fix(web): preserve Shift+Enter on iPad hardware keyboards - #21814
Shift+Enter submits a prompt instead of inserting a newline in the iPad Safari web composer with an external keyboard. This contradicts the documented iPad shortcuts. Related to #14869.
The reporter reproduced this on iPadOS 27.0.1 with a Logitech keyboard and T3 Code 0.1.0, using app.t3.codes through T3 Connect and directly in Safari. The send shortcut was set to Enter. Disabling rich text did not help.
ProseMirror view 1.42.3 defers iOS Enter handling and later synthesizes an unmodified Enter event. Its modifier check excludes Control, Alt, and Meta but not Shift, so the composer receives an ordinary Enter and submits.
Change
Add Shift to the modifiers that bypass ProseMirror's delayed iOS Enter workaround, using the repository's existing pnpm patch mechanism. Shift+Enter reaches the normal key handler with its original modifiers. Unmodified Enter retains the virtual-keyboard workaround, and the existing editable and composition guards remain in place.
Patch the source and both ESM/CommonJS exports, register the patch, and update its lockfile reference. The patch is keyed to ^1.42.3, covering the locked 1.42.3 and the 1.42.6 fresh resolution verified below. If a later release changes those lines, pnpm fails the install instead of silently skipping the fix. No dependency versions change and no composer-specific event tracking is added.
Add eight browser regression cases for plain/rich text, native keyboard input, a subsequent key arriving before the former fallback, ordinary Enter submission, read-only state, and active/recent composition.
Scope and approval
This is submitted under the small, focused, obvious-bug exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. It restores an established, documented shortcut without changing product defaults or adding a workflow. The condition changes only iOS Enter events carrying Shift. The dependency patch also covers other ProseMirror editors using this package; non-iOS behavior is unchanged.
On the issue, a maintainer named the same code path as the remaining candidate: ProseMirror's iOS Enter handling calls the editor key handler with a synthetic Enter that has no modifiers. That is a code finding, not maintainer approval of this implementation. Physical iPad verification remains outstanding, so this PR does not automatically close the issue.
#23449 targets the same bug. It routes iOS Shift+Enter into the composer's own handler before ProseMirror substitutes the event. This PR fixes the modifier check in ProseMirror itself, so the composer code does not change.
Verification
Observed behavior
A standalone browser fixture rendered the actual T3 composer and used the actual submission-intent resolver with sendShortcut set to Enter. Chromium's navigator vendor/touch properties were set before imports to exercise ProseMirror's real iPad path. This is browser-path emulation, not physical iPad testing.
Before the patch, a DOM Shift+Enter event with shiftKey=true resulted in one submission and unchanged text after the 200 ms fallback.
After the patch, the same event produced zero submissions and exactly one newline in both editor modes.
Native browser keyboard Shift+Enter also produced exactly one newline. A following plain Enter submitted once.
Read-only, active composition, and immediate post-composition checks left the document unchanged with zero submissions. An intervening arrow key did not turn Shift+Enter into a submission.
Checks
On 004b0be, rebased onto upstream main at 87ea18c:
vp run check:changed passed: unused patches, format, lint, knip, typecheck of 34 packages, and the changed browser test file. The unused-patch check confirms the patch still applies to the locked prosemirror-view 1.42.3.
vp test run --project browser src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.ipad.browser.test.tsx in apps/web: 8 tests passed.
vp test run --project unit src/composer-logic.test.ts in apps/web: 61 tests passed.
Frozen pnpm install passed and applied the patch, which validates the patch hash and lockfile.
Checked before this rebase, with no dependency change since:
git apply --check of the patch against prosemirror-view 1.42.6 passed with line offsets only.
Reproduced the release smoke lockfile step (workspace manifests and patches copied to a temp dir, lockfile deleted, pnpm install --lockfile-only): it resolved 1.42.6 and recorded the patch hash with no unused-patch error.
Not checked: physical iPadOS Safari with hardware and software keyboards.
Evidence
Full T3 web app (vp run dev with a seeded database), Chromium at 1180x820 with the values iPadOS Safari reports: navigator.vendor "Apple Computer, Inc.", platform "MacIntel", a Safari user agent, and maxTouchPoints 5. That enables ProseMirror's real iOS path. Each run types "first line", presses Shift+Enter through Playwright's keyboard, waits 600 ms (past the 200 ms fallback), then types "second line". Agent CLIs were left off the server's PATH so a submitted prompt could not start a real turn; the provider error in the before shot comes from that.
Before (base commit 34c5a6d4, unpatched prosemirror-view 1.42.3): Shift+Enter sends "first line" as a prompt, and "second line" starts a new draft.
After (this branch): Shift+Enter inserts a newline and nothing is sent.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped iPad keyboard bug fix: Shift+Enter bypasses only ProseMirror’s delayed unmodified-Enter fallback, while ordinary Enter and non-iOS behavior remain unchanged. The remaining changes register the pinned dependency patch and add focused browser regression coverage.
