Problem

Every project started from a name (New project in the command palette, Add Project on mobile, or t3_project_create) gets a README that ends with "Created in T3 Code.". There is no way to leave that line out, so anyone who doesn't want it has to delete it from each new repository by hand.

Change

  • Contracts: new environment setting newProjectReadmeCredit, a boolean that defaults to true, plus its patch field. Configs saved before this change decode to true, so nothing changes for existing users.
  • Server: ManagedProjectFolders.scaffoldRepository reads the setting and omits the credit line when it is off. Every creation path already goes through createNamedProject, so the WS RPC, MCP and client transports are unchanged. If settings can't be read, the credit stays on and project creation is never blocked.
  • Web: a switch under Settings → General → Projects & threads, with a settings-search entry and a reset entry in restore defaults.
  • Mobile: a matching switch in a new "New projects" section of the Source control settings page. When a single project is selected, it is disabled with the same "Environment-wide setting" note as other environment-only rows.
  • Docs: one sentence in docs/user/source-control.md saying where to turn it off.

The setting is environment-only, not project-overridable, because the project doesn't exist yet when its README is written.

Scope and approval

This is a focused configuration option for an established capability (CONTRIBUTING, "focused configuration").

  • What already exists: named projects are scaffolded with a README, an icon and a first commit.
  • What the option controls: only whether that README includes the one T3 Code credit line.
  • Why it stays inside that capability: the icon, title, commit, folder naming and GitHub publishing are unchanged, and existing projects are never edited.
  • Default: unchanged (credit on).

Verification

Focused checks, all passing:

  • vp test run packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.test.ts: 3 files, 250 tests.
    • New: the setting decodes to true by default and accepts false patches.
    • New: with the setting off, the README is exactly the icon and title.
    • Changed: the existing named-project test now also asserts the credit is present by default.
  • vp test run --project browser src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.restore.browser.test.tsx in apps/web: 5/5. A new case checks that restore defaults lists and resets this setting; the table gained a "changed value" column because this key defaults to true.
  • vp run --filter <pkg> typecheck for @t3tools/contracts, t3, @t3tools/web and @t3tools/mobile: all pass.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on every changed file: clean.

End to end, I ran vp run dev with an isolated --home-dir and drove the web app with headless Chromium:

  1. The switch is on by default. I created "Credit On Check" from the command palette, and its README ends with the credit line.
  2. I turned the switch off; it stayed off after a reload, and settings.json contains "newProjectReadmeCredit": false.
  3. I created "Credit Off Check", and its README is just the icon and # Credit Off Check.

Both projects got their initial commit, and the working tree was clean.

Default (on) Turned off
Credit T3 Code in new project READMEs, on Credit T3 Code in new project READMEs, off, with reset button

Not checked: the mobile row on a device or simulator (only typechecked), and the desktop (Electron) shell.

Made with Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

Projects started from a name get a README that always ends with
"Created in [T3 Code](https://t3.codes).". Add an environment setting,
newProjectReadmeCredit (default on), that the README scaffold reads, with
switches in web and mobile settings.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds a new environment-wide setting across the contracts, server, web, and mobile surfaces that changes the contents of newly generated project READMEs. The default preserves current output, but the new defaulted product setting and cross-surface runtime behavior warrant human review.

  • Code review disabled. Approvability was decided on eligibility alone.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a server-wide setting to control whether named-project READMEs include a “Created in T3 Code” line. The setting appears in web and mobile controls. Project scaffolding reads the setting and includes the credit by default.

Changes: New-project README credit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Setting contract and controls
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.restore.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsLayout.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsServerControlsRouteScreen.tsx
Adds newProjectReadmeCredit as a boolean setting that defaults to true. Web and mobile settings expose the option. Web settings include search and default restoration. Environment-wide rows do not render reset actions.
Named-project README generation
apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.ts, apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts, docs/user/source-control.md
Project scaffolding reads the setting before writing a named-project README. It omits the credit when disabled and defaults to including it if reading settings fails. Tests cover enabled and disabled output. Documentation describes the setting.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ad7c3

The README-credit setting can still be restored to its default in All projects, and its project-scope reset is hidden where the setting cannot be changed. No concrete merge-blocking issue remains.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ad7c3

The setting controls only a fixed attribution line in newly generated READMEs. Existing configurations retain the previous behavior, and the reviewed changes do not expand permissions or project-creation authority.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new preference's effective scope is README attribution for future named projects in the configured environment. The inspected consumer does not rewrite existing repositories or alter project identity, command execution, or filesystem destination selection.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced security attack path was identified in the inspected preference-to-generation flow: the selectable value is boolean and gates fixed Markdown text rather than executable input or a privileged destination.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The routed public entrypoint is an exported React component, not a new network endpoint. SettingsRow now hides resets for environment-only rows in project or checkout scope, while the existing inert-control behavior remains. The defaultProjectScripts caller remains project-scoped and retains its override-reset callback.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new read remains inside the existing scaffold preparation boundary. Preparation failure or interruption invokes folder cleanup; registration errors retain the existing conflict and ownership checks before deletion. Folder claiming, registration, and cleanup logic are unchanged from the PR base.
