114cf0b4daa passed format, lint, both knip passes, all five affected package typechecks, and the 11 tests. the worker needed the pr's base history fetched first. the head's 27 reported ci checks were green.

short runtime transcript:

separate local CLI: opencode v2.2.0
configured server GET /api/info: HTTP 200, version 2.0.32, pid 20588
main update popup: /home/user/.opencode/bin/opencode upgrade
pr update popup: update the configured OpenCode server with its owning app/tool
repeated refresh: warning remains; same server pid 20588
manual server restart, GET /api/info: HTTP 200, version 2.2.0, pid 63982
client refresh: OpenCode v2.2.0, 37 models, configured-server warning gone

main offers the unrelated local CLI upgrade

provider refresh preserves the manual server warning

manual server upgrade clears the warning after refresh

Not verified

  • github renders the external mp4 as an image rather than an inline player. its uploaded original played and sought correctly in chrome; the four png captures render correctly on the github comment.
  • completion of the neighboring local CLI update: the isolated npm-global update stalled for over 10 minutes, the client reported SocketReadError, and npm logged SIGTERM before completion. the updating indicator persisted until the dev server restart. this is a finding, not a passing update check. an earlier copied-binary native update probe also failed because opencode could not detect its installation method. neither result establishes a regression from this diff; the updater implementation is unchanged. i left that separate path untouched.
  • native ios/android rendering of the mobile advisory change, packaged desktop, windows/macOS, a physically remote opencode server, relay/tunnel connections, and paid opencode model turns. the provider maintenance/version/catalog path used a real opencode server; paid model turns used codex as requested.

screenshots and the trimmed recording were inspected; uploaded video playback and seeking worked.

Give the npm fixture a Windows executable extension.

On Windows, command resolution does not consider the extensionless npm fixture. The lookup falls back to the seeded 9.9.9 version, so the advisory assertions fail. Use a platform-appropriate fixture name and adjust the mock command assertion as needed. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Include the npm registry in the configured version cache key.

The configured npm lookup can use an instance-specific environment. Its cache key does not. When an instance has no update command and no install path, the key is npm-registry\0<package>. Two instances with different npm registry settings can therefore share one cached latest version until the entry expires.

This behavior predates this change. The external-server branch now reaches the same key, but the key logic itself is unchanged. Set latestVersionCacheKey for each configured instance, or include the instance's registry setting in the installer key. The option already exists in packages/provider-core/src/server/maintenance.ts and is honored at packages/provider-core/src/server/maintenanceResolver.ts:984. No provider currently sets it.
